for the record, i agree that Steve Mariucci got a raw deal. to get this past season's niners into the playoffs was a good feat -- especially since IMHO the only standout on the team is Terrell Owens (even though as a person he may be a jerk -- and he ain't no Jerry Rice -- i will concede he's still pretty good).
anyway, what they did to Mariucci kinda underscores my major anti-niners beef -- i think that they are a very no-class organization. (lest we forget, they also gave george seifert the raw deal when he didn't win another Super Bowl). and they're hypocrites about it. which is one of the major reasons why they get on my nerves, much more so than, say, jerry jones and the cowboys.
as fer the west coast offense -- it isn't so "gimmicky" now that so many other teams run some variant of it (including, yes, my beloved Jets). in light of the foregoing, a better term for it nowadays would be "insidious" -- i think it's a boring offensive scheme. watching those dinky two-yard long-handoff slants is like watching paint dry or professional golf. i concede that that's as much an aesthetic judgment as anything else. but i certainly don't think that it's the "best" offense ever devised, and absolutely don't think that it makes for exciting or imaginative football.

My thoughts on Mooch are as follows. As far as personal characteristics, he may be too good for the 9ers and possibly the entire NFL. And from a limited football-scope, it was probably a good idea for him to leave our beloved soap opera. But looking at the situation from crimson and gold spectacles, I remember the numbers Garcia put up last season and then witness the complete boredom of this season, with basically the same personnel, and the shortsighted fan in me sez we need a new coach.
And because management has historically been cannabilistic and rather graceless this time around, I sympathize with Mariucci, although I'm not 100% behind him; he's too savvy at media-relations to be given a blank sympathy check.
