What kinds of foods are good for helping someone who is irrationally feeling low and depressed?

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Donuts, bitch.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Chocolate brownies.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:13 (twenty-three years ago)

The act of cooking tends to be absorbing and therapeutic. Not something frozen, either, real cooking where you have to put together ingredients.

Maria (Maria), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Pussy.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Though I won't disagree with Millar, I think my vote must go for dark chocolate truffles - the sugar rush and cocoa buzz sometimes bring me up. But I also agree with Maria - when I've a bad day I spend the evening in the kitchen and usually end-up feeling cheerier 'cause I've made something that tastes good, looks good, and has been called into creation by *me*. (Especially true of baking bread/rolls - anything where the dough is kneaded - the therapy of working a living mass of dough can be intoxicating.)

Chocolate with a very high cocoa content. I'm talking, like Lindt 85% dark chocolate or something like that. Chocolate contains a chemical which duplicates the mood-lifting effect of Oxytocin. This is the closest thing there is to a topical anti-depressant.

Oh, and the comfort food of carbs and sugar don't hurt, either.

minna (minna), Saturday, 25 January 2003 00:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Miso soup, with a little bit of kombu and maybe some winter squash.

Douglas (Douglas), Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Weetabix with hot milk and brown sugar. Always cheers me up.

Celeste (Celeste), Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Orange Soda works a treat

baggy (baggy), Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Chocolate or ice cream. Coffee can be a good anti-depressant, until you drink too much and it turns into a depressant.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Green tea?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Spinach, seafood, dried beans, pasta, bread, cereal, coffee and garlic all boost serotonin levels in the brain which will improve your mood.

Ben Mott (Ben Mott), Saturday, 25 January 2003 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

carbonara. never ever fails me.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 25 January 2003 18:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream. Something about the combination of banana and all that dark chocolate is very soothing.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 25 January 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 28 March 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to add that i got to see the cute lesbian from school at the ice cream place, which cheered me up, despite her being a lesbian and me not having a vagina.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 28 March 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand that you're a vegan. But salmon is supposed to be very good for this sort of thing.

j.lu (j.lu), Sunday, 28 March 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

That's true, salmon will probably give you a vagina.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 28 March 2004 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

youn, Sunday, 28 March 2004 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bread pudding?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 28 March 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Food that you enjoy? (And try not to have a depressive guilt trip after wards.)

badger Kitten (badger Kitten), Sunday, 28 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

cook yourself some brownies and eat half a pan

kephm, Sunday, 28 March 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Bananas. Hello, serotonin. Also miso soup with seaweed or seaweed salad for loads of B12 - which is good for smoothing over the worst bits of PMS/T. Also the fish, especially oily fish like mackerel or salmon (the mackerel will be cheaper and less endangered so eat that). An entire Japanese meal will cheer you up in loads of other ways, too.

suzy (suzy), Sunday, 28 March 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

umm
microwave a wrapped hershey bar on high for 15 seconds.

it might be time to gorge myself on fast food, because it will be difficult to find someone to go out to japanese with at the moment.

(unless, of course, any NYC ILX0rs want to get Japanese food.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 28 March 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)
