So, I finally paid of my student loan today, so why don't I feel smug and pleased? (apart from the fact that I've discovered creidt cards since then..)

Never been in debt. This is the only part of being in debt that appealed to me so its good to see that its no grebt shakes.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

perhaps it's got something to do with the fact that the remaining balance was only 19p!

How wonderful would it be to pay of all debts (apart from Mortgage, though that would be great too) and be beholden to no-one? I must start budgeting better, I hate it.

Is our generation much less money concious than our parents? My parents would have been horified to have been in debt at my stage in life, unmarried, without kids.

Vicky (Vicky), Friday, 24 January 2003 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine too. My dad has always taught me about debt being terrible, and it's really worked. What is less easy to deal with is thinking of savings in the same way - when you're unemployed for a long time, and the cash is sitting in your bank account...

I learnt too late that debt is a very bad thing.

Ed (dali), Friday, 24 January 2003 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I am resigned to the fact that I will be in debt for the rest of my life...

smee (smee), Friday, 24 January 2003 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

No one will give me credit cards, but I do have a huge (and unnecessary) overdraft and student loan.

How did you get through university Pete?

Graham (graham), Friday, 24 January 2003 12:22 (twenty-three years ago)

debt seems unavoidable these days if you want to go anywhere or doing anything with yerself, unless yer a trustafarian.

you don't want to know my l-school debt -- practically like a mortgage.

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 24 January 2003 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Pay off all the money then what? You throw £20 or £100 at at a street urchin; you go that bit wee further and give £80 to the prettiest prostitute you found after a five mile walk just for a chat. Then you get a cab to the very most expensive hotel you can find, to be refused service in that one, referred to another only to be holed up in some suite! With two bathrooms, a mini-bar, some utterly dire and non-erotic porno channel... all this making one wish to go out, running naked into the street... take me to a police station, a hospital!
money gets you into weird places

Was a pretty cheap University, and back then we had grants don't you know (I managed on two grand a year happily) and work in the summer too.

I am so afeard of debt I am not sure if I could go to University now. Which in retrospect would probably be a good thing.

Dropped by the landlord's house recently w/money. He says, "Got my phone message did you?" I say, "No, what message was that?" He looked visibly embarrassed and said "Oh never mind, there's one on your machine from me, just erase it, don't worry about it." When I play it back later it says "Where the hell is my fucking money dammit, I'm not going to wait much longer, I'd like to know what the fuck is going on!" I love making ppl feel like jerks

I settled a 20 euro debt to my college for not having my student ID in an exam today. I have mixed feelings - glad to get it out of the way, irritated that i don't have much money till i get my wages on thurs. i haven't been working many hours the last few weeks cos of the exams, so 20 euro is a lot of money at the mo. Pah!

Apart from student loan (£14000), I've got £6000 of credit card debts and overdraft. I've also got £600 of bills (electricity, gas, phone, water) that have to be paid immediately.

My current income = the dole.

I will never settle my debts.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Friday, 24 January 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i tend to forget about my student loan debts (which are prob about £8000) and assume i have no debts.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 24 January 2003 12:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Student loan almost gone, credit card almost gone, overdraft almost gone - probably a total debt of about a grand now, which should vanish in March.

Thanks to a combination of thinking things through, a large amount of savings, the move and a bit of parental help, bless their hearts, I have recently 86d a *huge* amount of debt that I was only paying off slowly. Sad thing was I was actually in a similar situation before and got it settled, but then slipped back into it again -- these debts were actually from five years ago or so, and since then I've done my best (and mostly succeeded) in not using my credit cards, so I'm primed to stay that way. There's still a much smaller amount left to deal with, but I'll probably have done with that sometime within the next few months. Rah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

In the past I've almost never carried over credit card debt into subsequent months (and if it weren't for these damn car repairs, I probably still would have been able to pay the bills in full). Debt and credit have their uses when you need to pay for something that's expensive and worth the cost. That said, one of the happiest days of my life was when I paid off my student loan. It does feel good to know that you can meet your obligations.

Debt should be treated with the same respect you'd give to a pet tiger.

Aimless, Friday, 24 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

And fed as regularly?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:26 (twenty-three years ago)
