all right, you solipsistic little babies, it's jody's turn to whine

Someone stole my Discman tonight.

I don't even care about the Discman, really... it was a shitty, cheap model and I don't think I paid more than $35 for it. But I got it a month ago; it's the first CD Walkman I've had since my (expensive) other one broke a year and a half ago. So I've been enjoying having it with me on long trips and things, and listening to CDs mere seconds after I've bought them and the shrink wrap has come off. So I feel like my newborn child has been snatched away (except I can replace it with the exact model and there won't be any morality weirdness).

Also, I'm disappointed in my fellow New Yorkers. I thought we were better than that. I'm usually smart enough to keep my possessions very close by -- I'm a trusting person, but you never know. However, I was at a party tonight, at a midtown bar where patrons were invited to check their belongings in the downstairs coat room. There weren't that many people in the bar, so even though there was no one watching the coats, I figured mine would be okay. I hid my Discman in my front pocket, and stuck the coat in the back with the pocket facing the wall.

The party was okay... I was hoping to spend the night flirting with all kinds of gorgeous people, but everyone was really shy and into their own scene. Depressing, kinda. One of my 2003 resolutions is to have a date on Valentine's Day, and tonight I was gonna get my Jody on and get a few phone numbers. Didn't exactly happen for me -- I gave one guy my e-mail address, but he pissed me off when he saw that I was left-handed and he started cracking insulting jokes about lefties. Way to make a good first impression, asshole.

But mainly I just spent the night talking to this one very posh Naomi Campbell-ish Jamaican-British "dancer." (Couldn't tell if she was bi or just touchy-feely, but she seemed a little into me. She was obviously very into herself; she knew she was the hottest one there and she was tremendously bored. No, I didn't get her number.)

I only had two beers. I wasn't in a terrible mood or anything, but I was a little "meh" and I was ready to pack it up and go home. But when I realized my Discman had been swiped from my coat, my mood went into the toilet. And there it remains.

Can I whine too? Please?

I am missing my first Ned Ragget Housewarming Party because in the last 20 hours: my car got towed and is now stuck in Culver City, I lost my house and car keys, my engine is destroyed and i cant buy groceries for a while to get everything fixed

After today I want to die. Oh but wait, my first day of work is Monday. So maybe I can kill myself on the Metro that I'm going to have to get used to now, yaay.

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 07:29 (twenty-three years ago)

that fucking sucks, JBR. the same thing happened to me a year and a half ago at a party on the Frying Pan (abandoned boat on NYC docks), and last summer some creep swiped my GameBoy Advance while I went to the bathroom at Starbuck's (that's my fault, obv). try to put it behind you.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 26 January 2003 07:32 (twenty-three years ago)

if it makes you three feel any better - my roommate left a still-in-shopping-bag $600 louis vuitton handbag [gift for his mother] on the 6 train on the way home from the store.

phil-two, Sunday, 26 January 2003 07:41 (twenty-three years ago)

That's awful. I'm sorry.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 07:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I left a $200 coat on the Amtrak (I got off in CT, it kept going to MA) and when I asked about the lost and found in the Boston station, I was greeted with laughter. Of course this is nothing like JBR's story, since I can only blame my own towering absentmindedness for losing my coat. (Not figuratively for once!)

Anyways, Jody, is it possible for other folks to get their Jody on, or is this a power that is yours alone? Because it sounds like it might come in handy.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody, I'm sorry. If it makes you feel better, you can borrow my discman and also I lost my gloves yet again.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:13 (twenty-three years ago)

or try this: on the Amtrak from Minneapolis to NYC, when I moved here two years ago, someone stole my Walkman, Discman, and Gameboy out of my backpack while I slept. The Gameboy was in a leather slipcase that contained my birth certificate. Yup.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist: the Jody is mine alone.

Ally: I lost my gloves this week too.

Matos: HAHAHAHA loser. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't feel so bad now actually. I get queeny and melodramatic sometimes and every bad thing that happens to me becomes a metaphor for a much greater and more profound dilemma. I need to stop thinking this way, obviously.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I shudder to think of losing my iPod. There have been a couple times where I've decided not to take it out, and reached for my old cassette walkman instead. Clunky, but serviceable.

Jen (nstop), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I think i've just lost "it," not that I'm saying I ever had "it" either

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:34 (twenty-three years ago)

:(

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Pauline Kael lost "it" at the movies! So she says.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm missing it as well, Vic - not because my car got towed, but the stupid bitch just won't start.

Jody, I'm sorry to hear about your discman - people suck.

luna (luna.c), Sunday, 26 January 2003 08:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Pauline Kael never had "it," only Clara Bow did

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 09:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I have "it" goddamnit, Vic.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 09:33 (twenty-three years ago)

i tried to jump start my car so's to get it over to my new house, it's been stranded in london st since i limped back into dunedin last week after having to sleep in the car in the freezing cold on the top of the kilmog, without any blankets or anything, man that sucked. - but as soon as we unhooked the jump leads it died. it's completely rooted! also i have to go to court next week for some stupid shit.
i'm not whining tho, i don't even care.

duane (24 hour troubleshooter), Sunday, 26 January 2003 09:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah but your "it" hasn't been seen by as many people as Clara's, so sorry honey, your "it" just aib't the shiznit IT DONT COMPARE

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 09:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Dude, Vic, think about it, I bet more youngsters today are familiar with my mug than Clara's. They're uneducated on films past. She's done. I am the here and now!!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I am thinking about "it," and since I haven't seen yours but have seen It from 1927 whuch starred Clara as a hat check girl with a fab bob, you lose

Show me your it, Ally, and I'll reconsider

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

"It" is my charisma, which I ooze according to Michael Daddino, who is the ILX authority on such. Also, my red coat.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I want to say something dirty here about you and oozing, but since you've sent me sexXxy pics b4, I won't.

But my self-control won't succeed everytime... I need to see more sexXxy pics soon, or else...O btw i'm going to email you for your address since i lost it and I have something to send you in return, cross-country, URGENTLY.

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:24 (twenty-three years ago)

So then email me, kid! I can't believe you lost my address, that's precious gold.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:25 (twenty-three years ago)

your address? hell i've lost "it,"!!!!

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody, Vic, Duane, "it"--I'm sorry, what a drag. I DJed tonight and someone told me I was playing too much "dark" music, like "Where's Your Head At". Hahahahahahaha. Anyway, I hope things turn out OK.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

examples of "dark", pls.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Where's Your Head At, obv.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:02 (twenty-three years ago)

"Dirrty"

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ride the Train", "Crosstown Traffic", that "Highway to Hell" Beck bootleg, the "Push It"/"No Fun" bootleg. Guitar stuff, mainly.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

"Emotions" - Mariah

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, if you say you have 'it', you don't have 'it'!!! So stop discussing your 'itness' because you will be in danger of losing 'it' and becoming Mariah Carey and we all know what happened to Mariah adn her high voice.

Jody Beth Rosen getting pisssed of because of lefty jokes? Why does everything have to be so complicated?

robotman, Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Small, heartwarming story for y'all: a couple of years ago, my now-wife and I were on a bus in Reykjavik, and she accidentally left her favorite (and not-inexpensive) leather jacket on it. Two hours later, we realized what had happened, caught another bus, and asked the driver if he could tell us the number for the bus line's lost-and-found department.

He called the lost-and-found on the spot, and they had the jacket. But it was too late for us to get to the bus line HQ, and we were leaving the next morning... so the guy from lost-and-found drove 80 miles to drop it off for us at a place we were going in the morning en route to the airport.

People sometimes don't suck, at all.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

In Japan it's like that too. F'rinstance, my orange folding bike got rusty in the rainy season when I was out of Japan, and when I got back I decided to buy a nice new yellow one to replace it. As for disposing of the old one, rather than go through the hassle of selling it or taking it to the city dump (the Japanese are very particular about recycling, geddit?) I decided to leave it on the street unlocked.

I'd done this in New York with a scooter I wanted to get rid of, and in Williamsburg it got nicked within five minutes. In London I'd had three bikes nicked even with the locks on. I figured it wouldn't be a problem, and left my old orange bike a little way down the street from my house, by a play park. Well, three months later it was still there, unlocked.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I lost my gloves this week, too.

Somewhere in New York is a four-handed goblin wearing our gloves, my orange and pink scarf, the belt to Ally's coat and a $600 Louis Vuitton handbag, listening to Jody's mix on her Discman. This goblin should be pretty conspicuous so we can get torches and hunt it down after the Matos FAP.

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

jody, urgent and key: did you pull off planned quickie in toilet stall with worthless hipster?

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh you Americans, it's all hipster this and quickie that, personally I blame electroclash, you need some good honest rock and or roll.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh you Irish, always with your newfangled "rock and or roll."

felicity (felicity), Sunday, 26 January 2003 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Newfangled and Irish may never have been in the same sentence before, a taxi driver last night asked me when they play the slow songs at the club.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 January 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

That goblin's transport is being financed by my missing Metrocard.

Arthur ha ha ha, that reminds me of one of my college parties, where I played Siouxsie, The Cramps, The Birthday Party, Gary Numan, etc and some girl came up to me and said "Why don't you play something good? Like 80s music?" HA HA HA.

rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 26 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I lost my heart to a Starship Trooper.

Lara (Lara), Sunday, 26 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I lost my Enrique hat. Now when I tell girls I will be their hero, they just laugh.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 26 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Hand in hand, did you conquer space?

There are good people around, bless them. :-) Arthur, those guys were worthless. Ignore them and come down here for brunch instead.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 26 January 2003 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

There are good people around, bless them.

That's the trouble. You just can't get the criminals any more. Where's a thief when you need one?

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 26 January 2003 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone stole my Discman tonight.

Just went out and got a new one. Paid $50, which was exactly the amount I was looking to spend. Yesterday I was in Times Square and I saw a few electronics stores that were selling the same model for $110.

Where's a thief when you need one?

*gestures towards midtown*

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

jody, urgent and key: did you pull off planned quickie in toilet stall with worthless hipster?

What do you think, Jess?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:59 (twenty-three years ago)

ass cherries ahoy

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I could mention the kleptomaniac roommate I had about a decade ago, but I don't want to harsh anyone's mellow.
