Spring is passing me by and I hardly have any sailor clothes. Tried on a Paul Frank navy blue sailor smock today but the sleeves were weird.

we'll have seen the whole film frame by frame by the end of this thread.

I still don't understand the attraction of wearing uniforms.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I once saw Ian Svenonius at a Halloween party, dressed as a sailor (it probably was all authentic military surplus stuff).

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 26 April 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I need a mao suit.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 26 April 2003 17:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Paul Frank is rockin' the nautical theme!

rosemary@mary's (Mary), Saturday, 26 April 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I was wise to hold out on those PF wristbands cz R. found me a white muscle tee with a navy anchor on it.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 27 April 2003 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't say that I noticed you were hugely muscly when you came over, Mary. Perhaps I was not paying sufficient attention.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Aha Martin, I was trying to avoid the tank top/vest US/UK divide.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh...are sailor suits hep now for men, too? 'Cause I'm sorely tempted to rock some sailor threads right about now.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

*gulp*

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Is that like a yes or a no? :)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Daddino, I'm sorry my Roman Holiday picture is a broken link now. :( I say yes, but in moderation. One element at a time.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a deeply unfair rule to people with peg-legs, Felicity.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I can safely swing on the side of YES YES YES YES YES.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I have to schedule a trip to Weiss & Mahoney before the next FAP, then.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-three years ago)

*eyes widen*

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a deeply unfair rule to people with peg-legs, Felicity.

Fashion is a cruel and fickle mistress.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Aha Martin, I was trying to avoid the tank top/vest US/UK divide.

And what is that? Far as I know in the UK, a vest is t-shirt material or the like with about inch-wide strips over the shoulders; a muscle-shirt is a sleeveless tee, and a tank top may be the same shape as the vest, but it is knitted. Is some of this different in the States?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

What is this movie?!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

US tank top = mostly cotton material summer type shirt.
US vest = sweater material, could be cotton or wool, worn over a long-sleeved shirt, the thing I like to wear a lot.

I look forward to Daddino's amalgation of the sailor-grunge look.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:08 (twenty-three years ago)

This is turning into a counterpart of the faggots thread...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Battle Royale

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

That sounds like the freakiest movie ever, now I have to see it. If I knew about it two days ago I would've worked it into my essay, seriously. As if I've even written the thng.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I am planning to make it my next DVD purchase maybe we can have an Ilxor screening if only I don't put in the disc and it says sorry cannot play turn back you proxy fule.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Where do you score yr imports Mary? Only answer that if it's someplace online that ships domestically.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 28 April 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The dude in the middle-bottom row of Phil's picture totally looks like mini-me.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 28 April 2003 01:45 (twenty-three years ago)

What imports? If you mean the Battle Royale DVD I saw it the other day at Kim's, but maybe it's also available at Amazon.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 April 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

The dude in the middle-bottom row of Phil's picture totally looks like mini-me.

Haha! He does! And the guy second row from bottom, far right - looks liek nosferatu!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 28 April 2003 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just imagining watching Battle Royale with you lot in outfits like theirs. I'd be terrified, I think. (It's a wonderful film.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 28 April 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I would totally wear that Alexander McQueen getup minus the high heels and makeup, that is, the stuff that makes it fashionable.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not at amazon, but I did find a lot of good stuff at www.diabolikdvd.com. Schwee. Now I just need to scrounge some cash.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 28 April 2003 22:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried on an Alexander McQueen dress at Tokio 7. Mary said it fit "strangely."

Whoa, Mike Remlinger called and wants his socks back!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh that was AM? Too bad they didn't have that schoolgirl pirate look brought to us by the lovely phil-two.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:25 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, I just put it on to know how AWESOME life must be.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I actually heard ARE weapons. Wasn't bad: had a Jon Lydon vibe going.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

My mother wore these kinds of sailor dresses as her school uniform in Japanese-occupied Korea.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, I guess this thread just took a more serious turn.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:16 (twenty-three years ago)

My mother wore these kinds of sailor dresses as her school uniform in Japanese-occupied Korea.

Hey! My mother grew up in Japanese-occupied Korea too... Maybe they know each other.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I tried on an Alexander McQueen dress at Tokio 7. Mary said it fit "strangely."

I'm not sure that Alexander McQueen clothing is meant to be worn though... Anyhow, did his store on 14th street open yet?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you mother go to Ihwa?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil, you have reduced me to tears of laughter. This is the best variation of "Oh, you're from [large geographical region with a lot of people]? Do you know [random person you don't know]?" I've seen in a long time.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The Korean girls are still wearing the sailor outfits, but they don't look half as slutty as the Japanese girls.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 02:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Did you mother go to Ihwa?

Fuck me! She DID go to Ihwa Women's University! Ask her if she knows a Kyos1k Oh... Wait, I guess her name was Kyos1k Yu back then. 1 = i... I don't want her googling her name and finding ILX.

See Dan? They MIGHT know wach other afterall!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 04:33 (twenty-three years ago)

wach = each

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Phil you are having us on.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

No, really!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 05:08 (twenty-three years ago)

It's really common for Korean women of the generation that moved to the US after WWII to have gone to Ihwa. My mom went for high school and college.

The idea of my mother googling anything makes me giggle.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

my mom is very high-tech. i think its funny that our mothers might have been best friends when they were 18.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 1 May 2003 03:35 (twenty-three years ago)

My mother is still friends with lots of people from Iwha. Just last month she met someone in Chicago it turns out was in her Ihwa class. My mother's very best friend, Hee-gyung, was president of Ihwa University until recently. I will be sure to ask my mother next time I talk to her. In any event, I'm sure they would be inclined to like each other.

Ihwa is everywhere. I'm not sure people outside of Korea really realize how tight that old girls network is. It must be the sailor uniforms.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, my mom lives in Chicago too... ARE YOU MY SISTER? JANE? IS THAT YOU?

My mom is around 62 years old though...

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 2 May 2003 01:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 24 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-three years ago)

how was it?

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

It's one of the greatest sailor suit movies ever made. See also: 'Raggedy Man' w/ Sissy Spacek.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

oh mary, im back in town if you want to go to search&destroy and try on those japanese schoolboy/girl outfits!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

it was really good, but the sailor uniform was used in a strip tease -- it wasn't kept on for long enough . . . anna karina had a lot of other nice outfits though . . . red tights . . .great phil -- let's do it!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:20 (twenty-three years ago)

four months pass...
