Not particularly interested in the sport to any degree, but what with England getting trounced every time they take the field and this whole Zimbabwe business, it does seem to have plunged into a terminal crisis in this country. Can more knowledgeable people than me give some reasons and remedies for this please?

The ECB's decision to take the team to Zimbabwe is dud, btw.

Imran Khan was suggesting in the Guardian a day or two ago that if the UK follows the US in attacking Iraq, the other countries should boycott England at cricket. Or he may have been using that as an excuse to avoid playing an embarrassingly useless team.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 25 January 2003 12:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't. Mention. The. Cricket.

*starts sobbing uncontrollably

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 25 January 2003 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

well there was a thread earlier abt the whole debacle and at first I did think they should play as the govt won't pay whatever it costs but I think the matches can be easily rearranged (which i wasn't too sure abt on the last thread) and now i think that's what should happen.

The prob is that Nasser is got to say: 'we won't play'! and it is tricky for a sports person who has never made a political decision of this magnitude, under the yes of the media...to be thrust into the spotlight like that is quite difficult.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 25 January 2003 15:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I think with the news that some England have received threatening letters about violence in Zimbabwe that the match should be played elsewhere.

England never beat Australia, but recent performances have been encouraging. And the World Cup is only one-day cricket, and this is a form of the game that is not a patch on a Test series (IMHO).

Total concurrence.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 26 January 2003 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

on the radio this morning they were saying it HAD been moved!!?? (and also that everyone now tht the ICC guy was a dick)

did i dream this? (my clock radio went off at abt 7.05 for some reason so i may have) (it is a simpson's tableau w.bart throwing paint at homer and requires a degree in post-atomic paleo-necromancy to actually set the time korrektly)

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Not Bart pouring coffee over Homer? Cos that's the one I have. Bart is copying Itchy & Scratchy. Homer says "Why you little..." "Bombs away man!" "D'oh!"

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 12:04 (twenty-three years ago)

well I saw a bit of the news this morning: all it said was that nasser and the team were going to issue a statement saying that they do not want to play.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 26 January 2003 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yes it could be coffee, except it's RED: the dialogue is as you set down

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I don't know why I assume it is coffee. The Itchy & Scratchy inspiration is poison (bottle with skull & crossbones). Bart does pour from a mug, though, so I don't think paint is likely. Maybe a red cold drink is most likely.

Others may not think this is an important point...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

it is a political metaphor for the cricketing-in-zimbabwe wotnot

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd challenge you to back that up, except I bet you could.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, "racial discrimination", wtf?

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't be surprised if this the end of his umpiring career.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

He seems unwilling to take any responsibility for his actions, and playing the race card is pretty inexcusable.

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

Hurrah England won a 1 day game!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:27 (nineteen years ago)

And against Australia! Again!

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:29 (nineteen years ago)

A final, no less. And a first choice australian side (minus Symonds)

Matt (Matt), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:30 (nineteen years ago)

Roll on the World Cup!!

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:31 (nineteen years ago)

It's a shoo-in now, surely.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:38 (nineteen years ago)

Speaking of cricket in zuimbabwe (as we were four years ago) I note with alarm that cricinfo can't even get a scorer into the country for their current series. Clearly irrelevant when set against the rest of the country's travails (though this is a thread about cricket, after all) but it does show how long this shit's been going on for. Poor Zimbabwe.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 9 February 2007 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

Wondering if Pietersen's injury and subsequent departure from this tournament has been the turning point..

But yes, well done, we're at least into a bit form, so hopefully the world cup won't be a disaster at the very least.

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

Collingwood is great, isn't he! 2 run outs, a blinding catch and a 2nd consecutive century! Hopefully he'll maintain form up to the world cup...

Neil Stewart (Neil Stewart), Friday, 9 February 2007 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

Saw the highlights and Collingwood was incredible really.

Also LOL @ McGrath's butter fingers..

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Saturday, 10 February 2007 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

2-0. Over and out. Hard luck Aussies, jolly well played but just not good enough etc

Tom D. (Dada), Sunday, 11 February 2007 13:56 (nineteen years ago)

Huzzah!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 11 February 2007 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Collingwood again - 70 and then two wkts. Nice to get something out of this tour, and to wonder what could've been if the one-day series was scheduled before instead of after the Ashes.

xyzzzz__ (jdesouza), Sunday, 11 February 2007 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

and suddenly the sun's out, the town's buzzing, the cold's gone, and all is SFA-OK. this team w/KP instead of Dalrymple and Anderson/Lewis ahead of Mahmood ought to start the WC.

Kevin Pietersen would actually be my pick as ODI captain, but that's a view I suspect few share.

to scour or to pop? (Haberdager), Sunday, 11 February 2007 14:22 (nineteen years ago)

six years pass...

Fuck it I'll just pick a cricket thread.

Whose heads are gonna roll?
