do you keep a lampwick about the house?

Is that a lampwick? And even if it's not, what is the function of a lampwick? This probably sounds silly but I had in mind some sort of Dickensian lighting apparatus.

Lampwick is to oil lamp as wick is to candle - the stringy bit that you light. Oil lamps usually have a wee wheel you can twiddle to move the wick up and down, to alter the size (and brightness) of the flame and compensate for the wick burning away.

They usually last for more than two days and less than four, hence the term three day wick-end.
