For the last six or seven weeks, there's been quite a young homeless guy sleeping in the doorway of one of the shops I pass every day on the way into work. Actually, I'm not quite sure when I first noticed him, but I remember a while back noticing him sitting there reading a book and thinking how unusual it seemed, even though it shouldn't do.
For a while now, because we walk past him every single day, myself and a few workmates have been taking him turns to buy him something to eat and a cup of tea. Then last week my boss came into the office looking worried about something, and said that he'd had a conversation with the guy, who was complaining that last night some kids had run off with his blanket the previous night, and as he was chasing after them he'd become separated from his dog. He went on to say that he thought his dog had been hit by a car and killed while running after him.
Now whichever way you look at it that's a pretty fucking low place to be, but when I walked past this morning I noticed he was clutching his dog again! Don't know how he found it, or whether his dog found him, but it cheered me up to such an extent that I gave him a tenner, and walked off with a warm self-congratulatory glow.

Yes, but does he pull on his sleeve when he cries?

Don't dis cute ickle David!
I thought this story was gonna end with you saying how you walked by and he wasn't there, so you asked where he was and somebody told you he'd won the lottery/discovered a long lost rich uncle/been given a job at your firm....

This is the thread when you are actively encouraged to be very cutesy and twee, obviously. And to suspend cynicism. Go forth and be twee!

I already told my boring
squirrel story which was twee but involved only kindness to squirrels, but . . .
The one I am kind of proud of is when I gave away my tickets for the second Primal Scream show in LA in summer 2000. The first night's show was life-changing for a variety of reasons that kate and others will understand: House of Blues on Sunset has the best sound in LA, someone godlike like Kevin Shields and Mani were in the band as well as other impromptu sleb musicians, etc. I was dying to go again but I gave the tickets to a near-stranger who somehow conveyed his need to see them on a level I could empathize with. I don't even remember the person's name. My friend who I was supposed to take was like "oh?" when I told her I gave our tickets away.
