ILX Spoken Word

Listening to Marcello on the radio an old idea recurred - a spoken word compilation of ILXors reading out stuff they've written, to whatever backing they fancy. Anyone else like this notion?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

would you put it together on a website or on tape or wha? if it's a website i think it's a great idea. (if it's not, it's still a really cool idea, i just wouldn't be able to hear.)

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It sounds like a good idea! If you wanna put it on a CD I know a good place to get them made. As to whether I'd participate, I dunno, coz I don't think I've written anything worthy/good enough. Unless I write some sort of fairy/weird story, and put on silly voices and make it so it's a little like "mount vernon and far away" by Brian Wilson.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

how about a spoken word version of "island of the canibles?"

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

It would be excellent to read a few threads out loud over backing music.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Pete and I could do the long-awaited* Island Of The Smuglers as a radio play

*by no-one

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

you should! I have a 4-track if you need something to record on.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

What with never having written anything worth reading out and having a rubbish voice (though Gareth likes it when I say 'hardcore' in my Bristolian accent), I shan't be volunteering. I can see entertainment from some sources here, certainly.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

How about doing an entire thread on a CD, with musical accompaniment.

and everytime the person speaking changes, the music changes too - like that Strokes track!

ideally it should be one of the more [ahem] extreme threads.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

are you guys actually going to say things like sux0r and hurrah and obv? if so I want ten copies!!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

and GREBT!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

martin you have a nice voice!!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

DV's idea is grate. The original idea is grate, too. A side / B side?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you Mark but you are a liar. I have heard recordings of me from radio interviews, and it depresses the hell out of me: nasal, muddy, and an unappealing accent (who ever found the Bristol accent attractive?).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:22 (twenty-three years ago)

You can always get a voice synth of the net and put threads through that. I've got one called ReadPlease2000 that makes everything hawkinghilarious.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 21 January 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

an excellent notion! i've thought about starting 'what do you sound like' type threads several times...i have one of those crappy PC microphones you plug into your soundcard so its easy for me to record my voice reading some of my Mikey Streets hyperbole ;)

who else has a mic? i think we should def. do the voice thread if it hasnt been done before / recently

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

oh piffpaff, EVERYONE hates their own voice in recordings, that evidence doesn't count at all in any way and is stricken from the books

i like the bristol accent: the teachers who ran my primary school were a husband and wife from there, i associate it with firm fairness

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a voice thread:

Ah fuck it, what do you sound like?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I want Jay-Z/Nas as a book-on-tape for some long-ass car ride.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

if any one wants to hear me recite homoerotic verse then i can

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:34 (twenty-three years ago)

I would so love to show off my voice, as it's all I've got going for me.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyone up for some Dan Perry interpreted through the awkward slurrings of a 15-year-old?

Curtis Stephens, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I give any new 'voices' thread exactly two dozen posts before someone spoils the whole thing by saying something pornographic in the register of Meatwad from the Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 01:41 (twenty-three years ago)

sumthin like this?

http://members.lycos.co.uk/vicc13/mp3s/hunta-d.mp3

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 04:16 (twenty-three years ago)

If anthony does homoerotic verse, I will do non-homo non-erotic verse, maybe.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I could do one or two word interjections between the selections.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 05:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I can do my Sylvia Plath biting verse. And I could even try to read it like Sylvia Plath!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm told I sound very cute when I talk in my sleep?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

(Respondents may be biased.)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 06:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd love to do this--I can muster a fairly good radio voice when I try to. Maybe just reading writings we like would be far less of a logistical nightmare than an entire thread.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 06:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, Matos has a great voice! Also obviously Alan and Geeta and Felicity could sound totally NPR if she wanted to.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also I would like to hear Mark do a Christopher Hitchens impersonation.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Let us not forget Mr. Andy Battaglia here.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Spencer Chow and I should do the smooth West Coast announcer thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned Raggett OWNS this comp

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:05 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hi, this is Ned Raggett. Many are the voices of ILX and we bring them here to you now. No, don't get up."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I was making too many mixed-up Reader-vs-Onion faux pas when I met Andy to notice the voice!

I am mostly imagining the Dunedin crew doing one of those bad high-school unison shout-outs: "Hi - we're - from - Dun - e - din - New - Zea - land - and - we - love - ev - er - y - thing" (collapse into giggles).

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"Five stars!"--Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

The Dunedin crew together would be of the uberlords.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy's not loud like me but his voice is pretty good, I think. Felicity is a shoo-in, too.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Douglas is a radio host, too, duh; maybe he'd be into it.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:13 (twenty-three years ago)

What about me? I have a great speaking voice!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:16 (twenty-three years ago)

How about a regular CD--ILxors reading their own writing--and a remix CD, with ILxors reading the writing of others? Sort of like what 102 Beats That! was supposed to be, once upon a really really fucking long time ago?

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"ILx: We Invented the Remix"

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Or better yet: "Use Other Words Please"

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Disc 3: ILXors manipulate source material from spoken-word albums to create stunning compilation of droning, glitching, ambient IDM and microhouse (review by Mark Richardson)

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:27 (twenty-three years ago)

(reviewed by Pitchfork; imagine the revenge!)

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I really want to read some poems.

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:38 (twenty-three years ago)

you totally do, JBR

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 07:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I am very into this. I would like to do my famous Lungfish impression.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 09:38 (twenty-three years ago)

how about doing the thread where Kate does her porn tape impersonation?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

you all say how cool this would be but dont download (how can i do an angry smiley?)

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

How will Ned pronounce ;-)? Will he say "This is all rubbish, semi-colon dash right bracket."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I think we should nominate someone to interject with the words 'winking smiley' whenever one occurs - this should be recorded and inserted at the appropriate point regardless of who is speaking.

We could also ask the Pinefox to say "Blue writing" whenever there's some blue writing.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

How will Ned pronounce ;-)?

For me to know, for you to find out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Colin can only do his Lungfish schtick if there's a multimedia portion to this project, because lord knows no Lungfish schtick is complete w/out the birthing-yourself-through-hands-as-vagina thing.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Jones can do the Foley work for that.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I can do "what happened if the coin had come down the other way" on Heroes Or Zeroes.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

for neds ;-) it should be a 1,2,3 on the xylophone!

Bagsy doing the horse hoves by clumping coconut shells.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

nice idea! I'll put my john cage voice on heh.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:38 (twenty-three years ago)

CHUPA IS A GENIUS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

He should read everything.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna be the "winking smiley" person. That sounds so rude! If for no other reason than I think the Scottish contingent needs represented and I have no creations of my own to contribute. I could do it in a wee Jimmy Krankie type way....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Blue Writing

the pinefox, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

(haha we should read the test HTML thread!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)
