Staying in on Friday nights.

I am so bored, being in on friday nights is like the noise the wipers make in your car when they're particularly wet. Also I have studied microeconomics and supply and demand for so long that I am going mad. NEVER AGAIN I TELL YOU, NEVER AGAIN. (as soon as exams are over i'll be making up for this, to great effect)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 22:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, staying in on Fridays is classic. I get the flat to myself (usually) and the computer is mine, and, erm, I hate going out on Fridays anyway, as London is swamped with Bridge and Tunnel and office people on the piss.

I just wish I had the money and the inclination to get drunk... And a dirty dronerock boy to get drunk with. I'd be old and married and boring if I had someone to be old and married and boring with...

kate, Friday, 17 January 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

It's horrible, the time goes so slow! I have been toying with the idea of drinking one beer and no more cos of having an exam tomorrow but I am too lazy to get up and go to the fridge.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess it helps that I live above a pub, so I get to hear how unpleasant drunk, stoned, partying people are and I have no desire to go and join them.

kate, Friday, 17 January 2003 23:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm on this muscle relaxant because I hurt my neck so it would be a bad idea to go out anyway. I will probably just hang around posting and calling people wankstas.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I miss an ILX neologism fest?

Staying in tonight eventually is sorta the plan. But I have to do some shopping first.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I got the beer and stuck on Freq Nasty, I CAN'T WAIT for tuesday I really can't, exams finish and I am going to go out forever.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I think it is the name of a song by that Puff Daddy "making the band" band. But I just love that word.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm catching up on e-mail and replying to one of my bestest friends, and realising that I was totally cockfarmingly rude to her last week, and throwing stupid Graham Coxon-esque stroppy fits and crap like that. And she's still my friend. Wow. Love really does mean never having to say sorry.

I can't wait for Tuesday, but I'm also kind of dreading it, cause it's my first solo show ever, and I so don't feel prepared, even though I've had my entire life to prepare for it.

kate, Friday, 17 January 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I like staying in on Friday nights. I'm usually too tired after a week at work to do much else. It's great winding down time.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I was just dancing beside the computer and got caught by my mum, I might go to bed in my embarassment. My usual friday is quietish, just going to the pub, but it's the lack of human contact that throws me when I stay in.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Were you actually playing music, Ronan? If so, that would cut down on the embarrassment factor.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I usually prefer staying in Friday nights. Going out, unless I'm surrounded by friends and constantly entertained, just reminds me of college too much. I'd rather watch a movie or hang out with friends (or, this semester, work till 9). Maybe it wouldn't have that effect if I still didn't live in this damn town...

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm bored also, ronan. i find a little ambient music while i study eases my woe...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I started to write some funny stuff, then some sad stuff. Now I'm going to write nothing except to say I was wondering why Ronan was posting now.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan don't take this like I'm sonning you or anything but extended exposure to a 9-5 workweek might change your mind on this issue. If it's Friday of a bad week and there's a bottle of wine in the apartment, my pants are off before I'm through the front door and they're not going back on until Saturday afternoon.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 17 January 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to stay in on Friday nights because I'm way too tired after a week at work. Also I work crazy hours like 6am - 1:30pm so my sleeping is whirled. There has to be something pretty good on to get me out on a Friday. Saturday's better anyway.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I do remember doing some temp work for a company (firm of headhunters)a couple of years back with a very definite work hard/play hard culture. They would all hit the wine bars and pubs of a Friday night and you were more or less forced to go. It was considered *highly* antisocial to go home straight away. They were a nice crowd though and I must admit there was a certain vibe about leaving the office to get smashed.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:17 (twenty-three years ago)

If it's Friday of a bad week and there's a bottle of wine in the apartment, my pants are off before I'm through the front door and they're not going back on until Saturday afternoon.

I'm exactly the same way... except I do wait until I'm in the door until I take my pants off.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the whole thing where work spills over into lavish well-dressed Friday drinking -- that's pretty great as well, and has the interesting side-effect of making sure people in the office who find one another the slightest bit attractive will eventually sleep together. But I work on the south side of Chicago now, so there's not really anyplace to spill out to.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm too tired to go out, I went out last night. Apparently firemen are sexual maniacs, who knew?

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 18 January 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 January 2003 04:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Also part of the "home Friday" crowd here. Taking a break from unpacking boxes and just chilling out with a glass of wine.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Saturday, 18 January 2003 04:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmm, wine. Good idea. (Actually, Chris, if you read this, get in touch with me about Jake being here this weekend...or hell, I'll probably just dig up yer phone number right now...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:02 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently Ally has never seen a post 9/11 porn movie.

Anyhow, I've got some sort of flu hence here I sit broken hearted...

James Blount, Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

plus: Yao vs. Shaq

James Blount, Saturday, 18 January 2003 05:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't fuck any firemen, but I did create an internet radio station. In comparison, that doesn't sound nearly as exciting. But in this life, you take what you can get.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 January 2003 06:43 (twenty-three years ago)

where does the name/phrase(?) cherchez la femme come from? my friend used to have a band called churchey la femme

ron (ron), Saturday, 18 January 2003 06:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Nabisco, I picture a bunch of editors in black ties and tails emerging from stretch limos, converging on Jimmy's.

For some reason I'm remembering that cherchez la femme comes from Dumas. Can anyone back me up on this?

What brings this phrase to mind, anyway?

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 18 January 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That fucking movie with Clint Eastwood and Bernadette Peters, that's what, with the pink cadillac. Yeah, I stayed in and drank a bottle and a half of wine and got really maudlin because I'm too tired for anything else.

nabisco (nabisco), Saturday, 18 January 2003 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

a song called cherchez la femme was playing on RAdio FrEE Jody BETh 1

ron (ron), Saturday, 18 January 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

From here:

Meaning

The common usage of this relates to the quest for a woman as a sexual partner. The original meaning refers to a problem that would be solved if a woman could be found.

Origin

Coined by Alexandre Dumas in Les Mohicans de Paris, 1864.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 January 2003 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Dumas! Aha! My overpriced education momentarily justifies itself.

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 18 January 2003 07:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 18 January 2003 08:21 (twenty-three years ago)

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 18 January 2003 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i was not drunk, i have no excuse

ron (ron), Saturday, 18 January 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I went out! I was asked out! By a very young cute guy! And I'm seeing him tonight too!

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 18 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Staying in on Fridays, classic in my book. But does 'going out' mean visiting some sort of licenced premises,or eating establishment? In the past few months,'going out' on Friday has resulted in driving to Stonehenge(it was really dark so we jumped over the fence to get a better look-the security didn't buy our story that we were bored and had just driven 150 miles to see the stones and called the plod!),trying to get on top of the Concorde that is at the entrance tunnel at Heathrow(again encountering security that didn't belive we needed a photo of us doing it for a treasure hunt-and Heathrow plod have got shooters!),and even driving to Paris because...well,for no particular reason except we were bored at home and wondered what the Eurotunnel was like. All went well with that particular expedition, until the nice chaps at customs pulled us and stripped our poor car down to find the contraband they were so sure we had hidden. We didn't even have any duty-free,which was a bummer.
So going out to pubs n clubs is not the only social activity to enjoy on a Friday.Use your imagination, and you too can be trying to blag your way out of bother with feeble excuses to persons in authority!

I just stay at home now and continue my research into recreational chemistry and indoor gardening.

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Sunday, 19 January 2003 01:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Post 9/11 porn!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I went out! I was asked out! By a very young cute guy! And I'm seeing him tonight too!

Rah! Hope it goes well!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 19 January 2003 02:07 (twenty-three years ago)

every night = friday night for me

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Sunday, 19 January 2003 09:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been out on a Friday night. Or a Saturday night... Or really any night.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 19 January 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

if nothing else, i would suspect your radiohead tour involved several instances of going out at night

ron (ron), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Advice to Melissa: get off the damn interweb and go outside!!!

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
revive. staying in on saturdays is awful too!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. fuck you all and your 'fun'.

i wz going to go out but decided against spending the evening shiteing on about King Crimson.

fcussen (Burger), Saturday, 31 January 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

wow this thread is nearly exactly a year ago! if I could go back I wouldn't change a thing, except I'd tell me I passed the microeconomics exam. 40 percent, bare minimum, oh yeah.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 31 January 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

but then you'd be all cocky and not do any work, thinking you'd get the minimum pass whatever, thus changing the course of history. now you are shining shoes on the street and there's a fierce wind a-blowin'

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 1 February 2004 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i havent really "gone out" on the weekend for about two or three months now, but i'm kinda getting used to it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 1 February 2004 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted badly to go out last night, but I got bored around 6:00 and had a couple glasses of cheap wine... I didn't wake up until around 11:00 at which point I had a headache. I will certainly rememdy this by tearing it up tonight (I hope).

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 1 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

stayed in last night, watched a movie with friends & the indie rock girl slept over again.

went out earlier to food shop. staying in tonight, getting drunk/stoned and eating vegan stirfry and (not vegan) pizza that my roommate made.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Finished my homework, going to go out with some people, maybe give some girl I met a call later on.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 1 February 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i wz going to go out but decided against spending the evening shiteing on about King Crimson.

Where would you go out to do that?!

It's Saturday and I'm staying in. This is the one night I had absolutely free for weeks, so I cleaned and paid bills and other boring shit. Now for beer and books, I guess.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i wz going to meet a friend of mine at a gig who i spent three hours with the other day talking about prog and why its great.

now that it is 3am and i am awake and drunk i've changed my mind and agree with ronan.

fcussen (Burger), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Was going to meet up with a good friend from out of town and some other folks, but the other folks never came through and the good friend is stuck doing some business work, d'oh! So I'm going to float out and get some quick bites to eat and hopefully catch up with other good peoples tomorrow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sick (bleargh) and so home with tea + chocolate + blackberry wine. I also spilled salad roll dipping sauce on my favorite sheets, so I had to drag myself out of bed to wash them, and I'm now wrapped in blankets waiting for them to dry. :(

Last night on the phone, Boy was exhausted (I think he'd been up 30ish hours, yikes) + really drunk, and I was sick but way hopped up on decongestants. I don't recommend trying to hold a conversation with 2 people in this state, it doesn't work too well.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, you have just put a snippet of a song with "all good people" or something along those lines in my head, arrgh! Errrm, is there anything on the High Fidelity soundtrack with lyrics like that? I'm getting driving-around Mt Hood type feelings, which would put it on that CD.

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Aha, Almost Famous soundtrack:
I've Seen All Good People: Your Move - Yes

lyra (lyra), Sunday, 1 February 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing guys clearly older and uglier than you score with young cutie-pies, classic or big motherfucking dud.

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 1 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I love microeconomics!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

After several months of going out straight from work every Friday, I was quite happy to rediscover the simple joy of going home and sitting about making dinner and watching TOTP before going out. It's great, gets you in the mood for the weekend far more, I think.

Staying in on Saturdays is horrible. Even more so since the demise of Match of the Day.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 February 2004 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Going out suxxors what the fuck? Unless it's to the cinema or something. You can't get decent wine in pubs, for starters.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

wine? pub? are you one of those metrosexuals?

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 2 February 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wine in pubs is for girls. So is the cinema.

(xpost haha)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 February 2004 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I like girls! In fairness, I never drink wone in pubs -- that's cos it's all new world bollox. NA d I don't really go to the cinema so much either -- so pricey. Real metrosexuals go out Mondays and Tuesdays only.

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 09:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique (Enrique), Monday, 2 February 2004 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

But isn't Thursday the new Friday?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 2 February 2004 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

at our office, wednesday is the new thursday.

(this has been said so much that it seems like an accurate phrase. it started because tons of people were taking thursdays off, so it was like a ghost town, like a friday usually is. now wednesdays are starting to be the same way. it's confusing to know when to come into work)
