Most commone newbie trap = thinking there are newbie traps.

(Didn't Newbie Trap come in second at 14/1 in the 4:20 at Kempton yesterday).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

What does U&K mean? I'm sure it's blindingly obvious but it's not in the FAQ and it's too short a phrase to search for.

Alfie (Alfie), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The newbie trap is that cunningly-disguised hole over there with all the sharp spikes at the bottom.

Avoiding it is Urgent and Key, of course.

*rolls saving throw vs newbie traps*

You are now offically Geek-kit 4evah more!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

If you know the rules to Mornington Crescent, you'll do just fine. If you don't, we'll GOBBLE YOU UP! ;-)

Gordon (Gordon), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello, Heather. welcome to ILX!

Which threads are already done to death

I certainly wouldn't worry abt this....you, as a newcomer will no doubt have some interesting new opinions to offer on subjects we have discussed in much detail in the past. The chances are that sometimes you'll be able to express ideas that none of us have considered before. It's quite fun to pick a really old thread and add something sometimes.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:19 (twenty-three years ago)

You are now offically Geek-kit 4evah more!

i'll drink to that.
er, when i get home.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The only thing I'd add about restarting old threads is to read them first. Some people seem not to bother with this elementary step.

Phil Spector didn't produce the Shangri-Las - it was Shadow Moreton. (Sorry, standing FAQ joke from another place. We seemed to have to point this out to everyone at some point. There was another, Nametab is Bateman spelt backwards, but that will make even less sense here.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

phew.

hi, heather.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

NAMTAB (drug taken by Viet Cong) is BATMAN backwards.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

If you see a thread featuring the name of some no-doubt cultural colossus who you've never heard of, don't click on it as you will immediately feel incredibly stupid.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What Mark C said.

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

The good thing abt ILX compared to most other boards is that all threads live forever i.e. you can contribute to and revive an old thread - so when people say oh we've done that topic and link to and old thread they're not saying "shut up newbie" theyre saying "hey lets keep it in one place"

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't argue with N. You'll lose. There ends my advice.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't take SittingPretty's advice.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

That's great advice, Tim.

ILX (Alan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Speaking of etiquette, I posted earlier without introducing myself. Hello. I am new here.

JD (JND), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

hi new people, and welcome :-)

donna (donna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Also the burst of geekiness at the start of this thread is an exception, rather than the rule.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I am sort of new here, but don't let bieng a newbie put you off.Say what you want, they let you get away with it!Since joining in the fun here,I've been questioned on whether I come from the same planet,do I live in 1992,am I on drugs, etc. All compliments in my book!Enjoy!

As for things written backwards...'racecar' is...erm,racecar!And if anyone has or knows someone who has a turntable and a copy of DJPC's 'Insomniak',play the tune to where it goes "INSOMNIAC,I MUST SLEEP".Then(here comes the spooky bit),wind the record backwards at the same sort of speed, and you will hear "INSOMNIAC,I MUST SLEEP".How can this be?The work of the devil.....

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i love new people, they taste like bones and raw manflesh.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 23 January 2003 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

eight years pass...

I'm wondering about the etiquette of using ILX to help with non-ILX projects. I'd like to ask for input from people into an idea I have about setting up a creative arts centre, but it strikes me that ILX0rs do not do this, as a rule? Would it be uncool?

How dare you even think of such a thing. Just... how dare you!!

dell (del), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 12:54 (fourteen years ago)

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

Oh no, there have been a few threads like that. As long as you're looking more for ideas and input, anyway, and not just linking to your kickstartr page or something.

emil.y, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 12:55 (fourteen years ago)

2 to 1 in favour, great, I will put away my sadkitty.jpg and write a post!

Also unknown as Zora (Surfing At Work), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 13:07 (fourteen years ago)

Yes, do it!

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 13:35 (fourteen years ago)

'd like to ask for input from people into an idea I have about setting up a creative arts centre, but it strikes me that ILX0rs do not do this, as a rule?

I don't think it is frowned upon, I think most of us are too lazy to do something like this.

Nicole, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

pfft i set up creative arts centers like everyday

lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 January 2012 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Don't read threads about tv shows.
