England vs Australia at football in February

If England loses this match - and consequently with it the last remaining vestige whatsoever of sporting supremacy over them lot down south - should they (we) just give up on sport and take up sewing or something ? Would this be a defining moment in Anglo-Antipodean relations ?

Of course, there's always the likelihood that few people in Oz other than a select few of Croatian and Greek origin actually care about footy and would thus even be aware of it if they did beat the Gamblers XI of England ...

i think England might lose, but it wont be a big deal really (Australis have beaten France and Brazil in the last 3 years, they only go to pieces in those tricky World Cup play-offs and that stops them putting in a reasonable show - they're probably as good as the U.S.A. right now)

consequently FIFA have decided to give the confederation of Oceania one guarantedd automatic qualifying place in the World Cup from now on (i think this is dumb and I wouldve made them play-off with an Asian team) but it means Australia will be the first team to qualify for Germany 2006 probably - hurrah

(i have been obssessing about the next World Cup for the last six months already...probably cos the last one was such a disappointment)

Yep... those WC2002 qualifying results again:

Oceania: Group 1 (Coffs Harbour, NSW, April 7-16 2001)

Tonga 0-22 Australia
Australia 31-0 American Samoa
Fiji 0-2 Australia
Australia 11-0 Samoa

Oceania: playoff (June 20 & 24 2001)

New Zealand 0-2 Australia
Australia 4-1 New Zealand

CSF/OFC Playoff (November 20 & 25 2001)

Australia 1-0 Uruguay
Uruguay 3-0 Australia

Now, just remove the pesky obstacle of the crack South American side...

I don't know, Michael, I quite fancy American Samoa next time.
