do you tremble like a leaf? do you clatter your teeth?

http://www.encuentro2000.org/nervous.jpg

do you try to ignore it? what strange idiosyncraties do you have that help you get over it?

erik, Friday, 17 January 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I giggle.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

i tell myself to stop it. in my head. the voices in my head give me reassurance! bahahah! no....i usually say ... 'calm down' or convince myself into apathy....

what physical signs? i'm always the nervous uncomfortable looking guy in the corner of the room making others nervous and uncomfortable.

doom-e, Friday, 17 January 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I go dour.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I act like a twat I fear.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

The twat thing again. I get louder and louder and louder.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to yawn quite a lot. So does my mum. It doesn't make too much sense, unless my body's trying to convince me/us that we're actually realxed and sleepy.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Not go to FAP meet-ups! ;-)

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 17 January 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Rather unpleasantly, I sweat.

David (David), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Whenever I walk past an attractive woman I have this habit of singing to myself.

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:32 (twenty-three years ago)

In social situations I drink too much, too quickly (witness my first FAP almost a year ago).

Other than that I throw up, which is not very good for job interviews.

Anna (Anna), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I throw hand shapes like Jay (and Silent Bob). I did it in a bad area once and my girlfriend told me to stop it before we got shot.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Lose all ability to speak in any kind of a coherent sentence. (And that's different from normal.....how? - Ed.)

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Friday, 17 January 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I just tend to avoid things that make me nervous, which isn't really a great thing to do.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Avoid. Avoid, avoid avoid. Then steel myself and it's not usually too bad.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

My eyes dart around, my hands swim up my face, I have a finger-mustache, I am immaculate.

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

An immaculate finger-moustache? How debonair. But maybe you mean inarticulate.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I get a knotted up stomach, which also often has unpleasant effects on my guts. I also obsessively analyse why I'm nervous, in the hope it'll go away, but it usually doesn't.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

The finger-mustache is more insouciant than inarticulate or immaculate, I think, but we don't question these things.

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot. I also get the shits.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 January 2003 13:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I keep pretending to look at my watch, even though i don't wear one. I also do the yawning thing like Andrew.

jh, Friday, 17 January 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

i say yo after i talk, yo.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I talk too much and look at the ceiling.

Oh, and post to ILE of course :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I have severe panic disorder so I'm nervous 99% of the time. I bite my nails, get stomach cramps. It sucks, mainly because I can't go certain places without having a panic attack. Its limited my lifestyle, I don't travel for fear of flying, I don't drive in unfamiliar territory and good luck ever getting me in an elevator.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i get nervous places, so i don't go places much. i dont get nervous at home. is that a similar thing maybe? i can handle elevators, and flying, travelling and stuff, it's social situations that make me nervous more than strange places. so i avoid them. i've never really seen or asked anyone about it. you think i should?

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

possibly. its a very common disorder. buts its crippling my lifestyle, really is.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh I forgot my compulsive eating followed by shredding of whatever the food was wrapped in.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm perfectly happy though, it doesn't bother me in the slightest, to be honest. it would be crippling my lifestyle if actually enjoyed all that kind of thing, but i don't, so i don't really consider it much of a problem. is this logical? or am i in denail or something?

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually talk too much and make myself look like a prat. My legs shake involuntarily and I take Bach flower remedies quite a lot. Usually I'm okay at job interviews - well the interview goes fine once I'm in there but I never get offered the job.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I find the Cherry Plum Bach flower quite good.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, Cherry Plum is good. I also like Holly, Willow and Water-Violet.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:20 (twenty-three years ago)

you totally lost me now. what's that? shall i get some?

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep, get some Bach remedies in. Down them all in one.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

what are they though? i know i'm not often serious, but i am here. anyone care to explain?

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Bach flower remedies are herbal extracts in a grape alcohol solution that you take in drops to cure nervousness, stress, anxiety etc. A little pick-me-up if you like. There's 38 varieties in all.

Check out www.bachcentre.com for more detailed information.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:34 (twenty-three years ago)

http://www.bachcentre.com/centre/remedies.htm

If you are anti-homeopathy or holistic remedies in general you probably won't want to try these, but they DO work. (Claims that it's because they're in an alcohol solution have some currency though...)

Archel (Archel), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I get a touch edgy, can't quite sit still, those low key type of signs. Therefore I try to avoid being nervous by freezing myself into a block of carbon dioxide daily.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

you sly fucker.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 17 January 2003 15:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm good that way.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't really get nervous about things, but if I get stressed by looming work deadlines etc I like to pop the bubbles in a roll of plastic bubble-wrap.

C J (C J), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Giggle, talk loudly or too much, tap my feet, get stomach cramps, or shake a lot.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:17 (twenty-three years ago)

My eyes dart around, my hands swim up my face, I have a finger-mustache, I am immaculate.

Lovely sentence. I've read it abt 10 times today. Finger-mustache is haunting me.

erik, Friday, 17 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I start chanting to myself, "Minnelli, get it together. Minnelli, get it together. Minnelli, get it together."

I also turn bright red.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

if I get stressed by looming work deadlines etc I like to pop the bubbles in a roll of plastic bubble-wrap.

I do that whenever I have bubble wrap to hand.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I grind my teeth. When I do this during a bad night's sleep I wake up with awful headaches. Other than that, the usual: pace around the room, snack on whatever's around (bad BAD habit that I've resolved to give up), fidget.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I cover my mouth and stare wild-eyed at things.

Ferg (Ferg), Friday, 17 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Mumble or whisper when talking. Snack. Play Pinball.

brg30 (brg30), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

shakey, quiet when sober. when drunk: loud and obnoxious.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 18 January 2003 09:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I get Mr. Bean.

yesterday I had to go the job centre. i get automatically nervous in those places. When I wanted to get my coat off I did something wrong with the top toggle, which made it only tighter. I got so nervous, that I turned it around and around. Only when I was outside I could get the damn thing untied!

And i was only there to make an appointment.

erik, Saturday, 18 January 2003 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I've just noted that quite a few people who've posted on this thread tend to get nervous in social situations (meeting new people). I'm just wondering - is there a difference between being nervous or just being shy, or is it the same sensation every time?

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Talk too loud, forehead sweat, massive blush action occasionally - also, if booze is around, drink faster

Tom Millar (Millar), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i grind my teeth and I am more incoherent than i ususally am.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 18 January 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i become a stuttering fool and feel like throwing up. i also get stomach cramps, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and hot flashes. i try to tell myself to calm the fuck down, but it never works.

sand.y, Saturday, 18 January 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I fall over and twitch uncontrollably.
Then I go home and eat Doritos™ brand snack chips.

john wigglesby wadsworth williamson, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

When I get nervous, I stick my fingers in my armpits and I SMELL THEM, LIKE THAT. It's bad.

Mary-Katherine Gallagher (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

chew at my finger nails, twiddle my fingers (esp rings if I am wearing them), tug at my hair and either talk very fast and fluently Or shut up all together. The latter if I have been drinking.

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I get itchy and end up covered in what looks like nettle stings, I get an upset stomach and get lightheaded, I blush uncontrollably. My body lets me down, my mind can be totally controlled and focused and my body just packs up on me!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

loss of appetite, become heavy footed clod x100

minna (minna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

This has just reminded me that I want some RESCUE REMEMDY. That... was the good shit.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 10:17 (twenty-three years ago)

If anyone's nerves have got so bad that they can't go outside their house without panicking, as happened to me, I found this helped: http://www.claireweekes.com/

es, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

If I get too strung out, something beneath one of my eyes starts twitching.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 23 January 2003 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

your fist?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 23 January 2003 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I refer to everyone as "man" - even girls. I hide behind my pint or a cigarrette. I say things like "Okay then, cool" a lot.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 23 January 2003 01:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I put my hood up or otherwise find some way to sink into my clothing.

Dan I., Thursday, 23 January 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)
