One of the reasons life is not what it could be

I had to approach someone in the office I didn't know about a work matter. Every fortnightly departmental meeting I have said I'm onto it, they're slippery to get hold of etc. He didn't respond to an email and then I got a block about ringing. I used to worry about it at night. I thought of exuses why each moment was not the right time and considered ringing from home or my mobile so that no one could overhear the conversation (but then I thought he might have one of the phones that tells you which extension is calling and it would seem weird to have been phoning from outside).

There's another meeting tomorrow. I just made the call. It took 30 secs. It's fine and he's coming down to chat about the matter at 2.30.

I am an idiot.

You're not an idiot at all, Nick. This happens to me all the time. I hate having to phone people I don't know in a work situation and pretend I know what I'm talking about. So far I've been getting away with it and coming through unscathed.

Yes Ben but I am 29 and supposedly arrogant.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

And I do know what I'm talking about.

I hate situations like that myself, I think lots of people do. I think it's mostly the arrogant business trolls who enjoy Who Moved My Cheese? that have no problem with things like that.

That's a point. WHO DID MOVE MY CHEESE?

The Man.

This is one good thing about my job - never ever having to phone people about anything. Refusing to use anything other than email just shows what a technologically-advanced organisation we are.

Oh, and The Boss seems to try and keep me away from the clients if he can. I think he's worried I'll say something less-than-tactful to them.

I have to contact people all the time, I use email because its quicker and its also logged.

But sometimes I have day's where I'll enjoy ringing people up.

Pretending to know what I'm on about is a skill I take pride in.

This happens to me all the time. I'll have something as simple on my To Do list at work as calling someone up but I dread it like death. Then, eventually, I take a deep breath and get to it and it's over in minutes. Kind of like getting a shot. No, not like that at all. I hate getting shots too much. And not that much like death either cuz that doesn't necessarily have a happy solution... Did I mention I was sick all weekend? Yeah... And played too much Sims last night???
