In what year did you consume the most stupid amounts of alcohol?

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

2000/01 were both extraordinarily stupid.

For me it's probably 1989. Was a student, so no work to get in the way. Spent part of the year in America and part of that under 21, but fake ID seemed to do the trick. But in the last three months of the year, back in England, the drinking reached a level that could not have been maintained without liver problems. I'm not exaggerating by saying that I didn't go a single day in 3 months without drinking the equivalent of at least 6 pints. Usually quite a bit more. Lager, bitter, red wine, whisky and Thunderbird were my main drinks, with the odd cocktail if I was feeling flush.

i'd say 2001 when i started hanging around with louts

minna (minna), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you now lout free?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:54 (twenty-three years ago)

2002 probably. Unemployment and splitting up with gf made me unhappy, so I drank cos I didn't have the willpower not to. Splitting up with gf also made me go out more often. I didn't really drink to huge excess or anything, but just extremely regularly.

However, the academic year 1883-4, when I was living in Italy, the vast cost of booze in clubs compared to the supermarket meant that us poor studes drank before we went out. Two bottles of wine each. The thought makes me reel.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

no :(

i have however given up keeping up with their drinking patterns!

minna (minna), Friday, 24 January 2003 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a worry with this sort of stuff that you can end up glorifying drinking (and re-reading my post above I'm probably guilty) so I should point out that later years may have shown less drinking in terms of volume, but it became slightly more, if not desperate, then certainly joyless.

Didn't think I'd ever become a moderate drinker but I'm happy that it's now the case.

I like to think of Mark C in the academic year 1883/4, before the world was changed irrevocably.

I wish I could see pictures of Mark C in the academic year 1883/4.

He's already been on the WINE! He can hardly stand! And that syrup!

Tim (Tim), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I boozed heroically in 96/7, due to a) cheapness of bitter at university and b) desperate urge to keep up with the boys.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

1990 (second year in college) or 1999 (first year in Germany). I probably consumed more in 1999 as I had learned to hold my liquor by then.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 24 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

1998. I was working in a brewpub, and after work could get free beer! There was also a special on certain days where you'd get a free pint glass with every stout you drank, and I wanted to get some kitchen stuff for my new apartment...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 24 January 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

1978, the first year when I worked full time for a while, then went to university the first time. I drank a lot. I decided eventually (like in November) that I didn't like being drunk, and haven't been since.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

2002, I'm gonna stay rockin forever! Yeah I took a bit of mockery from about October last year cos after almost giving up alcohol in favour of E I started drinking again, more than ever before in my life.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 24 January 2003 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

2002, I must have at least a bottle of Jack Daniels in that year.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I have probably drunk more every year since 1998, because I seem to go out more every year, possibly. But I hardly ever get really drunk anymore, so I'm not sure.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 24 January 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

1994/95 - first year at university. Hideous amounts of alcohol consumed - Snakebite, vodka, cider, beer, gin, whisky, champagne, wine, blastaway, 20/20, alcopops. I remember cocktail parties at uni. - where you'd take it to turns to select a few bottles of whatever and mix it all up into a drink for your pal. Dear oh dear.
