It's 3/4/5 AM in the USA. You are awake, and why?

I'm awake because: I fell asleep at 10 PM and woke up, sadly refreshed, at 2 AM. I then had some labnah and got involved in comparing versions of "The Unquiet Grave" in my record collection. I have a movie date later this morning so I'd best be going back to sleep soon. How about you?

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It's 10:15am! < /smartass>

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll be sleeping at 10:15am! It's 5:18 right now. I can't sleep, was partying with friends and just can't get to bed, I get wound up. I haven't been sleeping like virtually at all lately, besides the weekend I had some short term flu like thing. I hope to go to bed around 6 or 7, and then wake up around noon or 1.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm awake because

a) I'm an insomniac
b) it's too cold to sleep
c) I'm still really annoyed/depressed about my Discman being stolen

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Re. (b), I finally got my landlord to hike up the furnace. The last few nights it was about 20 degrees in my apartment c. 11 PM. Brrrrr. Are you having radiator problems too?

I should note that I am now doing work, as in, work I should be doing on a weekday. Pathetic I know. It's because I'm in the middle of jury duty and feel bad leaving all my work for my boss.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I can buy you a new one, come to Matos's birthday. It's a late/early birthday/holiday present. I know it's not going to get rid of the annoyance because the item itself isn't the issue but maybe you would feel a little better.

The thing about your apt sucks too. I had no heat for a long long time before my boss took over the building, and fixed the heat for me. It's true, it gets to a point where you just can't sleep, even with sweats and blankets, because your nose is still cold and it'll bother you all night...

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I am awake because I have been going to bed at 7 or 8am every single night for the last month and don't have any need/urge to change it

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you having radiator problems too?

I don't have a radiator in my bedroom, only a heat pipe (which just coughs, as the country music station plays soft).

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:37 (twenty-three years ago)

The pipe might need to be snaked.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

I can buy you a new one, come to Matos's birthday. It's a late/early birthday/holiday present. I know it's not going to get rid of the annoyance because the item itself isn't the issue but maybe you would feel a little better

Thanks, that's really generous, but you totally don't have to. It's OK. I'll replace it myself.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Oooh, thank you Jody, you can add Blonde on Blonde to the list of records I'm playing today. Oh, and after that I'm going to listen to Smokey Robinson. Oooh, I'm feeling a little light headed...

(That line--about the heat pipe coughing and the country music station playing soft--always reminds me of taking bus trips across Michigan. The old Greyhound buses, where the drivers could feel free to play country music stations softly instead of blaring bad movies from built-in TVs.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

(So much for going back to sleep. I'm going to listen to Dylan and Smokey, get some warm cinnamon rolls, and then wander around until The Band Wagon begins at 11:30.)

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

going back to sleep? You fool. You're part of the 24 hour party now.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to fall asleep at movies when I haven't had enough sleep, but Cyd Charisse's gams should be incentive enough to keep my eyes open.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 10:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I stayed out very late on Friday, then got up only a few hours later because my friend Davie made me some awesome french toast, then went back to sleep for most of the day. So now my sleep schedule is totally messed up. And I am going out again tonight. Gah.

Jen (nstop), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's really fucked up is, if I get my sleep schedule all messed up (viz. Jen) I'll be sleeping through trial on Monday which means either the judge will yell at me or a mistrial will be declared. So my going out for cinnamon rolls will impact our democracy in unutterable ways. Or not.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

you too, Jen? Jesus, we might as well have a FAP (just kidding, tried this already but it isn't gonna work, oh well)

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist is my new ILE crush.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Amateurist is the greatest.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm up for dinner in lieu of middle-of-the-night FAP action. I will probably wake up just in time.

Jen (nstop), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I've obv given all of you the wrong impression.

Amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 26 January 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Felicatas -- I hope you are well rested enough for tomorrow. I am awake bc I did nothing all day and I feel melancholy. I finished Simon's book and am listening to the newest in Swedish electropop -- Jay-Jay Johnson. Hello Matos.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I am awake and I'm working on various mix CDs that I owe people.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Rust never sleeps. Neither does NyCiLx it would seem.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I just bought New Order RETRO and my eyes are rolling into the back of my head in ecstasy... Peter Saville is my personal Jesus.

I'm also doing my own 4 disc set, 1 of Joy Division and 3 of New Order for a friend who's lending me his apartment in SF this weekend. yay!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Impromptu FAP!! (Well, maybe not.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I just tell you I love you all?

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha... I am awake too. Sorting all the bills I've had scattered across my apartment for the past few months, tax preparation, etc. Ugh.

Jen (nstop), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Eek I have to pay my bills. I have been putting it off for so long. What can I do to cheer myself up? I have already had Belgian Waffle Royale from oh no! Odessa!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 February 2003 09:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm awake 'cause I have absolutely no self-discipline or self-control. The average time at which I go to bed has been creeping forward by about an hour each year for the last few, which means that in just a couple years I shall be a TRUE VAMPIRE.

muahahahahahahahahahahahahahah! ha. hmmmm....

Dan I., Thursday, 13 February 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I am a Vampire. Or neurotic. Ok, both

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 13 February 2003 10:50 (twenty-three years ago)

It is now 6 am. Who in this bitch is not going to sleep anytime soon?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I do not understand your "sleep."

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Some idiot was clomping around in the hallway outside my apartment. I usually get up at 6 so I've opted to stay up and monitor my soulseek downloads for impending burning to CD. Yay.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Insomnia, which happens frequently. I'm making jambalaya to reheat for lunch tomorrow, to save time.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got a lecture at 2pm, so I don't think I'll be sleeping for a bit yet..

alix (alix), Thursday, 13 February 2003 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't want to open a new thread for this.

I am still at work! It's 10:30 PM. I stayed v. late to get some stuff done and decided to stay here and finish my French homework lest I try to start it at home and fall dead asleep on my couch. But--it is sad! I am at work at 10:30! There are all sorts of creepy noises coming from the water cooler and the fax machine! I'm afraid I won't leave until 1 AM!

Say hi everyone, so I don't feel as nervous and isolated.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 20 February 2003 04:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi, Amateurist!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 February 2003 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I passed out around two, woke up around 5:30 and have been up since.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The most tedious (and potentially sleep-inducing) book within arms reach of the bed is The Vanished Kingdom, a history/travelogue of Prussia. Attempting to read the chapter on Königsberg has resulted in a headache that the previous alcohol intake is augmenting instead of deflecting.

I am now thinking about Euler's topology problem "The Seven Bridges Of Königsberg"

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe the shapes on my blanket might form a Euler Path

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Diagrams/Konigsberg.jpeg

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 16 January 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Königsberg was absorbed into the Soviet Union after WWII and is now called Kaliningrad. The old Prussian city is now known as "a corridor of crime, it’s perhaps better known for AIDS epidemics, drugs plagues, pollution and bleak tower blocks."

It's also home to the "House Of The Soviets", widely considered to be the ugliest building in Russia. It was built on the remains of an old Prussian castle and the Soviet architect and construction crews forgot to fill in the old secret tunnels underneath the old castle. So the building was never occupied, all they could do is fence it off and wait for it to collapse.

Euler's seven bridges are long gone, at least one of the bridges now was never completed because of lack of funds.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 16 January 2004 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 5:04 AM. I had a couple drinks with dinner, came home and fell asleep (thereby blowing off a sorta-date I really wanted to break anyway; I know I'm awful), woke up I dunno maybe midnight and haven't been able to fall asleep since. Sometimes drinking will do that - make me wake up in the middle of the night. Usually it takes more than 2 drinks though. Anyway since I've been out of work my sleep schedule has been all messed up.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 16 January 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not 3am here yet, but at the rate I'm going I'm likely to still be awake then. I'm probably awake because I let myself get into really bad sleep patterns when I'm not working -- staying up till all hours and then sleeping in or taking naps.

I'd take a "sleeping pill," but I actually have work on Saturday and Sunday (after being off all this week) -- I have to be out in Reston at 8:30am, which means I have to leave here at 7:30am.
:^P

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 17 January 2004 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

it's 11:53pm pst. I have a duo improv gig tomorrow at 4. my big idea was to take recordings of his previous solo improv gigs, isolate sections with discrete monophonic notes, and map the tones to hocket when played on a keyboard. I waited until tonight to chart everything out, I'm about 25% through, and the results are sounding wretched bad, and I have no other ideas. there's a bottle of port in the next room I'm not supposed to open.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 17 January 2004 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm awake probably because of alcohol. But it's okay because apparently it's MLK day tomorrow and I don't have to go to work. Which also doesn't really matter because it looks like I might quit anyway.

the icebox (nordicskilla), Monday, 19 January 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

new insomnia thread

tweemu (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
I am so wanting to sleep I am about to sob. Every time I've tried I get comfy and then masses of worries kick in. I feel like my career is about to fall over and die (along with large chunks of the UK magazine industry). I am having terrible financial panic and I feel I should be wearing a UN blue beret for advances in household diplomacy. It's the middle of the fucking night and I'm fucking cracking up. Visions of having to move back to Wolverhampton and work in a call centre of doing a manic tango of death in my brain. (This would probably not be happening if it wasn't nearly three o'clock.)

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Anna, if it's any consolation I spent the whole of last night like that. I didn't sleep. I actually found leaving the light on made me worry less. ILX is not good for your brain when it is in that state, though. Beware. And good luck.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

make yourself some herbal tea, drink it. wet a washcloth with cold water, lay down, lay it on your forehead. don't read anything or stay on the internet. breathe methodically.

i have insomnia, and often this routine works for me. eventually.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

me, today, on the phone: "if we have to live in a place with a shitty economy and no jobs, can't it at least be somewhere cool like argentina?"

stockholm cindy, montessori emo superstar (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks you all. I need ILx right now. I just want to feel there are people out there in the world that I can talk to right now who aren't going to:
1) Send me bills
2) Require vast amounts of cajoling in order to be anything other than madly defensive about the amount of bloody housework they do and be really fucking stubborn when it comes to just trying to get along with other co-habitees. When do I get to go mad and feel underappreciated? Why can't I loose the plot and turn to emotional blackmail (they will not see this, the only internet connection is in my room)? No, I have to make everyone tea and happiness and do the washing up in fucking secret so they think it might have been someone else and start liking one another again. It's not fair. It's not fucking fair.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry anna

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have pink. hair.

It was blonde, and the roots were growing out, and I was awake, so I thought ok, I'll fix this, forgetting the CARDINAL RULE OF HAIR DYE, to wit: over the counter blonde dye turns dark roots red. Or in my case, orange.

No problem, she thinks, I can fix this, I wanted to go red anyway.

Apparently I bought the wrong one. It was 2 am, it happens. No problem, thinks I, it's a little brighter than I wanted, but that's okay, it might be fun, I'll use it anyway, forgetting YET ANOTHER CARDINAL RULE OF HAIR COLOR, which is that anything you put on blonde will be DARKER BECAUSE BLONDE IS PALE, YOU DUMBASS.

I. HAVE. PINK. HAIR.

Going to work today, Aimee? Oh, I think not. Perhaps not ever again.

PINK. HAIR.

AND NOT IN A GOOD WAY.

If anyone needs me, I will be under my bed crying for the rest of my life.
