Following on from Nick;s "Things that really ought to have disappeared by now," how about...

Things that you haven't seen for ages that you miss and would like to see return to pop-cultural prominence?

Household products, food, drink, old TV shows, anything?

Let's hear it for Quatro!

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 16 January 2003 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Metal Mickey!

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 16 January 2003 10:58 (twenty-three years ago)

The return of rigid Reithian cultural standards to British broadcasting in order to exterminate forever the uncalled-for elevation of trash to illusory memory in "I Love The Top 10 Of Two Seconds Ago."

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I cannot forgive this thread's inception.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

dastoor's love of fun.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, you don't have to contribute to the thread if you don't want to, Nick.

Whilst I do feel that the nostalgia boom (I Love The Seventies, Top Ten Gardening Programmes and online resources such as TV Cream) is very much a spent force indeed, I can appreciate why it's been in vogue. Having a light-hearted look back is in many ways rather more fun than looking forward.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

We need a ten-year moratorium on "fun."

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Incas

Lara, Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Theatre on the TV.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Play For Today should definitely come back, yes.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 16 January 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

play for tomorrow!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Play For Tomorrow:

You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman by Nick Hornby

Starring John Thomson as Dick Corby, a frustrated stinking rich music loving football playing mortgage consultant who is dying of testicular cancer.

Also starring Hermione Norris as Nicola Nicks, his hilariously long-suffering partner who is nagging him for a child.

Featuring Arlan O'Hanlon as Liam Donal Ronan, the irrepressible, fun-loving street sweeper full of dark Celtic mystery whom Nicola Nicks periodically fucks ("Me name's Oirish...wouldn't it oi be tellin' you, for the love of Gay Byrne, that it's Oirish that oi am, to be sure, Mustang Sally now baby ect." "Oh Liam Donal Ronan, you are so Celticly wise." *shag* ten seconds later "where's my new Massive Attack CD?").

Soundtrack: Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Doves, Solomon Burke, Chas & Dave, Arthur Doyle Electro-Acoustic Ensemble.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 16 January 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Low-Budget. British. Horror.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Wig Wam chocolate bars.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben and Jerry's Cool Brittania ice cream. It still makes me mad to think they took it away for lesser flavors.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Lynskey. Where are today's Pete Walkers and Norman J. Warrens? Darklands and Dog Soldiers don't really cut it for me, I'm afraid.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha ha Nicole is an Anglophile who can't spell Britannia.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 16 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

What was that flavor anyway? I never saw a pint so I don't recall what was in it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

It had shortbread cookies in it! Plus strawberries...mmm, strawberries.

N. is still miffed over the "Axe effect" comment, but I was forced to make the comparison because it is so true.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

It had shortbread cookies in it! Plus strawberries...mmm, strawberries.

Wimbledon meets Scotland. Sorta. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

the beat!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Chambourcy chocolate mousse - "don't tell the children."

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't see any 'Axe effect' comment but my enormous brain has worked out that 'Axe' must be what Fabergé call minging body spray Lynx in the USA.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

France also.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Fox's 'Some Like Em Hot' Apple & Toffee cookies

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 16 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, no.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:48 (twenty-three years ago)

zebedee, Thursday, 16 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Super heroes using Hostess fruit pies/twinkies to fight evil

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Tha Vanden Plas 1300

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 16 January 2003 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Di, I loved Sapphire And Steel too but why not let some of the other elements - Copper, Jet, Nickel have a go?

"Transuranics may not be used where there is life."

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Di,

Sapphire & Steel is on in NZ at the moment! I saw it the other day, but helpfully cannot remember when & where. I don't think it has aged well. Check your local TV guides for details...

Bill E (bill_e), Friday, 17 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

See for yourself. Cheesiest commercial ever.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Got nothing but a page of blank image frames. It is a mystery to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Miami Vice.

daria g, Friday, 17 January 2003 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Got nothing but a page of blank image frames. It is a mystery to me.

It worked for me. Not sure what is up with your computer, but then I'm no expert anyway.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:28 (twenty-three years ago)

hah i was gonna say 'marc bolan' too but di beat me to the punch!

geeta (geeta), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc Bolans should be brought back in huge hordes. They can roam the land freely and at will.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Attack of the bolan clones!

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

SOUNDS GREAT TO ME!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 03:11 (twenty-three years ago)

care bears

sand.y, Friday, 17 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and also my little pony

sand.y, Friday, 17 January 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Sandy - an acquaintance recently bought a Care Bear so they're still around even though their ubiquity might have waned. I think they "really ought to have disappeared by now."

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 09:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't know about the UK, but there has been a huge Care Bear revival in the States and I'm seeing their merchandise everywhere. They're one of those things that really should never have been brought back, the happy little bastards.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing something along the likes of Reservoir Care Bears... how's that for high concept?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:43 (twenty-three years ago)

the happy little bastards

Not every Sanrio character is angst-ridden, I should note.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:59 (twenty-three years ago)

But they aren't quite so in-your-face with the happiness, though! Most of the characters are basically expressionless, they're not trying to impose cheerfulness on you the way the Care Bears do.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Grumpy Bear isn't trying to impose cheerfulness on anyone. He was a bad-ass.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Next thing you know I'll find out there was a Herpes Bear and all kinds of unpleasant ones I overlooked because I hated their pastel asses.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Imagine being the marketing guy tasked with selling Herpes Bear to little kids.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

"Kids, you'll love Herpes Bear so much it will give you sores!"

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:02 (twenty-three years ago)

how can you not like care bears? they're so cuddly and cute!

i actually saw some care bear cuddly toys today! they were some special limited edition kind. i guess the RESURGENCE IS HERE! unfortuantely, my favourite bear was not in stock.

sand.y, Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Marc Bolans should be brought back in huge hordes. They can roam the land freely and at will.

i want to reply to this but my brain is exploding from sensory overload.

bill e: s&s replaces the yachting when the weather is poor, and tragically, my tele is busted.

oh care bears, i had one that my grandma made for me, i threw it away last year after my pet slugs attacked it. love-a-lot bear is DA BOMB.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 18 January 2003 08:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"Kids, you'll love Herpes Bear so much it will give you sores!"

Let's hope there were no Care Bears Lickable Candies.

i want to reply to this but my brain is exploding from sensory overload.

I will make sure Di has a Marc horde of her very own.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 January 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

ned you DEFINITELY get it.

also i think la femme nikita should be brought back, but without nikita's ugly mulleted boyfriend, and with many sex scenes involving Operations, Madeleine and that cute pouty nerd boy whose name eludes me.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 19 January 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

they don't have cherry coke in NZ?!!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

That is so sad, I sometimes ponder how empty life would be without Diet Cherry Coke.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:00 (twenty-three years ago)

not anymore. only elisabeth and i liked it.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, life wouldn't really be empty without cherry coke but I would probably end up drinking faygo...and that could lead to ICP fandom.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

is cherry coke like dr. pepper?

minna (minna), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

They're still making the LP-12... all is well.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

that unique dr pepper taste comes from prune extract!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 05:16 (twenty-three years ago)

crikey!

minna (minna), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

What about rootbeer?McDonalds used to sell loads of it,then all of a sudden it was just taken from us like Terry Waite.Except ol' Tel came back.Rootbeer didn't.BUT....If you too enjoyed the taste of fizzy antiseptic, have a nosey at the 2-litre soft drink bottles in Sainsburys.Hidden on a low shelf somewhere will be...ROOTBEER!!!Hurrah!

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, I want to ban Diet Cherry Coke and see if Nicole turns into a Juggalette.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)
