Bette Bette Bette

Vic (Vic), Friday, 24 January 2003 03:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Theda Bara and Ava Gardner.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 24 January 2003 04:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Marion Davies is so underrated it's not even funny. (There are historical reasons for this.)

Douglas (Douglas), Friday, 24 January 2003 04:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Clara Bow, Buster Keaton, Gloria Swanson

Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow = see them in WIFE VS. SECRETARY

Vic (Vic), Friday, 24 January 2003 04:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh, all good choices. Sometimes I think I should stop watching films made after 1975 or so. But then I would miss the genius which Darkness Falls is sure to be.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 24 January 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah sometimes I just want to watch films from before 1960 or something, but then how can I watch, like, porn ?

Ooh, another one - Olivia de Havilland (Bette's bes friend!)

Vic (Vic), Friday, 24 January 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Thank you Mr. Diamond!

Also - Janet & Vivian Leigh - the former for chops & star quality, the latter for looking divine in that curtain. Also also - Joan Fontaine.

Note: I base three of the 4 choices in this post on their work in Alfred Hitchcock movies. Stone me if you must.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 24 January 2003 06:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Peter Lorre.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 24 January 2003 09:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Buster Keaton

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Keaton, Cary Grant, Stan Laurel, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart. Gloria Grahame, Barbara Stanwyck, Katherine Hepburn.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I've gone on at far too much length about Peter O'Toole, A & K Hepburn to add anything useful. So other names:

All About Eve, which often seems like the best film ever (I don't really seek out the actors in it outside of it, excepting George Sanders). Kay Kendall. Gene Tierney. Tallulah Bankhead. Coral Browne. Cary Grant (my late friend Ashley had his autograph from one night when he was sitting next to their family at Chasen's). Vincent Price. Anyone in a Powell/Pressburger film ever (the only time I've ever been gobsmacked in front of a film bod is when Andrew McDonald, who produced Trainspotting etc, told me he was Emeric Pressburger's grandson). Kim Novak in Bell, Book and Candle. The film Topper (but not the sequels). The film of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit, featuring pre-1950 Rex Harrison (also ace on the whole) fashioning comedy misogynist persona (who sounds quite a bit like Nick when acting a hissy fit). DIRK BOGARDE (but then history goes along and in come the Angry Young RADA class of '55 to balance me out with Northern/Celtic intellectual left-leaning stud-muffins).

This just looks like every film I ever watched in the summer on PBS until I was 15, nursing a manuscript and procrastinating yard work.

Sylia Bataille was married to Georges Bataille, and later to Jacques Lacan. I find that heartbreaking.

Carole Lombard in My Man Godfrey is the greatest thing in the universe

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 26 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Carole Lombard is so naughty. I just saw her in To Be or Not to Be and she was wearing the most scandalous dress. The film was rather scandalous itself.
