Oh my god I'm shocked, pleased, frightened and truth be told, a little jealous!!!

smee (smee), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:38 (twenty-three years ago)

If it woznt you wot dun it then that's cool. If it woz you wot dun it than that's cooler.

Babies are great. All my friends with babies are very cool.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm I have no sperms, it weren't me.

smee (smee), Friday, 24 January 2003 10:46 (twenty-three years ago)

There'll come a time when you can!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

When I can produce sperms? Ewww no thank you! My fiance can handle that side of things, only once we are married of course.....

smee (smee), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:57 (twenty-three years ago)

DO I get to be an uncle?

Graham (graham), Friday, 24 January 2003 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't worry. I'm sure your friend will get better.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham, picture this scene:
Me - You know that internet chatroom type place wot made me famous?
Best Mate – Uh-huh
Me - Well there’s this bloke on it who is really nice and he’d like to be your babies uncle, is that OK?
Best Mate…….I’ll leave her response up to your imagination!

smee (smee), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Better that than an offer to be the baby-daddy, which by this time would be a little too late anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray for smee's best friend!

My childhood best friend is expecting her second child. That makes me feel quite old.

rosemary (rosemary), Friday, 24 January 2003 16:47 (twenty-three years ago)

congrats to your best friend smee!

donna (donna), Friday, 24 January 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, congrats!

A close friend of mine is preggo - well, his wife is preggo - but it's all still such a shock. Don't think I'll be able to completely grasp this until I see the baby. Unfortunately, think this may be the case for the baby's daddy too.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, but what about your friend? (Haha I MADE A BABY DADDY JOKE)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha.

No, it's his.
Shotgun wedding and all.

Well, in any case, we might be able to tell when it's born??

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:51 (twenty-three years ago)

One of the coolest things about being a single-father is that I get to use the term "baby's-momma" with a totally straight face.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:52 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Aww, I just found this again - it's wee Rose's first b'day at the weekend...how time flies....;0)

smee (smee), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

What's a good gift for a pregnant friend? (p.s. not baby gifts, i'm thinking like really great food or something that helps her legs feel cool...probably not a gift certificate either because they already gave me one for Christmas and I don't want to do the whole pricing thing)

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 19 December 2008 06:11 (seventeen years ago)

I love the idea of really great food.

During my first pregnancy, I also had this weird wedge-shaped pillow that I stuck under my belly as it grew. It was so simple, but I loved it!

Another gift I received was during early pregnancy; I was extremely nauseous and vomiting a lot... having trouble keeping food down. To distract me, a friend gave me three of Gavin Edwards' books of misheard song lyrics. I laughed and laughed at them. (This was 10 years ago - and I still enjoy those books!)

Sara R-C, Friday, 19 December 2008 06:19 (seventeen years ago)

I love the song book idea! I guess it varies from person to person, but are there particular foods that you tend to crave? Sweets?

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 19 December 2008 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks, by the way, for the response!

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Friday, 19 December 2008 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

i don't buy the whole craving thing when it comes to pregnancy. that said, i craved junk food. oh my did i balloon. :-(

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 19 December 2008 08:29 (seventeen years ago)

how about a gift certificate for three homecooked dinners delivered to her door after she has the little person?

Tracer Hand, Friday, 19 December 2008 10:16 (seventeen years ago)

This guy is a favorite in our household.

Manchego Bay (G00blar), Friday, 19 December 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

xpost, Tracer OTM, when friends had a baby recently, I figured they'd be inundated with baby things from all and sundry, and that the best thing I could give them would be time to do other stuff rather than have to cook.

ailsa, Friday, 19 December 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

bestest gift would be 8 hour sleep. please YSI me as well cause i haven't had 8 hour sleep for the past 15 months. LE SIGH

Nathalie (stevienixed), Friday, 19 December 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

nath, it's funny that you craved junk food. I craved Kentucky Fried Chicken (extra crispy) with my first and hamburgers with my second. So really, I'm no help whatsoever here for anyone.

But I do kind of think meals after the baby comes is a brilliant idea, and nath is right about the sleep thing, too. (If you want to give a new parent the gift of sleep, they will love you forever, but it might be tricky.)

Sara R-C, Friday, 19 December 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

a friend of mine X has in turn, a friend Y who's just had twins. X offered Y the keys to her apartment, said she's about to go on vacation to florida and that Y should come over, BY HERSELF, whenever she wants. Y actually cried tears of joy.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 19 December 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

Tracer, I should have handed keys to you and the Mrs for this very reason. How are things going?

Meat ROFL (suzy), Friday, 19 December 2008 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

it's actually going fine so far but i think we're still kind of high on euphoria

so glad you got tickets in the end!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 19 December 2008 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

Magz and Jim's kid is also a well-behaved little boy.

Meat ROFL (suzy), Friday, 19 December 2008 19:26 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

So, I just found out that two of my really good friends' wives are pregnant, each about the same time along (12 weeks)! They both seem really stoked.

I understand that the 12 weeks is conventionally the time during which the pregnancy is most uncertain, and you don't want to make an announcement before things look a little less potentially complicated. But I also think that it gives the guy time to get his head straight before telling any of his friends. I hung out with one of the guys who told me right after he found out about 10 weeks ago, and he seemed REALLY out of sorts and all just worked up about shit. He was MUCH happier about things when I spoke to him 10 min ago.

Odds that my wife and I have a conversation about this tonight : HIGH.
Odds that I get high during or immediately after that conversation : HIGHER.

So you...don't want kids, and your friend pretty much didn't either, but now that his wife is having one, he's getting used to the idea? And you see your doom, I mean, future in this? Or did I misread something?

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Friday, 15 January 2010 22:24 (sixteen years ago)

this year has brought a serious rash of babies. three born in the first three months, two more due in the summer. surely there are some more being conceived as we speak. (i'm almost 35 btw, so this is not a surprise)

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 15 January 2010 22:27 (sixteen years ago)

i can't believe the world can expect seven babies this year!

everybody's into weirdness right now (gbx), Friday, 15 January 2010 22:28 (sixteen years ago)

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Friday, 15 January 2010 22:29 (sixteen years ago)

Make sure you don't give them the same name.

What I'm thinking is so delicate
If I breathe, you know, I'm going to lose it
It's just a drop in the biggest ocean I know I've ever seen
And in a moment it's big enough to drown the whole world
This is my present to the world
And I want you to take it
This is my present to the world
Take it from me, please, please take it from me

All I know is I don't know it
It's raining babies from the sky down on me
Tiny drops on my windshield
And in a second it's raining, raining all over the whole world

WOW. Entirely incorrect. Like, you couldn't be more incorrect.

Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Friday, 15 January 2010 22:59 (sixteen years ago)

I'm delighted to be wrong, cos it seemed kind of jerky and I always liked you before!! I am not grokking the "head straight" thing and your friend being unhappy originally, though.

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Friday, 15 January 2010 23:02 (sixteen years ago)

Speaking as someone whose sister didn't want her first child until after he was born, it's not exclusively a male phenomenon. O_o

WHY DON'T YOU JUST LICK THE BUS DIRECTLY (Laurel), Friday, 15 January 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)

(i'm almost 35 btw, so this is not a surprise)

Yeah, I know three women, all of whom 34 or 35, who had babies last June alone.

Hoisin Murphy (jaymc), Friday, 15 January 2010 23:08 (sixteen years ago)

"head straight" = still freaked out about becoming a dad and all the uncertainty contained therein(he's a solid, respectable dude who REALLY takes care of his biz), but able to talk about it without seeming totally overwhelmed. Whereas, when I saw him a few months ago he was CLEARLY overwhelmed by something.

As to my conversation, no doom. Just - there will be the inevitable inventory of "what we need to get in order before we can have kids", after which I will need to decompress.

I apologize for perceived jerkiness. Having kids be stressful.

Clerk all KNOWIN (B.L.A.M.), Friday, 15 January 2010 23:10 (sixteen years ago)

Make sure you don't give them the same name.

i had two friends and coworkers whose wives were both pregnant the same time, and they kept sort of quiet about the names -- which is generally i think a good idea except when you decide to name your daughter olivia and your friend/coworker decides to name his daughter anna olivia. (this was when i first realized all these -a names were upon us.) there was actually a little irritation on both sides, from the wives too. but i guess they got over it. olivias for everyone.

hellzapoppa (tipsy mothra), Friday, 15 January 2010 23:15 (sixteen years ago)

Huzzah, Olivias!
