TS: Todd Haynes v. Art Linkletter

The generally despicable Art Linkletter was on Larry King today, and there was a clip from Kids Say the Darndest Things where little 8-year-old Todd Haynes (he of Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, Velvet Goldmine, Far from Heaven, etc.) is telling Art about his mommy and daddy.

Just wanted to share that with you. Feel free to explore your thoughts and deep feelings about Art Linkletter, Todd Haynes, or both.

He may have been younger than 8, actually.

This should really be on the non-canonical things learned at school thread, but third-grade teacher had this thing about telling us that Art Linkletter's daughter took LSD and jumped off a balcony, to stop a bunch of eight year olds from doing same. Like we'd know where to get LSD.

It's true, it inspired John Waters to make the Diane Linkletter Story!

She just wanted to do her own thing in her own time. I know the building she jumped from , it's a huge modern 60s apartment complex just off the Sunset Strip.

I hated that show when I was a kid, Art always seemed pretty creepy.

I like the idea of young Todd Haynes taking notes for a future poststructuralist-inspired feature film on Art Linkletter, while he's mouthing such things as, "My mommy and daddy are married because they sleep in the same bed" as Art feigns astonishment for the camera.

This is like that photo of Bill Clinton and JFK! But BETTER.

four years pass...

RIP the son of Art who inspired whole 'Kids Say' thing. I didn't realize Art was still alive!
