I just ordered a COMPELTELY INSANE pair of mid-thigh black boots from a medieval apparel company. The price was probably less than half what it would from any major retailer, even if the quality is only mediocre...now I just hope they fit.

I don't think there's a definite rule about ankle boots, but generally speaking the longer and thinner your legs, the more options you have. I pretty much keep ankle boots under pants. Just keep an eye on the proportions of things.
