The Scene

What makes a good local scene? I guess I'm mainly thinking in terms of music, but also more generally some kind of strong/vital arts community...can such a thing really exist or is it a romantic ideal? What's required to encourage such a thing?

Having only one decent pub within a five mile radius helps.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

And a friend who wears an interesting hat.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Somewhere everybody knows your name. And people drink and tell jokes. Like Cheers.

TS "The Scene" vs "The Lifestyle" hur hur hurgh

Pashmina (Pashmina), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

No local band egos. I live in a tiny market town in Lancashire, with an inner city overspill newtown up the road. When I was 18 and grunging it up around here, there was 50% of a good scene. About half the bands around, of very disparate styles and ages, were really helpful to each other and the other half were unbelievably up their own arses for what they were.

I remember playing with two such bands at a local labour club. When they arrived they couldn't believe we were on last, so they both proceeded to just arse around on stage and make as hideous a noise as they could until the promoter pulled the plug on them. Then they tried to steal our bass amp. What the fuck? YOU ARE PLAYING AT SKELMERSDALE LABOUR CLUB YOU EGOTISTICAL WANKERS.

The bands that were co-operative were great, we traded a lot of gigs and had some great times. The biggest help in creating a scene is having lots of bands around that don't really know each other. It doubles the crowds when two bands do a gig together.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

This is still my favourite thing ever on FT

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Geeta is on the money, leaving out only "lack of anything better to do" and/or "one or two institions of higher education".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 22 January 2003 15:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Affordable Rehearsal Space

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 23 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 23 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 23 January 2003 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone else see 24 Hour Party People? What's the Manchester Scene like now?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

See, I live in a midsized city with several colleges, including one mainly arts college. Cheap rents. Several venues. Yet there is no scene, as far as I can tell (maybe they're hiding from me). It is true that there are no practice spaces.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

The scene is so obviously between Clark and Hilldale.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I firmly believe the music & remaining arts scene (dance, film, painting, photography, etc.) are actually quite intertwined, and cooperation between each medium of the scene.

Put laptop musos in the corner at your gallery's opening. Hire a jazz quartet to provide backing for your photo show. If you're a dance troupe, rather than perform to a tape/CD, perform to live music. If you're a local music freak, make a movie about your favorite local bands. And zines...zines are KEY.

Cross-pollination, in my humble opinion, is the difference between a-town-full-of-musos-and-artists and an honest-to-goodness SCENE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:34 (twenty-three years ago)

D'oh!

That first sentence was supposed to read:

"...cooperation between each medium of the scene is what makes 'A SCENE'."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It's actually between DC and uh...Chapel Hill?

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

nickalicious is OTM. a good local independent/college radio station helps a lot, too.

geeta, Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

true, but i played a gig in an art gallery about a month ago and it was (i think) the least enjoyable i've played yet. being around "The Visual Art Scene" made me ill. a bunch of lame, lame people who I couldn't relate to on any level.

i like playing for rock people because i'm a rock guy. i appreciate all forms of art, but not necessarily the people that turn up to support them.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 23 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

3. Scene Girls 3 up, 11 down
buy scene girls mugs, tshirts and magnets
Some ppl sayy dat scene people are emo but most arent cozz if ur emo then ur just a person who thinks there life aint worth living.. But i thought that and i chose scene cozz u dont have to act depressed "all the time" and u can wear anything rlly. If ur scene u can wear any colours bright and all but u GOTTAA make sure u know exactly wat hair u want if u just go in and pick one then it might make u look like a fag so pick the right hair. A site that helped me quite a bit to pick hair and find rllyyy rllyyy cute backrounds and stuff its >> www.luvemo.com Its totally sex (meaning kewl in scene talk) So if ur life sux but u just cant always be totally depressed and down then choose scene and the few best things bout scene >> the hair,,,,the clothes,,,,the cuteness,,, and still being able to be happy!!
Scene Girls Examples for words>>> lol=lawll or like on words add letters like this >>rlly,,rllyy its the scene and if ur new to scene then i suggest u find a site like dis and talk and search around a lil

Yes, "Scene" has been a thing for at least a year or two. I just thought that those girls I used to see at electro nights in 2006 all had kid sisters or something, and they and their friends tried to copy the look.

- Not a lot of people will understand the difference between "emo" and "scene" make sure they KNOW that you're scene but don't spend hours explaining the difference. NEVER EVER say, "I'm not emo, I'm scene." Remember, 'scene' is cool, 'emo' was a type of music that the media and idiodic MySpace junkies stereotyped and made into a stupid fad.
- Don't be too random, because then you will just be called plain annoying.

what, because you aren't interested in how 15 year olds dress?

mh, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 01:04 (fifteen years ago)

Saying that something is "so Vogue", as you could be describing someone's outfit, is a nice compliment, as Vogue is a popular fashion magazine. Some other things scene kids say are "betch", "you are the sex", "that's golden", "you're too cute STFU", or "OMG" (prounoced OH-EM-GEE). Don't use irritating abbreviations in person. Saying "lol"or "lawl" is acceptable, but "rofl" and "lmao" are best left to typing conversations. Use new terms. However, don't say what everyone else around you is saying. If you need some inspiration, try Urban Dictionary, or even coining up your own word. Originality puts you on the 'scene map' for being a potential scene queen or king. If you do choose to make up your own word, make sure that it's original, makes sense, and sounds good.
