(once again, i can't believe we haven't covered this, but my lame searching can't find anything.)

shaving: results = classic, process = v dud. esp if (like me) your stubble grows v quickly and you have really sensitive skin so it hurts lots.

anyway, my current lineup of shaving products = mach 3 razor (w/ mach 3 turbo blades at the mo - are they actually available in england??), king of shaves sensitive etc gel, and nivea soothing aftershave lotion. but i still don't get completely smooth skin, and i still get stubble rash. what am i doing wrong??

also: common anti-rash advice seems to be "never shave against the grain". is it just me or is it completely impossible to get anything like a smooth shave by doing this?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

This thread is so perfectly one I could have started - I DEMAND you answer it!

I used to get a lot of spots on the right hand side of my chin. I changed my shaving angle and it totally made a difference! However, I seem to have started getting spots on the *left* side of my chin now instead, despite, as far as I can tell, using exactly the same motion. I guess the sebum has to get out somehow...

As far as I remember I was never taught to shave. That's why this thread is so urgent+key.

I don't shave. I *wax*.

Destroy (for practical reasons): my ancient philishave tracer, it's kinda on its last legs.

Search (for sentimental reasons): my ancient philishave tracer, who cares if it don't work so well anymore?

Soap and water = u&k. You get the best lather.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

4 best shave u need to heat yr face up first obv, then slap on some BABY OIL or some such v important this one, then after that use lather etc what you will. (soap makes face feel tight, but dove is ok), afterwards fling on some cold water. moisturise etc

zemko (bob), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

the postshave products are the ones to s/d

zemko (bob), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:25 (twenty-three years ago)

i am fond of kiehls' one but it costs £££

zemko (bob), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:26 (twenty-three years ago)

but pete surely lather = you can't see what you're doing = bad? this is the point of new-fangled shave gels.

also soap dries out your face so = bad.

oh, and aftershave = alcohol which is painful and dries yr skin up - wtf?

toby (tsg20), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

aftershave is for drinking

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

even gels should lather out of translucency. aftershave's hurting=aftershave's working. esp. if taken internally.

I heard it was better to use cold water on your blade and face so that the stub. would be clenched by your contracting skin and more uprighted. this seems to work OK.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

(tongue strains against bottom lip)

what do you mean you can't see what ur doing! if u can see flesh instead of white you've been there already move on

aftershave sux go 4 creams, lotions etc

Destroy: Gillette Venus. Or rather, it destroys you, anyone wanna see my scars?

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a Gillette Venus scar on my knee Rosemary. It's been there months. I lknow exactly what you mean.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Gillette Venus is obv. evil, for I have scar on my ankle!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I see where you are going wrong Toby. If you can still see the lather/gel then you haven't shaved that bit properly yet. The hot water before the lather is important too - softens the beard - as does working it all in with a good shaving brush. Then mke sure you rinse the blade of the razor after every fast stroke (with the grain, not agin) in cold water. Cold water because hot water will make the blade expand and hence blunt.

Then copious cold water afterwards.

I find that a decent soap does not particularly dry my face, and I have quite oily skin anyway so face drying = good thing.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:12 (twenty-three years ago)

It's kind of pricey, but I've started using Art of Shaving products: pre-shave oil and shaving cream. The combo definitely leads to a smoother shave than when I was just using gilette cream. I've been told using a shaving brush would make things even better because the bush helps to lift the hairs away from the skin.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

brush, rather.

die9o (dhadis), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Destroy: Damn aftershave gels, goos, mousses, whatever the hell, with their "aloe" and their "Springtime fresh scent" and their "moisturizers." The only real aftershave I can find these days -- the only one that serves its real purpose of smacking you in the cheeks and waking you up in the morning with its searing facepain -- is Old Spice, and I'd sooner use bleach.

Shaving daily: Dud. It makes my skin feel weird and constantly irritated, and when I was younger it made me more prone to breaking out. I shave every other day; I don't work in an office, so I could have a floor-length beard with a flag hanging out of it and be perfectly all right.

Expensive, quality razors (like the Mach 3, etc.): Dud, just cause they cost so damn much. I can never use one more than twice, and even twice is sometimes pushing it. I have better luck using disposable Bics, a fresh razor every time I shave, than trying to squeeze a third use out of the quality blades.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Girls! Start waxing!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I intend to try shaving oil. I thought it was a bit poncey but as all gels and creams are soap-based, using them rather negates the point of my buying fancy facial washes in order not to dry out my skin. Err.. bit poncey, yeah.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I also use the Mach 3 razor with the Mach 3 turbo blades (very good - almost never get a nick), and I'm currently using Gillette shaving gel. People make fun of the way I shave, though it works fine for me. If I really need a shave, like on Mondays, I wet my face with hottish water, then put some gel in my hand and work it into the fur getting it foamy. Then, curiously (according to some, including my dad) I downshave my whole face and throat, then reapply the gel and upshave my whole face and throat. Then I take some gel in my hand unless there's still a lot on my face, and strategically place it in places that still don't feel smooth and cross-shave. If I have time I redo this last step until I can't feel anymore stubble, though I usually just eyeball it. Then I hop in the shower and use an exfoliating facial scrub then Clinique face soap (the strongest one - chock full o' alcohol!). After I shower I apply some aftershave balm, usually a Clinique product (Happy! for men these days, though I also have some Hugo Boss stuff that stings a lot more that I use when I'm feeling down on myself), though in the summer I often skip this part since my face gets a little greasier in the heat. Doubt anyone would want to use this method, though it works great for me.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

What fancy facial washes?!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I shave about every second day and I find a Mach 3 turbo blade lasts me for about 5 - 7 shaves.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh and you've got to do it every day.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Were they hidden away?

I wouldn't have thought it poncey N. - just insurance for the future.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara - I got put off waxing when living with my friend Heather. I came home one day to find her struggling to get a wax strip off the back of her leg. She asked if I could pull it. Not being a natural sadist I was a bit apprehensive about this, but gave it a yank. She screamed, we both fell over, knocking th pot of of warm wax over in the process. We both got stuck to the carpet and had to wait until another housemate came back and could get the anti-wax lotion thing and some vasaline to free us.

(I wish that wasn't a true story)

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I once tried a home wax. I mean it looks so easy in the salon, I wondered why I should continue to pay over-make-up-ed dollys to do it for me?

I found out. Ouch. OMG. Ouch. I bruised *so* badly.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh dear lord I think may wet myself, that stuck-to-the-carpet waxing story should be made into a Smack the Pony sketch!!

"After I shower I apply some aftershave balm, usually a Clinique product (Happy! for men these days, though I also have some Hugo Boss stuff that stings a lot more that I use when I'm feeling down on myself)"

Bryan, I want to sniff you....

smee (smee), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna's story is wonderfully silly.

Me: electric Braun razor. Yay.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

My aunt put a wax strip on her husband's leg to teach him a lesson. He's a very hairy man. They didn't speak for a week.

Just like the time I put chewing gum in my boyfriend's hair for a *joke*...

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

It was actually quite funny, the two of us sitting there covered in wax and carpet fluff giggling, with occassional shrieks as we tried to free ourselves. We heard the front door go and had to start shouting 'heeelp' in a really pitiful way. Flatmate came down and cried with laughter for ages before doing anything to help. Can't blame her really.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

(I read 'gels' in RJG's last post as a posh pronunciation of 'girls'.)

(Also: Lara's related to The Hairy Man!)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Anna's story sounds hot.

My mother gave me a razor sharpener for Christmas and it WORKS. It was designed for disposable razors but it works on my Sensor. Don't know about Mach. It probably costs like $5, it's just a piece of plastic that looks like a little coffin for a razor with a slot down the middle and some black-mirror-glass thing in the bottom that does the sharpening; stroke 10-15 times under cold running water and hey presto it is SHARP!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gots to get me one of them! smee - I dare you to come to Winnipeg to sniff me. It's cold as a MOTHERFUCKER all over the Canadian prairies right now. Increases the need for the balms.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

After using yr razor, wash and dry the razor well and put tea tree oil (or any oil really, but tea tree oil is antiseptic) on the blades. This protects the blades from rust or other corrosion that they get simply from being in your humid bathroom and makes them last longer and also makes them less likely to re-introduce bacteria into your skin.

I've heard good things about pre-shaving oil but have no experience.

Burt's Bees sells a great shaving mug and brush and a great-smelling bay rum soap that fits in the bottom of the mug.

My BF is part German and part middle Eastern, and he got stuck with fair sensitive skin but coarse curly facial hair. He uses a Mach 3 (as do I when I can be arsed to shave) and gillette shaving gel, which I hate, so I bought him Kiehl's alcohol-free aftershave and close shavers white eagle, both of which he used up. Then I got him two Philosophy Common Man, which he likes, and Razor Sharp, which he says shaves too close and so I use it and like it.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Also try this for ouchy bump issues.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 18:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I have super thin facial hair so usually get away with shaving every 3 or 4 days... I always shave after a shower. I used to do it the other way around until someone told me to shower first and I'll never go back... it's so much easier and smoother since my face is all wet and warm. Gillette Sensor blades with a razor I got for free in high school (probably the smartest marketing thing anyone ever did was Gillette mailing free razors to every graduating senior). I just got this, uh, L'Occiadent or whatever aftershave cream for xmas that's wonderful. I occasionally miss spots or nick myself, usually when I'm not being careful.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I use a Braun electric, and I can cut myself with that. I always end up sore, and use lots of baby lotion instead of manly aftershave, because the latter hurts. I have extraordinarily sensitive skin.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Aaron how the FUCK did they figure out our birthdays?? i still can't understand the cross-marketing involved

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Did they mail them out on our birthdays??? God, I think you're right. I think our high schools had something to do with it. I wonder if they still do that?

It's a bit gross now that I think that my razor is, eh, 8 years old! Eww... maybe it's time to buy a new one?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Destroy: Gillette Venus. Or rather, it destroys you, anyone wanna see my scars?

You're kidding. The Venus is the only blade I can use. It's the only one that 1: Doesn't give me a rash; and 2: Shaves close enough so that I only have to shave once a day.

And no scars, yet.

(I've tried waxing. Doesn't work on me, for some reason.)

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo (cindigo), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:24 (twenty-three years ago)

That's funny as I found I needed to shave less with other razors than the Venus. Plus the whole removing a two inch piece of skin business.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:46 (twenty-three years ago)

High schools giving out personal information to private companies doesn't sound likely. At the time I though it was a conspiracy of the Selective Service, that the U.S. Army was in cahoots with Gillette.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 20:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah... the Army was VERY interested in my whereabouts around the time of high school. I remember Sgt. Gardner used to call my house every few weeks... hmmmm... I wonder if my mom gave him my info. The plot thickens!

Shaving oil, with shaving gel over the top of it. Total overkill, and still makes my face itch like fuck, but better than just using one of them. Oh, and with the grain = not very close at all, against the grain = facial itching HELL.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

whoah, yeah. i've tried shaving against the grain (up) on my neck a few times and it was a nightmare. i actually ~only~ shave with the grain, period. am i doing it wrong? also, i don't fuck with y'alls fancy stuff, just a mach3 and a can of walgreens w/e foam

BIG MUFFIN (gbx), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)

Goths in Home & Away in my lifetime (darraghmac), Monday, 29 November 2010 17:47 (fifteen years ago)

Today's shave was much better, and it's all about the blade. I'd been using the Shark blades that came with the razor, and though I understand that they're not terrible blades overall, I should know better than to use the accessories that "come-with." (See: iPhone earphones.) The Merkur Super Platinum blades that I got in the mail this morning did an astoundingly better job, and I doubt that I have gained that much skill with the razor in two days. I hear that Derby is the gold standard, but I'm totally good with these for a while. At any rate, no more Shark.

Yeah, I really wanted to do the whole fancy shaving w/ brush & safety razor thing. ordered some nice stuff and straight butchered my neck the first two times I tried it, then went right back to the Mach 3. I hate how wasteful and expensive the Mach 3 stuff is, so I'm psyching myself to try again soon. Going to invest in some nicer razors this time around.

rockapads, Monday, 11 July 2011 17:16 (fourteen years ago)

Proraso shaving creams are excellent but absurdly expensive in London.

модный хипстер (ShariVari), Monday, 11 July 2011 17:17 (fourteen years ago)

ordered some nice stuff and straight butchered my neck the first two times I tried it, then went right back to the Mach 3.

I mean I got a lot better at it over time, but it's been a couple of years and I STILL give myself a nasty slice every few weeks or so. People say "slow down," which I do, but it's the one shave or even one split second during a shave that you don't slow down that always creates the problem, and that's usually the time when you're on your way to a job interview or getting ready to go to a nice dinner. And the gravity of the mistake with an old fashioned razor is just way worse than with a newfangled razor. I do hate the expense of the cartridges, especially since I already have my chrome safety and the blades are so cheap -- maybe I'll just try to always shave on the lowest guard setting from now on. Can anyone recommend a good product for nicks?

relentlessly googling hipster (Hurting 2), Monday, 11 July 2011 17:22 (fourteen years ago)

You can find a styptic pencil at most pharmacies and department stores next to the shaving supplies. They run about $2 and last forever. Very good for small nicks.

I mentioned this on a different thread, but re: Mach 3 and beyond, it helps to a) fully dry the blade after use and b) sharpen it on your arm like a leather strap (basically, rub it across your arm in a reverse-shaving motion, with the blades rather than against them). I've literally gotten months of use out of a single cartridge where once I needed to change out every week and a half or so.
