Cheesecake.

Ate at ASK on Brizzol's Park Street last night before the Flips gig, had a great pizza (no surprise there) and then plumped for their chocolate cookie pieces cheesecake (vanilla cheesecake with bits of oreo in it!). It was fucking GRAND. Does anyone know where I can get some from a shop? Like, a whole big one rather than a slice for bloody £3.50?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 19 January 2003 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

is this the thread that will tear ile ASUNDER?!??

emma to thread!!

(ps nick you do know about ile's history of inexplicable cheesecake hatred, don't you?)

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 19 January 2003 12:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i was making a bagel w/ cream cheese last night and strangely enough my first thought was the title of that thread. next i thought about strawberry cream cheese and whether it still exists (and can we eat it).

the cheesecake saga

geeta, Sunday, 19 January 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Dunkin' Donuts now make something called "cheesecake donuts."

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:53 (twenty-three years ago)

The apex of western civilization: cheesecake-flavored cream cheese. Two birds, one stone. Dessert on a bagel!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 January 2003 17:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That,s quite redundant.Isn't cream cheese the main ingredient in Cheesecake??

brg30 (brg30), Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes! I know! It's brilliant!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh. My. God.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Me: "Then there's the sensible yet hearty graham cracker crust, the stately nightcap at the end of the indulgent bite."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 19 January 2003 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the temporary result is that I bought a vanilla cheesecake and a box of Oreos and I smacked the Oreos into crumbs and put them on top and it was LUSH. Numnum. Balls to all these cheesecake haters!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 20 January 2003 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

It depends on the kind of cheesecake you want, cos there are several kinds. I find that UK cheesecake, i.e. the kind you get in pubs or the frozen ones from Sainsburys are made with condensed milk and are overly sweet and gooey. Those vile cheesecake-in-a-box things you can get at the supermarket will turn out like that too.

You can get European style cheesecake from good delis. But this is more crumbly and not so sweet. It's usually sold in squares and is quite brown on top. I like it, but some people expecting the above find it too dry. The good thing is that it usually comes plain so you can add whatever topping you like.

Then there is what is often called New York style cheesecake over here - which to me is just traditional cheesecake made with a graham cracker crust, cream cheese/sour cream and has a nice balance of sour v.s sweet. Not as many places seem to serve it. You can buy whole ones at Costco for £10. Or just get a good recipe off Epicurious and make one yourself! Be warned: I've tried the so-called NYC style cheesecakes from Tescos or Sainsburys and to me, they didn't taste a thing like it.

and then there's philadelphia cheesecake, which is much softer in texture, less dense, creamy and very very good. i'm a big fan of the new york variety as well.

cheesecake made with condensed milk sounds awful. but i've never had that style of cheesecake.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 20 January 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheesecake is gopping. You people sicken me.

Emma, Monday, 20 January 2003 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham (graham), Monday, 20 January 2003 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...

Made this the other night.

Except I used hobnobs instead of digestives, 2 lemons not three didn't add sugar and Tesco only had light condensed milk. Which was good cos was still hella rich.

But as an easy peasy cheesecake I'd recommend it.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 27 September 2007 10:38 (eighteen years ago)

i make the oreo cookie cheesecake described above for parties and stuff. yum.

darraghmac, Thursday, 27 September 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

Could be done the same as ^^^ but bunging in oreos instead of lemon yes?

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 27 September 2007 11:09 (eighteen years ago)

um, after a quick look at the recipe, it's easier. the base is all oreo, crushed, buttered and frozen. the topping is a few oreos crushed finely, philadelphia and double cream, mixed and chucked on top of the base when it's hardened.

it's not very good for you, though.

darraghmac, Thursday, 27 September 2007 12:18 (eighteen years ago)

Of all the elements of my lifestyle that are a threat to my health I think cheesecake is the least of them. Definitely gonna give that one a go and then get all experi-MENTAL with cheesecake making.

Upt0eleven, Thursday, 27 September 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Haha ATP chili cheesecake to thread.

aldo, Thursday, 27 September 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

basically, any good cream cheese with gelatin or jelly and a digestive base is more than fair game to start from, i just like the oreo cookie one because there's no baking and it's real quick to make.

darraghmac, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

If Nick is still reading Ilx - Nick, I can hook you up with a website where you can get a whole one of those cheesecakes delivered to your door.....

Porkpie, Thursday, 27 September 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

Here is a BITCHING CHEESECAKE I made in hungry pac-man mode (the cake, not me). Grand Marnier swirls:

Basque cheesecake is super easy! Easier than regular cheesecake -- no crust, no water bath, just mix-pour-bake-chill at a high temp. Cracked and nearly-burnt are features, not bugs.

Congrats! I took most of mine to the bar and let coworkers share in my sin. But I've had my share.

Looks really good. Photogenic. Did you have any with a glass of sherry? I passed on that because I'm not a huge sherry fan.
