OK, what snack, readily available from newsagents and London underground stations, most perfectly combines the qualities of "nutritious", "filling", "tasty" and "cheap"?

I don't know the answer by the way, but your thoughts are appreciated.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

To make it easire, Ill prioritise out of 10.

Cheap 6/10
Tasty 6/10
Nutritious 7/10
Filling 9/10

Yes, for the purposes of this thread, I would rather it was "filling" than "tasty, as I always get hungry too fast.

what you ask is impossible!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Crisps! They're great! Smoky Bacon are tastiest, probably. And they're certainly nutritious, because they're vegetables!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Mini Creme Eggs!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:25 (twenty-three years ago)

A can of V8 tomato vegetable juice is about 60p and a good partial substitute for lunch.

If you can stomach a Purdey's, that chock full of vitamins. Personally I think it's the devil's wee but others have different ideas. I guess that's about £1 - £1.50?

If you are feeling super wobbly (low blood sugar) then drink a Lucozade, that'll pick you up until you can get some real food. £1 or so...

Te cheapest would be---NOTHING! You PIGS!!!Don't snack, that makes you fat, and fat is nasty, sick, disgusting, horrible, offensive, need I go on?!?!?!?!?!?!

Laura, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Never has 'do not feed the troll' been more appropriate.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Go eat a cake.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Pringles mother fucker.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Apples. Fruit is Nature's candy.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Go eat a cake - new meme, I feel so proud. [tears well up, phones mother etc]

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Boost! Biscuity goodness but it'a hefty bar. How about flapjacks? You won't be eating again for 48 hours after one of them, and they're usually under a quid.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

candy bars! cheap, tasty, and filling. or those packages of peanut butter cookies, they're kind of gross but they are extremely filling.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely sugar is natures candy.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Apples. Fruit is Nature's candy.

Then nature sucks ass for not having chocolate bar trees.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Flapjacks and apples...that's one way to stay regular!

elisabeth k, Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels

B-b-but cocoa beans come from a shrub! And sugar comes from plants!

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 22:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Purdey's is awful. They were handing it out bottles free in Manchester on the day I left and I still feel they owe me.

Crisps are rubbish snacks, I've decided.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

NY subway version: Planter's peanuts, tiny bag size

Cheap -- about 65 cents
Tasty -- a bit salty
Nutritious -- high protein but high fat
Filling -- yes

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 23 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Once again, Ned's made me laugh out loud. Might have been better had I not had a mouthful of water at the time, but hey...

BRANSTON PICKLE FLAVOUR CHEDDARS ARE THE SNACK THAT KEEPS ON GIVING.

Alba, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

(mini cheddars, that is)

Alba, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 11:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, indigestion's a bitch.

aldo, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 11:24 (seventeen years ago)

Pick three...
My favourites are those big bags of "onion rings" - filling, tasty, cheap... Not nutritious...

snoball, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 11:29 (seventeen years ago)

hey why the fuck do UTZ Salt & Pepper chips have onion and garlic powder on them? what's the deal there? Did just throwing black (and white) pepper on your regular chips make you feel lazy, UTZ? cuz it's too much trouble for me, so thanks for nothing.

PS to elisabeth "V8 is a snack" k upthread: sorry, but you and I were never gonna happen...

Kerm, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

La Lechera, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

when someone eats a bowl of vegetable soup with a slotted spoon, hands me whats left and says "put this in the dishwasher... or you could pretend it's a snack," i am no longer cool with that person.

Kerm, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 12:10 (seventeen years ago)

What if this person is dying of the dropsy from their canopied bed? I mean, I defs wld not eat that as a pretend snack, but that is the only situation in which I can see someone eating soup in that fashion.

otm, surely this is the "fast, cheap, and reliable" of food.

kenan, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

I can't eat a granola bar. It takes me at least 45 minutes and I feel sadder with every bite/~35 chews.

Abbott, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

You're not eating the right granola bars!

http://www.kashi.com/products/chewy_granola_bars_cherry_dark_chocolate

kenan, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:55 (seventeen years ago)

The cherry dark chocolate flavor is a many-splendored thing. Neither the cherry or the chocolate are overpowering or cloying, which isn't something you often get with cherry or chocolate.

kenan, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

there is such a thing as dark chocolate chex mix now. btw the pumpkin granola bars (forget who makes them) are really good. kashi makes one but it's the crunchy kind

tremendoid, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:08 (seventeen years ago)

granola bars are too small and not filling ever

bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

my default good cheap snack is a granny smith apple. Also, it keeps doctors away.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

I like baby carrots. They're like freakishly filling. I could eat like 4 bananas and not really feel tided over (and I'd get the farts) (tho I <3 u bananas, please understand).

Abbott, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

baby carrots so expensive, though! I do like, er, adult carrots a lot for snackage

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

baby carrots with hummus

bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

they also seem to make my stomach feel better sometimes - like if i've eaten too much of something greasy and acidic they help reset the balance.

but sometimes carrots make me hiccup. it's weird.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)

fruit leather. trader joe's has it for like $0.49 and sometimes it is fiber-enhanced.

tehresa, Wednesday, 30 July 2008 19:31 (seventeen years ago)

seven months pass...

i love fruit leather (i think)

but right now i don't have it. i could get those dried apricots!
