Where apart from the UK do the police not carry firearms as a matter of course?

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't understand... How are the police supposed to shoot people if they don't carry guns?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Ireland.

But they are all armed with rapier sharp wit.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

In the Gaza Strip the police carry M16s supplied by the Israelis after the Oslo accords. This amuses me in a sort of tragic way.

Jane, Friday, 17 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, can you remember the police in India? I thought some of them *did* have guns.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:13 (twenty-three years ago)

They were just pleased to see you.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:14 (twenty-three years ago)

some indian police have guns but not as a matter of course. Similar to here, they have guns at airports and some railway stations, where there is a terrorist threat, as in the northwest of india. But as a rule they don't.

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

That's Northwest India rather than Preston.

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

There *are* no rules in India.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

India is full of rules, people just choose not to take too much notice of them.

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Exactly.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, do the Irish police walk with their backs arched, whistling and twirling their nightsticks? And do they gently nod and smile when they pass someone on the street?

Amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

No they talk but noone understands them in Dublin cos they're all from the country.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

But they always sound friendly, huh?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:25 (twenty-three years ago)

No one needs guns if they've been trained by the Black Arts Military Unarmed Combat Society.

Is this the way forward?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Norway and New Zealand - can anyone confirm?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 17 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The NZ police were unarmed when they were in East Timor. I remember there being ructiuons about this. They were there with the New Zealand Parliamentary delegation serving as UN Observers for the balloting process in 1999.
