Today I bought a microphone for my computer

I've been playing with it instead of actually working, recording myself reading poetry. It's great fun. I feel like a radio presenter.

How do I create a link to post sound files on a mesage board? I am not technically-minded (it took me a good ten minutes just to work out where to plug the microphone in) - is it like when you post pictures, in that you have to put sound files on some public site first or something?

Sometimes I feel so stupid.

Yes, you'd have to upload it somewhere and then link it using anchor tags, like you would with a link to an URL.

If you have some web space, FTP the sound file up from your hard drive (I recommend WS_FTP LE, which you can get here for free), and then post the link (it'll be the server name followed by whatever directory you've uploaded the file to, followed by the file extension -- ".wav" or whatever).

the server name

...the domain name, rather.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 10 January 2003 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh well, that's scuppered then. I don't have any web space - but thanks for the advice anyway!

I reckon there are people here willing to host ILXers reading poetry. What were you reading? Was it Ezra Pound, or pornographic? Those are good bets for getting hosts, I think.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Pornographic?? I blush in your general direction, young man!

Actually, I was reading "The Conundrum of the Workshops" by Kipling, followed by some Roald Dahl poetry, but I think I've erased it now. :(

C J (C J), Friday, 10 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't mean me, CJ - I have nowhere to host anything anyway, even if my interests ran in such directions. Anyway, it's 'old man', surely.

Cheap ass international phone calls ahoy! Get hold of 'paltalk' - free on the web - and you can have a conversation, CB-style, with anyone in another country, via the power of the web, for free!

Al Ewing (Al Ewing), Saturday, 11 January 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

we need a 'what does your voice sound like' thread where ILXers can post clips of their voice recordings

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 11 January 2003 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

There was one, along the lines of "Fuck it, what do you all sound like?"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 11 January 2003 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, CJ - what kind of microphone did you buy? I've been meaning to buy a decent one so's I can actually USE my fancy Audigy soundcard to record the rocking roll of my creation.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 11 January 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Just sign up with Tripod or some other free web hosting site.

Leee, Saturday, 11 January 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

David - it's just an el-cheapo £9.99 Labtec microphone, but it works fine.

Thanks for all the advice - free international phone conversations - yay! Must look into that. And I'll check out finding some free web space on Tripod.

Testing, testing, one two three.........!

Those cheapo mics have a really charming quality to them, especially for spoken word. If you want a bit more from your mic then you can usually pick up an half decent Shure or AKG for about thirty quid or so this time of year.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 11 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

If you are going to distribute the soundfiles make sure to use an audio compression format like MP3 or Ogg Vorbis.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Saturday, 11 January 2003 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

three years pass...
Oddly enough, I've only finally just done this. Look out world, etc.

That said, I have two questions for you, the gentle reader -- preferably if you are a Mac person like me:

1. Is there any simple, stupid way to tell GarageBand that I just want to record voice through microphone and nothing else?

2. Am I right to be concerned that even though I'm running on a perfectly fine Mac Mini with a duo processor GarageBand, unlike just about any other program I use, locks into a spinning ball of death mode pretty much constantly?

The corollary to both these questions being "Can I tell GarageBand to pack sand for a simpler program, please?"

I used to record my speech on my pc, then reverse it so i could practice talking backwards. Then i reversed my backwards talk to see how well i'd done. I know this doesn't answer your question, and i'm sorry about that.

I love you anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Did you try Sound Studio?

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

*checks* Looks pretty nice, like the descriptions of it. You use it yourself?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

A little, but I tend to use Ableton Live for the bells and whistles. If you're just recording your voice, you might want to use that and it may not give your system the headache that GarageBand seems to. I've never used GarageBand though, so I'm no expert.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I was just running too much stuff, I don't know. Hmm.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

ned, i've been using sound studio for years to record vinyl ... it's simple and pretty much faultless (although i'd still recommend not running anything else remotely demanding while you're making any kind of HD recording!)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 8 October 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

It could simply be as you say, that I was running too much while trying to run GarageBand and thus kerfluffle. I'll try again this afternoon just as is, but I do like Sound Studio the more I hear and read about it and will definitely keep it in mind. Thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 October 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, figured out what I need from GarageBand -- namely, forget its internal podcast setup, utterly pointless. A straight vocal recording is doable and doesn't lock up. But now the great mystery -- how in the world do I save a file straight to mp3 rather than AAC?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 October 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

The default is AAC? Not WAV?

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Sunday, 8 October 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

This is as much as I can find in the help documentation:

---

You can send a song to iTunes and play it in iTunes, add it to playlists, download it to an iPod, or burn it to a CD. Songs are sent to iTunes in AIFF format. You can convert the exported file to another format, such as AAC or MP3, from within iTunes.

To export a song to an iTunes playlist:

Choose Share > Send Song to iTunes.

The entire song, from the beginning to the end of the last region, is exported. If the cycle region is turned on when you export the song, the part of the timeline from the start to the end of the cycle region is exported.

If a project has a podcast track, the command Send Podcast to iTunes appears in the Share menu. If the project has a video track, the command Send Movie to iTunes appears in the Share menu. Choosing either of these commands exports the entire project, regardless of whether the cycle region is turned on or off.

You can also export a song to disk by choosing Share > Export Song to Disk. The song is exported in AAC format.

---

Which is kinda obnoxious, that last part. You'd figure they'd give you a choice for exporting to the disk.
