The most contemptible TV show ever?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 23 January 2003 09:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably. The two actors hated each other in real life apparently.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Thursday, 23 January 2003 09:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah but who's naughtier, them or Daddy?

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I really did think erik estrada [CHiPs] was the father of erik-michael estrada [o-town].

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Shouldn't that be on huge confession thread?

smee (smee), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

________

we need cookie to come and tell us the story about erik's dogs.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to think CHiPs was very good, second only to CHOPPER SQUAD.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 23 January 2003 10:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Biker chip.

RJG - you have PF stuff (not Puffenstuff) that I covet. I want to arrange a trade - is the above address OK to send a mail to?

Mooro (Mooro), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 23 January 2003 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Ed Wood did a pilot for a western in ’61 (I think), that made CHiPs look positively brilliant. I saw it last month (didn’t know that he had done one prior to that) and it was worse than Plan 9.

Does that count if it was never really a series?

Thinking of CHiPs reminds me of what television is missing today— Roller Disco!

No One (SiggyBaby), Thursday, 23 January 2003 14:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to love CHiPs. Whenever I see a cop on a motorbike I want to hum the theme song really loud. LA sure did have a lot of crazy traffic problems though (how many times can a car/truck/trailer lose its brakes up in the hills?).

This summation on Wikipedia is total lulz:

A Typical "CHiPs" Episode

"CHiPs" episodes were usually a combination of light comedy and melodrama. A typical episode would start with Ponch and Jon being assigned to patrol an interesting beat, such as Malibu or the Sunset Strip. In a staff briefing, Sgt. Getraer would warn CHiPs to be on the lookout for a criminal operation, such as people staging accidents as part of an insurance scheme or punk rockers breaking into cars. A few interesting, unrelated vignettes might transpire during the course of "routine" traffic stops. A light-hearted subplot would also be included, such as Harlan trying to hide a stray dog from Getraer. A more serious theme, such as Ponch trying to keep a kid from his old neighborhood out of a life of crime, might also be included. After a few failed attempts to apprehend the gang that had been menacing L.A.'s freeways, the episode would invariably culminate in Ponch and Jon leading a chase of the suspects (often assisted by other members of the division), climaxing with a spectacular series of stunt car crashes. The show then typically featured a dénouement of Ponch and Jon participating in a new activity (such as jet skiing or skydiving), designed to showcase the pair's glamorous Southern California lifestyle. Often, Ponch would attempt to impress a woman he had met during the episode with his athletic prowess, only to fall and provide Jon, Getraer and others with a hearty laugh.

Classic for this episode: http://www.chips-tv.com/Guide/Episode/516.shtml

Episode Guide: Season 5: Battle of the Bands
516 - Battle of the Bands
Original Airdate: 31-Jan-1982

Plot: After slashing some tires, some punks break into the van of the band "Snow Pink". After stealing guitars, they then set the brakes loose on the van and let it roll down the hill. Ponch and Jon chase the punks but they manage to get away. Back at Central, Jon, Getraer, and Harlan give Ponch some ribbing about his singing. Later, they head out to talk to Snow Pink herself. They return a sliced-up microphone but inform her they haven't found her guitars yet. At her club, Duke is screening tapes. He invites the band "Pain" to be in the Battle of the Bands. We soon find out that "Pain" is the punks' band! Later, at Central, Grossie slam dances against the lockers and tells the history of slam dancing. A classic "CHiPs" moment! Shortly thereafter, Ponch and Jon go visit "Pain". Just before they're about to go inside, one of the band members throws a bass guitar off the roof and onto a car causing a multiple-vehicle accident. After making sure a man's okay, they chase the punks who escape on their motorcycles. The punks climb a barb-wire fence and escape. After Ponch leaves to get ready for his performance, Jon goes to try to talk Duke into more security. When Jon and Ponch meet up again, Ponch admits he's happy being a CHP and doesn't want to give it up. That night, at the Battle of the Bands, "Pain" rips up the bathroom while "Snow Pink" performs. Soon enough, "Pain" begins disrupting the audience. When Duke tries to kick them out, they threaten him with a knife. After the commercial, "Pain" performs. Punks in the audience start slam dancing as Snow Pink notices her guitar being used by a member of "Pain". Since "Pain" locked everyone out, Jon breaks a window to get in. He finds Duke tied up in a closet. Jon enters the concert hall and "Pain" runs off as a riot starts. Police officers get the crowd under control with Jon's vocal help. As the leader of "Pain" tries to escape, Ponch rides up causing the punk to spill. The punk threatens to blow them both up by holding a lighter near leaking gas. Ponch blows out the flame and saves the day. Back inside, Ponch performs "Celebration" in front of Grossie, Turner, Baricza, Harlan, Jon, Getraer, and Bonnie. When he finishes, the winner of the Battle of the Bands is announced as "Snow Pink".

Great Quote: "Oh Ponch! You were terrific last night!" -Bonnie to Ponch (regarding his singing)
Great Scene: Ponch singing "Celebration"

Guest Stars: Susan Richardson (as Snow Pink), Bill Forsythe (aka "William Forsythe" as Trasher), Doug McClure (from Out of this World as Duke), Daniel Davies (as Potato Head), James Margolin (as Fido), Lori Street (as Surfer Girl), David Boyle (as Father), Shepherd (as Snow's Band), and Jeff Harlan (as Disc Jockey)
Written by: Larry Mollin
Directed by: Barry Crane

Fun Fact:
This episode has original music and Erik Estrada singing "Celebration"!

Mistakes:
-The punks open Snow Pink's van by wrapping a chain around the door handle. That's a strange technique!
-Before the van jumps onto the beach the volleyball players run. How could they be sure the van was going to jump onto the beach?
-Ponch and Jon must be psychic. Without seeing the punks set the van in motion down the hill, they chase them.
-When the guitar causes an accident, there's nobody in the crashing white car.
-After checking one person at that accident, Ponch and Jon leave. They ignore everyone else.

I was thinking about this show a few weeks ago. I remember this episode where they're at a petrol station. Ponch washes his face in water from an outside tap, and goes temporarily blind. Later Jon visits him in the hospital, and Ponch starts talking excitedly about a nurse who "gives a mean sponge bath". Of course 6/7 year old me didn't understand at all why anyone would be excited about receiving a sponge bath...

In February 1999, founded the UC HUB Group, Inc. UC HUB delivers solutions for communications needs, including connectivity, content, and commerce. UC HUB's vision of an interconnected Digital Community, where all can benefit from the enhanced quality of life offered by the applications, products, and services available to each digital citizen, drives the company towards the future and influences all of the company's corporate decisions. This successful company has its corporative offices in Las Vegas.

Where Is He Now: In 2002 Larry was invited by the Department of Commerce in Washington D.C. to sit on the emerging technology board.

Larry still enjoys studying international military strategists, working with new compression algorithms, collecting French Burgundy wines or its counterpart, California Pinot Noirs, and staying up with the technology of re-configurable computers and field programmable gate arrays. He is articulate, intelligent and completely candid in his interviews, and a fascinating and rich subject for anyone interested in a deeper conversation about philosophy, television history, Vietnam, manhood, ethics, or simply the story of a very introspective, sensitive and gracious leader who has refused to let fame or celebrity get in the way of hard work, discipline, integrity and success.

Larry spends most of his time in a ranch in San Fernando Valley, California. From there he runs his company UC HUB Group, Inc. (their corporative offices are in Las Vegas) and enjoys the company of her wife and sons.Website: www.uchub.net

Larry still enjoys studying international military strategists

Not their work, just the strategists.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 October 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

Wait hold on:

collecting French Burgundy wines or its counterpart, California Pinot Noirs

Is this actually correct or is it, as I suspect, a classic case of wishing it was?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 8 October 2010 16:27 (fifteen years ago)

And would a UK Conservative Party booze up notice the difference?
