does '16 jackies' count as a painting ?
that then if so and not if not.

piscesboy, Thursday, 16 January 2003 01:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark, that Maltese fresco looks like a hybrid man-mouse touching himself and fantasizing about a duck.

I cannot agree that the painting is the greatest painting ever. However, I will post a painting that I think is as good:

(Anthony: This is an excellent idea for a throw-down, BTW!)

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 16 January 2003 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Felicity's choice because of where the foot in the lower left hand corner eventually ended up.

"Austrian art historian Eduard Mahlknecht… is not even certain the creature is a mouse at all. 'It could just as well be a painting of the weasel legend,' he said. According to legend, the weasel is fertilised through its mouth and gave birth through its ears…"

This painting is by David Barnes, although I was tempted to put a painting in from the mad period of Giorgio di Chirico where he thought he was a cavalier

I always hated Fragonard. Though it does take on new meaning when you think that (and I may have my dates wrong) women were very unlikely to wear anything like panties under their skirts at that time. So it looks nasty and has the depth of an old seaside postcard. (Sorry, Erik, no offence intended - your pic-postings have given me great joy of late.)

No 15th C Japanese Zen paintings so far, I note...

It's a drawing not a painting, but this Lysistrata by Aubrey Beardsley never ceases to amaze me:

THROUGH ITS EARS!!!

In medieval theology, among many theories about the nature of Jesus' birth to a virgin mother, it was suggested that the Angel Gabriel spunked into Mary's ear.

Gabriel was a true playa!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 00:10 (twenty-three years ago)

this Lysistrata by Aubrey Beardsley

Anything from his Lysistrata is mind-boggling. There's your Victorian-repression-leads-to-this-kind-of-thing example.

I suppose I could also talk about the Beardsley worship in the Smashing Pumpkins' "Stand Inside Your Love" video...
