What do you know about him? His personal life? Was he gay? Did he commit suicide? Was his life tragic?

The one that makes the chicken?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, he isn't the KFC colonel, mr. dastoor you silly man!

i know that ray davies name-checked him in "celluloid heroes" (which is why erik is asking about him?) i always presumed that he was some sort of early 20th-century british actor.

don't know anything other than that?

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

no, his hysterical suicide note mentioned in the suave thread. and I saw the 40s film adaptation of the chicken of dorian gray, where he stars as lord cock, that's why I'm asking. you silly dandies!

erik, Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

under the pseudonym of "pharaoh" sanders, he became one of the more prominent exponents of post-coltrane jazz saxophone. interesting how, following his suicide in 1972, the quality of "pharaoh" sanders records decreased rapidly.

I have to run (to jury duty of all things!) but George Sanders was a moooovie actor, one of the better ones in my opinion. He perfected a certain kind of role: that of the sophisticated gentleman, absolutely suave (certainly charmed the ladies), but often amoral as well. Sometimes as in A Scandal in Paris, he played rogues repentant, but often as in Moonfleet, he just played outright scoundrels. Only occasionally did he break from typecasting, as in Rossellini's Voyage in Italy with Ingrid Bergman.

He was not gay to my knowledge. He was married a few times. His last two marriages were to Zsa Zsa and Magda Gabor, respectively. (Apparently ZZ drove him to distraction, and he took refuge on a houseboat for a while.) He killed himself in the early '70s. He wrote a book called, I think, Memoir of a Cad, which is very quotable. Douglas Sirk called him the smartest man in Hollywood.

Hope that helps.

He was particularly suave in The Kremlin Letter

According to IMDB, he was working in advertising when a secretary at the firm--Greer Garson--suggested he look into acting.

He was also Mr. Freeze on Batman the TV series, and the voice of Shere Khan the tiger in The Jungle Book,. I wish I'd seen more of his old films, like the ones Amateurist mentions. Addison DeWitt is one of my favorite characters.

I believe that - bizarrely - he also owned a nightclub in Balham.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Why isn't that Kremlin Letter photo appearing? Well, try this:

Apprently he took his own life in a hotel in Castelldefels. "I'm not bloody surprised," said my wife. On the plus side, this is the only interesting thing ever to have happened in Castelldefels, apart from floods.

His performance in the Rossellini film referred to above is quite other-worldly.

I have to admit to never having been as impressed with Voyage in Italy as, say, my film professor or Jacques Rivette, but Sanders is extraordinary in it.

"Dear World: I am leaving because I am bored. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool." ~~ George's suicide note...

on another, similar thread...
Does anyone happen to know if these words, attributed to the dying Oscar Wilde, are fact or fiction:

"Either that wallpaper goes, or I do."

Thanks, every1, for making these posts so rootin-tootin interesting!
peace,
diane

Recently observed during Halloween/Spooky Week RKO Lewton/Tourneur viewings that Tom Conway sounded just like George Sanders and is in fact his younger brother.

Conway even took over for Sanders in the role of The Falcon, the protagonist of a once popular film series I've never seen and only recently heard of.

I was so surprised to find out he was Russian, because his screen persona was more English than English.

When I was a kid I saw Psychomania on TV and LOVED it. Thought it was the coolest flick. Was sad to learn years later that it was George Sanders' last film.

Josefa, Wednesday, 5 November 2025 01:14 (seven months ago)

Launder and Gilliat, the Boultings etc.

Nicholas Raybeat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 November 2025 01:23 (seven months ago)

Meant to say
Sounds good, still need to watch the British biker film mentioned here ^, The Damned.

Nicholas Raybeat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 November 2025 01:24 (seven months ago)

The Damned is very good - perhaps I undersold it upthread - but in Psychomania bikers purposely kill themselves because they know they can come back from the dead (on bikes) which is amazing. It's all due to a psychedelic toad iirc.

Josefa, Wednesday, 5 November 2025 01:34 (seven months ago)

What was the British movie I saw recently with a psychedelic toad angle? Oh yeah, Bird.

Nicholas Raybeat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 November 2025 01:41 (seven months ago)

The Picture of Dorian Gray is good.

Nicholas Raybeat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 9 November 2025 04:10 (seven months ago)

In addition to everything else, the cinematographer, Harry Stradling, won a well-deserved Oscar.

Sturges regular Jimmy Conlin and Skelton Knaggs from The Ghost Ship are both in it for a split second each.

Psychomania is on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGxQRA30jDY and is a must see.

If you don’t fancy watching the whole thing there’s a very funny interview with Nicky Henson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1-tDvENdkE

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 9 November 2025 08:38 (seven months ago)

I'd recommend watching the whole thing! Absolute Brit biker zombie classic, nothing else like it out there. I'm amazed Rob Zombie hasn't remade it badly.
