Yao Vs. Shaq 2nite!

It'll be a letdown, obviously. Shaq will dominate, pushing Yao all over the court. My only hope is that on two or three plays Yao schools him (a huge block would be fantastic). Anyone watching it?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

If I get home from the bar in time I will. I still can't believe what a cunt Shaq was for that "Tell him choi foi noi noi" comment. Although Bill Walton did point out that it was probably no worse than the Miami Heat, who gave away fortune cookies when the Rockets played them.

I'm more excited about the Pistons-Pacers back-to-back games on Saturday and Monday though. I hope we (Pistons) can pull of a split.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:34 (twenty-three years ago)

HAHA!

Why is it some sports figures can be complete dicks and it's great (Rodman, Shaq) while others can be complete dicks and you just want them to die (Bryant, Starks)?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I know... it has been rightly point out that if Yao were to say, "tell him yessir bossa masta" or something like that then, well, there would be no end to the outcry.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Two shocking things: 1) Shaq's comments and 2) That I agreed with Walton's editorial on ESPN.com. He was right to question what Shaq was saying privately, if those were his public comments.

Dan: To move into football, I would put Terrell Owens in category one, Jeremy Shockey in #2.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I agreed with Walton's editorial on ESPN.com.

I know! I was more sad about that than his comments in the first place.

I would put Terrell Owens in category one, Jeremy Shockey in #2.

I dunno... wouldn't it be the other way around? I mean, the pen thing was kind of funny in the context of why he did it (his agent asked him for an autographed ball). That caused more of an uproar than the fact that Shockey threw ICE which hit a bunch of little kids (although they sure did go the extra nine miles to apologize). I kind of like Shockey though...

Dennis Rodman came to my high school just before he turned himself into a superfreak. All I remember is that he had a pimped out lowrider truck.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It comes down to personal preference, I guess. They are both tremendous players, but I like the fact that up until the infamous Dallas game, TO was a pretty withdrawn guy (controversy wise, anyway). Now he's a Gary Payton-level gabber, but I think he's earned that right. He is the best WR in the NFL (sorry Marvin, sorry Randy), so he can back it up. Shockey, on the other hand, came into the league a trash talker and will always be one. Yes he's good. The best TE in football? No, that title belongs to Tony Gonzalez. Could be be the best TE ever? No, that would belong to Shannon Sharpe (who I detest) or Kellen Winslow (although his son could supplant him) or Ozzie Newsome (my fave). They're both punks, but TO's got a bit more style. Plus the whole gay-baiting thing Shockey did annoyed me. And he's a Giant, and I hate the Giants.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:01 (twenty-three years ago)

a lot of people hated rodman but i alwyas figured they were just jealous that he had a personality and they didn't.

g (graysonlane), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I always liked Rodman because he made the glamorless plays (rebounds, blocks, loose balls (attention Perry!)) glamorous.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It's funny cuz Rodman was actually kind of smart... he realized he was hand's down the best in the league at doing all the dirty hustle plays but didn't get any attention. So he turned himself into DENNIS RODMAN and became a celeb (although he is indeed certifiable).

I'm really happy that Ben Wallace is going to be starting at the All-Star game for the East. He can't score at all (his trips to the free throw line are pretty exciting), but man he's such a presence in the paint. His new nickname from his teammates is "Body."

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Big "Body" Ben too. I dig players like that (unless they are Charles Oakley). I'm guessing you're a Pistons fan. You must be hating the Pacers... In my preseason picks (which I posted on ILE) I predicted a huge season from the Pacers but a bad one from the Pistons. Half-right with that, it seems.

(I also said the Lakers would be a huge disappointment. I hope that holds true.)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah I love the Pistons (home town and all). Joe Dumars did a great job putting them together... no stars (I mean, we traded away Stackhouse) but everyone plays intense and gutty, especially on defense. So many local fans don't know what to make of them because they win so ugly.

We're still the only team that won at Indiana this season so I expect the Pacers to come out charged this weekend... I have to admit they look very good and are a safe bet to win the East this year (I'll be VERY happy with a split, especially since our schedule this month is tough). The 'Stones will put up a fight though.

The Lakers gotta make the playoffs, right? But the way Dallas and especially Sacto are playing of late (those drubbings of the Nets and Mavs were pretty sick), they can't pull out another miracle can they? Not with an aging supporting staff around Kobe and Shaq at least (yeah I really hope so too).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I see the playoffs going like this:

EAST
1. New Jersey
2. Indiana
3. Detroit
4. New Orleans
5. Boston
6. Philadelphia
7. Orlando
8. Washington

WEST
1. Sacramento
2. Dallas
3. San Antonio
4. Portland
5. Phoenix
6. Los Angeles
7. Utah
8. Houston

The Kings look scary good. Playing the way they did against NJ and DAL, I don't think ANY team could beat them, from any era. Just amazing basketball. I really like Sacramento. My NBA team is Houston (Dream's my favorite player ever, and I love Francis so I stuck with them) and I just love Yao. They will squeak into the playoffs, but will fair badly. The Lakers will make the playoffs, but lose in the second round, I predict.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:34 (twenty-three years ago)

FUCK NO MINNESOTA WILL BE IN THE PLAYOFFS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

(so sorry we just had Jan birthday drinks at the office)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Man the West is tough (Pistons would be hovering around the 8 spot if we were over there).... it'd be hard to see Seattle or Minny not making it this year. It's REALLY scary that the Kings have been banged up all year but are still playing so well. If they have everyone healthy in the playoffs I think they could really get over hump (they were robbed last year in game 6 anyway).

I really like Houston a lot too. I'm glad that Francis' migraine problem is better this year, and they really have the making of a dynasty type team with Mobley, Franchise and Yao. Obviously give them a year or two to jel.

How do you feel about how Dream helped screw over the Raptors? Heh. I think it serves them right. Stupidest contract ever.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think the Sonics will make the playoffs. They have completely fallen apart, and even with Mason blossoming I don't think they'll make it. The burden on Payton will be too great. If things don't turn around soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see Payton dealt for a couple of young players and some draft picks. When you rely on perimeter shooting as much as the Sonics do, it becomes that much harder to right a wayward course (which they are clearly on now).

As for Minnesota, it's a two-man team -- Garnett and Wally. They really don't have any other solid players. Yes Garnett is great, but in the West you need more than one star and one excellent role-player. Utah is just automatic (Malone has built a career off of two shots -- layups and jumpers from the elbow) and will make the playoffs, only to go out in the first round. Plus, Harpring has been really good this season. I'm glad to see him excelling.

The Raptors I hate (and what the fuck's up with the rumors that they're gonna fire Wilkens?!?!?). Not working harder to keep McGrady to assuage Vince's ego (which is the only thing larger than his injury bug) was a serious gaff. I hated Dream sticking around for too long, but I'll give him a pass since he was such a gorgeous player. They have a good shot to get Lebron James next season, which will _not_ make them a better team. Two ballhogs and no defense will make them the new Milwaukee Bucks.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU R A HATER AND A PUNK GO TIMBOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 17 January 2003 21:58 (twenty-three years ago)

DUDE! Their leading scorers are Garnett, TIM FUCKING HUDSON, Wally (who has only played 8 games), Nesterovic and KENDALL FUCKING FUCKING FUCKING GILL!!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

A side note: I always respect music obsessives more if they are also sports obsessives (and digging only baseball doesn't count). Not exactly sure why, except that it's nice to know I'm not the only one (which it feels like among my group of friends).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

And TIM FUCKING HUDSON, which is wrong, is better than the real answer: TROY FUCKING HUDSON. I mean, if they had an Oakland pitcher as their second leading scorer then T'Wolves = Da Best!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Yancey's seedings, but the Lakers aren't going to lose in the second round.

If Minnesota were in the East they'd be the two or three seed.

dan (dan), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I totally hear you Yanc... I feel that my liking sports is what makes me different from all my narrowly-focused music-obssessive friends.

Minny is just so behind the eight ball with KG's absurd contract and having no draft picks cuz of Joe Smith. Plus they're called the Timberwolves. Heh.

It'll be interesting to see what happens in Seattle this year... Rick Sund used to be the Pistons GM before Joe Dumars and he's a bit of a clown, so anything is possible. I just think they have way too much talent to not be able to nail the 7 or 8 spot. They're going to try to hold on to Payton just for the sake of keeping the fans happy (but I think longterm it's a huge mistake).

I guess the thinking in Toronto is that Wilkens has SO many injuries to deal with that it's not really his fault. You could make a case for that seeing as how they just signed their FIFTH NBDL player. Oh just got rid of Nate Huffman, who was supposed to be their savior on the inside (oh boy).

I'll definitely give you that Hakeem was a beautiful player. Those two years they won the chamionship, I mean, it was such a simple game plan (get the ball to dream, spread the court with 3-point shooters) but it worked so well.

(Anyway, I'm out of here... have fun watching the game tonight!)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Lakers losing in the second round might be wishful thinking, but based on my seedings that would pit them against Sac in round two. The Kings will take them this year (and if not, mass suicide in Arco!!!).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, what the hell's wrong w/ being obsessed w/ baseball? (w/ w/ w/)

I'm geeked for tonight's showdown, but I've learn to set my expectations way low when it comes to the NBA. I was ultra-geeked for the Kings / Mavs game on Wednesday, until I started watching it, and the Mavs were down 10 in the first 90 seconds, and Nowitzki kept on doing the same stupid move (fake right, drive left, lose ball to 3 defenders EVERY SINGLE TIME), and it was pain (nice passing from zee Kings notwithstanding). The bricktastic Celtics / Hawks game was one billion times better, but that was due mostly to two things - the blatant lack of effort from the Hawks, and Celtics commentator / bigot Tommy Heinson asserting that WALTAH! could contribute 10+ points a game (& solid defense) if given the opportuntity. WALTAH! (as in McCarty, as in 0) proceeded to play like a gimpy walk-on for the next 3 Celt possessions - ah, serendipity.

Boy, I can't wait to hear the praise Bill Walton's gonna spew & hurl when LeBron James & Yao Ming play against each other.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I like flagellating myself with barbwire and the Warriors.

Yancey, I'll trade you JRich, Dunleavy and Fortson for Payton and the Sonic's number one.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:51 (twenty-three years ago)

ok ignorant englishman here, who the hell is called franchise?

when they used to show basketball on 4 (and how!) i used to like that croatian who got benched every time jordan played for the bulls. iu felt sorry for him. what was his name again?

zemko (bob), Saturday, 18 January 2003 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

also reading heated debate about sports u know nothing about = classic

do you americans do that with the uk football threads or is it just me?

zemko (bob), Saturday, 18 January 2003 04:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Toni Kukoc?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 18 January 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

oakley was my favorite Knick. i hate starks, partly because he's a punk but mainly because he blew game 7 in 1994.

i'll grant terrell owens is talented (though i think that a chimp could be "talented" in a west-coast offense), but he's still a jerk

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad someone defended Terrell Owens before I did, though I'm pretty sure most of my sympathising with him is tied into my hatred of the Cowboys.

James Blount, Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:35 (twenty-three years ago)

why the hate for the cowboys, when the niners are infinitely more loathsome? Jerry Jones never bothered me, at least not as much as the DeBartolos and Carmen Policy. (and i am a Giant fan, so if anyone should hate the 'boys yet doesn't ...)

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:43 (twenty-three years ago)

c'mon - Jerry Rice vs. Michael Irvin
Steve Young vs. Troy Aikman
George Seifert vs. Barry Switzer

plus, it should be noted that I'm in the south and hence have never actually met a Niners fan, while I have definitely met my share of Cowboy fans.

James Blount, Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd give it to the Cowboys, every time and in each of the circumstances you mentioned (and yes, i include giving it to Johnson over Bill Walsh, one of the most overrated head coaches of all time)

though i concede the Cowboys fans are pretty awful ... Niners fans up North are mostly band-wagon hoppers, which is a different (and arguably lesser) kind of awfulness than Cowboy-fan awfulness

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:58 (twenty-three years ago)

though perhaps the most fair comparison would be Landry v. Walsh ... and Landry would win that fight with no doubt in my mind at least

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, yeah - I love Tex Schramm era Cowboys, Hank Hill type fans, I just can't stand the 90's 'hookers n blow' version that was like everything I hated about the 80's Miami Hurricanes minus everything I liked (um, beating Barry Switzer in the Orange Bowl). I wouldn't call Bill Walsh overrated, but he seems to be more and more of a cancer on that franchise; it's the same problem Alabama fans have in that they still expect nothing less than a championship every year and they can't accept anyone other than Bear Bryant as their coach, only with the Niners their Bear Bryant is hanging out in the locker room after the game. I've never thought Mariucci was a great coach, but he got screwed (but not as bad as Jimmy Johnson).

James Blount, Saturday, 18 January 2003 06:08 (twenty-three years ago)

though i hate to admit it -- especially since he talked shit about the Giants after the Niners beat them -- Mariucci did get chumped. he did the best job he could with what was, essentially, an 8-8 team -- the only real stand-out on this Niners team is Terrell Owens (whether or not he's a jerk); Jeff Garcia is a sick joke of a QB, and the Niner defense is even worse. but Mariucci's treatment kinda proves my point, about how no-class the Niners organization really is (though no-one really believes the Niners "holier-than-thou" BS anymore, i think).

as for Walsh, i give him credit for two things and only two things -- he was shrewd enough to take advantage of the rule changes in the early eighties that made west-coast offenses more viable, and he knew what he had talent-wise (wr2 Montana, Craig, and Rice) and made the best of his team as he found it (as opposed to trying to turn Montana into an Elway or a Marino). the rest i chalk up to (a) being in a crappy conference; (b) running what was a gimmick offense (that teams didn't bother to defend against properly because it was gimmicky); and (c) having public-relation pros in the Niners front-office.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 January 2003 06:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Being the resident 9er fan on this board, I have but one thing to say: Warriors are the Cinderalla team this year! You heard it here first.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 18 January 2003 07:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i was wondering when you would appear to defend the niners, Leee :-)

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 18 January 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry for being late Tad. I was watching the Warriors MOPPING UP THE TWOLVES. Boykins is F A S T !
