Worst. Game. Ever.

As a repose to the "Most Loved Game" thread, what computerised games have you played that made you want to find the programmers and beat them to death with Ge-force 2 MX?

My personal hated games are the hilarious "Knightmare" game for the Spectrum that contained a bug so you couldn't actually get passed the first two screens, the utter unplayable horror that was Tunnel B-1 and Metal Gear Solid. Great gameplay on the latter but a story so damn childish that I couldn't play it beyond a certain point as I was laughing so damn hard at the plot. You play a guy called "Solid Snake". I rest my case.

DRAKKHEN.

Curtis Stephens, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Explain?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Horrible, horrible game for the SNES. You can't even control your characters most of the time, they just wander off on their own and eventually get killed by a constellation that jumps out of the sky.

Curtis Stephens, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Drakkhen? I played that on SNES and it was... ummmmmmm bad. As in, some big polygonal dragon-thing would swoop down without warning and kill your party in three seconds. But not the worst game by far.

The Action 52 for NES would have to be the worst, especially for the people who bought it for the full $200 price.

(btw, TSR's NES archive is one of the best pages on the web, even if it is not updated anymore)

The ROM Pit at http://www.somethingawful.com/ is pretty good for horror stories about atrotious games. The Hentai reviews are so disturbing I advise caution.

The Long Game

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Felicity!

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, Lynskey, I missed the "computerised" part of your question.

. . . or did I?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends on wether you are stalking me or not. Please say you aren't stalking me.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 03:12 (twenty-three years ago)

"you aren't stalking me"

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 03:22 (twenty-three years ago)

That's better.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 03:28 (twenty-three years ago)

But the guy has always been called Solid Snake since Metal Gear came out on Gamboy. I lvoe the game but I'll be dammed if I can get past it on my emulator, can't remeber where the rockets are that you need to blow up the boss.
The humour is pretty cheap. Solid Snake takes his faux name from Escape From New York, how appropriate.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 03:37 (twenty-three years ago)

There's that Olympics game for the PS1 where you just have to punch the buttons as fast as possible. Absolute pants.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

there was a simpsons game on super nintendo that sucked arse. also, i haven't played it but i really don't like the look of uno 'ultra' or whatever it's called - the one where if you lose a little machine spits hundreds of cards of you in a rapid fire deluge

minna (minna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

cards AT you forgive me for i am drunk

minna (minna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Ultimate Scrabble was rubbish. There was nothing Ultimate about it.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Metal Gear Solid, what shite. I bought it one day, played it for a few hours and got so pissed off at how shitty it was. Returned it approx 5 hours after I bought it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

has there been a scrabble game since, pete?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Waxworks on the spectrum. pile of shit.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Metal Gear Solid??????? You mentalists, that was the best game ever. EVER. Who cares about the storyline, I'm not playing a film, the only problem with MGS was it was so easy.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yep. eXtreeme Scabble.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Recently i found "the Getaway to be one of the most boring games i've played for a long time, i guess it was as a result of charging round like a mentalist and firing 800 rounds a second on GTA3/4 but to suddenly have to creep and fire 6 rounds - phew boring.

Has there ever been a good Simpsons game? I remember liking the arcade game, but the Nintendo version sucked, and I have two other Simpsons Nintendo games (one with aliens and one that's around the world or something) that also suck. Then my friend got me Simpsons Road Rage for PS2, and while it's fun for a few minutes, it seems pretty pointless.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

>Has there ever been a good Simpsons game?

More like, has there ever been a good game based on a license? Most licensed games are just poor versions of whatever are the currently popular game archetypes, except w/ different, license-based graphics.
The Simpsons arcade game was just the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game except with different graphics, which itself was a mediocre 3/4-view side scroller.

One exception is the obscure, Macross-based shooter games for the SNES.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Most US Gold film tie-ins during the 1980s were K-rub.

A game I made called 'Dan Druff and the Invasion of the Greicans' was very poor, not least because it had a start-up screen using ASCII characters and had nothing else besides that screen.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Simpsons Wrestling provided hours of betting between me and my brothers. The game itself was too easy.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Simpsons trivia game terrible on all counts, but worth every penny for the small poster of EVERY character in the show (including Inanimate Carbon Rod)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

those terminator games where no one got past the first level you kinda walked along and died, sometimes you got to the end but you never knew what to do

good people got seriously retarded when it came to nes simpsons vs the space mutants... like, it was easy

zemko (bob), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:31 (twenty-three years ago)

turtles on the nes was compelling and i clocked it yes i did but i cannot say i enjoyed it in the slightest. konami bastards

zemko (bob), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it was cos it was happy go lucky cowabunga dudes turtles in a soulles pitiless grind of death game. even eastman and laird turtles cracked joke every now and then

TMNT games = bad
TMNT comic books = awesome. feel the might.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i downloaded the rom of that drakkhen thing because of this thread. a lizard thing came out of nowhere and killed most of my characters and then the remainding ones walked into a lake.

that NES turtles game was like a horrible unresolved childhood anxiety. i even remember finally figuring out the underwater timebomb stuff only to realize the game kept going on... i was too exhausted to keep up. i liked how when you were about to die it played this awful haunting beeping noise.

Seanbaby has a scathing and amusing "Top 20 Worst Games" list here:
http://www.seanbaby.com/nes/egm.htm

#1: E.T.

Predating GTA in the "morally bankrupt" category is Custer's Revenge (surely this has been discussed on ILE before).

Ernest P. (ernestp), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I've played that game! I never figured out the neck thing or what the heck I supposed to be doing.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:20 (twenty-three years ago)
