I want a history book that will give me a brief but authoritative overview of the entire history of the world, ie; something I can look in to see what 12th century China/Egypt/Asia were like, what happened between the Greeks and the middle ages in England/Scandinavia, that covers indiginous cultures pre-colonialism all over the world, and gives me an idea as to the culture and philosophy and social structres of all these things. Basically, I want a brief history of man that helps explain how we got to here.

Does such a book exist? Or am I gonna hev to get lots of seperate books?

I read one called MILLENNIUM by Felipe Alfresco-Armistice or something. You might need another book as well, but nevertheless in spite of this it's good regardless.

This sort of information is generally available in less-than-detailed "timeline" charts.

For an excellent book that covers some of this subject matter, but from one pace to the side of one's expectations, find a copy of Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond. This book attempts to explain the fundamental reasons why people are equally intelligent everywhere, yet certain cultures developed high technology while others did not. In making his argument, he gathers much of the information you are asking for.

GG&S seconded. It's not a reference book like you want, but it's really great.

If you're interested in a history of the last 500 years in Western Civ, I HIGHLY recommend this... I'm about 1/3 of the way thru and am enjoying every page.
