The new Sean M. Hall (Piano Man), Sunday, 26 January 2003 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry, I mostly despise San Francisco.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Well I never! Why? Who could hate us?

Well, I can see this.

The new Sean M. Hall (Piano Man), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

actually I posted that drunk. There are things I love about the area and have many great friends there; but there are too many annoyances for me to live in SF again. I do enjoy visiting now.

ok I'll join.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never been there, but my company has a hotel there so maybe one day they'll send me on a business trip there. Considering they won't even send me on the $100 trips to Boston, I'm not holding my breath.

But seriously, have you SFers seen the new Four Seasons there? I was wondering how it is, from a non-PR thing.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

It looks lovely, actually. Very luxe. Spencer, why all the SF hate? We have Amoeba, don't forget. And burritos.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 05:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah, San Francisco - home of my favorite (and most perverse) memories... shopping at Stormy Leather for a corest and getting felt-up by the sale girl (and what a luscious little goth she was!); spending fleet week with my best gay friend, placing on bets on whether a given sailor would prefer his company or mine; wandering the Tenderloin, drunk, after giving a cab driver wrong directions; spending way too much time at the O'Farrell Theater; going to Sunday services at Glide Memorial and being seated between a 6'+ transvestite in hit pink latex and needing a shave and a delightfully innebriated former sailor who kept trying to convince me that we should go up on stage and take over from the musicians, 'cuase he thought we'd do a better job on the hymns (though I told him I didn't play a single instrument; clean-up and disaster relief after the '89 Quake; spending a whole day wandering around through the financial district trying to find the federal office so I could get an emergency passport; having the best meals of my life on the myriad of restaurants. Crap, now I'm all homesick.

It's pathetic, but Downtown Disney has a Ghirardelli's Ice Cream parlour, and inside is a mural of SF - I can't go into the parlour any more as I burst into tears.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 06:12 (twenty-three years ago)

spread the hate spencer.

gygax!, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 06:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll join, of course ;)

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Spencer, why all the SF hate? We have Amoeba, don't forget. And burritos.

remember, I live in L.A. where there's a gigantic Amoeba and Mission Burrrito substitutes. The main foods I miss are Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers (god I miss them), and Cancun burritos in Berkeley (actually I miss the cascabel salsa).

as for the hate, my main problem is that there's no edge to life there and people seem to be a little smug about "the best place on earth". also, the weather is brutal and people aren't especially friendly/fun out in bars etc.

who knows, one day I may just freak out and move back, but right now, I don't miss it a bit.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, with the exception of the bit about the weather, I totally agree with you! I try and tell myself I'm edgy as it is, I don't need anymore edge, etc., but I wonder if I'm just kidding myself sometimes. I have long said people are not that friendly/fun in bars here myself, but rarely find anyone to agree since it all depends on where you hang out I guess. There is no denying SF's beauty, and the convenience of its size and public transportation, as well as the above mentioned stuff. But sometimes I wonder if I've made the right decision. I can believe LA is more friendly and fun, but edgy? Despite edgy being a pretty amorphous term, can anyone confirm this? Perhaps a subject for its own thread, but sell me on LA. My firm has an office there, so moving, while not in my plans, is not out of the question.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Perhaps a subject for its own thread, but sell me on LA.

We're all here and we rule.

(I'll leave the serious answers for those actually living in the place.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:15 (twenty-three years ago)

SF is just too pleasant for me. You know I mentioned "the best place on earth" which is KPIX Channel 5's slogan. When there's not much news, they actually interview random people at the end of newscasts and ask them why they think the SF Bay Area is "the best place on earth".

by contrast, KCBS Channel 2 news asks people on the street this question "What's Right About L.A."

I don't think that L.A. is a uniquely edgy city. I was getting more at the fact that SF is just so warm and fuzzily in love with itself (depite the damp foggy climate which I hate), that it's become apathetic, entrenched and bougie. It's the NPR of cities. There's never anything to shout about.

I sound overly harsh and don't want to be the resident Frisco-hater, but I just don't think my personality is compatible with it. That's why I wouldn't necessarily urge you to move down here. But you should definitely visit and the LA ilxor massive will take you around to some "edgy" hotspots!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:40 (twenty-three years ago)

clarification: KCBS is a Los Angeles TV station.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:45 (twenty-three years ago)

LA Sucks and you know it. Why? It's because of the way they treated SF after 1906 quake. More later.

The new Sean M. Hall (Piano Man), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

LA does suck and I know it and that's exactly my point. SF doesn't know it sucks and that's a problem.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Which is better to visit? San Fran or LA?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

actually la sux worse, water. the only saving grace is NR

learn to swim

jimmybaker, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

the only saving grace is NR

Taco Mesa would make it two.

learn to swim

Now you've got me humming the riff (no bad thing).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Honestly Sarah, you would probably like San Francisco better for a first visit. It's really obviously very beautiful.

L.A. might take a bit more time to get into, but I can guarantee better weather.

also, I'm spacing, what's NR?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

San Francisco does not suck. Perhaps you're jealous, <sarcasm>god forbid that should happen...</sarcasm>

The new Sean M. Hall (Piano Man), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean, I just recommended SF to Sarah if she visits Cali, clearly I don't think that SF sucks too much.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

don't back down to him spencer. tell it like it is.

gygax!, Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

esp. wrt: the weather.

brrrrrrr utal.

gygax!, Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Some say that SF = Brighton. Others that LA = Aberdeen. Discuss. (Some = Strewart Home) (Others as well)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:59 (twenty-three years ago)

At least LA isn't as bad as New York

The new Sean M. Hall (Piano Man), Friday, 31 January 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

don't make Mary open up a can of NY whoop-ass!

For the record, I love NYC!!!!!!! what's not to love?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 31 January 2003 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

mary. this LA as Aberdeen thing has GOT to stop! it so clearly isnt!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 31 January 2003 10:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Ormskirk beats you all hands down. We've got a man who goes from pub to pub selling fish products.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, book me a ticket!

smee (smee), Friday, 31 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

You never told us how LA treated SF after the earthquake, Sean. And what is NR?

I must add that NYC really has it all. Except cheap apartments.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

how LA treated SF after the earthquake:

financially well...

LA County Sales tax went from 7.75 to 8.25% to pay for damages and retrofitting which continues today (North Base of Golden Gate Bridge nearing completion).

One thing NYC doesn't have (as Spencer Chow will attest) is 85 degree F winter days as LA had yesterday.

gygax!, Friday, 31 January 2003 15:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I know, it was hell. Bad allergy day, I guess.

Arthur (Arthur), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd rather sneeze from allergies than from a cold...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 31 January 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

eight months pass...
All the BART trains have stopped because of a woman giving birth at Embarcadero station!

adaml (adaml), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

how does BART compare to the Tube adam?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...well, it's not any cheaper, less regular, but maybe a bit less busy and a bit more futuristic and cool. I like it, but the masochist in me misses the tube sometimes...

adaml (adaml), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(How's the newjob?)

adaml (adaml), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i imagine BART as more DLR-y, which is cool as i am fond of the DLR tho i so rarely get to use it.

new job is cool thanks - altho worryingly my ILX activity has increased since starting...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Bart is like a subway that only makes 4 stops, ergo useless.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

BART is less than a subway because most subways are metropolitan and BART is mostly suburban (as Mary points out above, only 6 urban stops in metro SF compared to over 80 system wide). In San Francisco, most public transportation occurs above ground due to various topographic obstacles (hills but more importantly the size, SF is too small to have a legitimate subway because the stops would be too frequent = cost INeffective for underground transport except in the most heavily trafficked areas)...

hence the municipal railway (a combination of above/underground light rail, trams, street cars and trolleys) and municipal bus routes traversing the city.

Subways are also better suited for winter commutes when the elements of weather become a larger factor for above ground transport; however, SF's weather is pretty mild compared to London, Tokyo, NYC, Montreal.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax, you should go into PR for the City of SF.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, SF is a backwater

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

(where is the thread where i ask Sean M. Hall for his address?)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary= "SF is like this"
gygax!="no it's not, it's like this"

Isn't Sean M Hall about 14?

adaml (adaml), Friday, 17 October 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I SHOULD say-As "useless" things go, I'd be screwed without BART.

adaml (adaml), Friday, 17 October 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

they need to finally ditch the fucking carpet in BART. Even the new updated blue interior cars are starting to smell like ass. What happened to the rubber bottom ones? They seemed colder but less filthy.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 17 October 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a nice idea, though. The seats are pretty comfy, too.

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

adam. (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Based on a cursory search I just discovered that San Francisco housing is more affordable than Washington, assuming I didn't just see condos and homes that were in super shitty parts of town. I wonder if I can get a job out there sometime soon. DC, fuck you!
