Well, nobody ever discusses cars.Or am I just sad?

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

haha momus is totally into cars

you should ask him

geeta (geeta), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've thought about this as well. I drive a 1.8 turbo beetle w/ black leather and heated seats and I love it. I once had a chance to buy a DeLorean for 10K but I didn't. Someday when I've got a lot more money I'll make up for it. DeLoreans (refitted with porsche engines) = Best car ever.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 27 January 2003 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

DeLoreans are fabulous cars, just a shame the guy in charge of creating them was an embezzling fraudster. But then I suppose that just adds more character to the DeLorean marque. They do need to be painted,I am told,as the regular brushed stainless body is a real bitch to keep clean!

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Is your Beetle a new-generation (Golf-based),or have you gone a bit special with a Herbie?I am guessing that it's a new one,I hear that they do a four wheel drive 2.9 VR6 model.Any truth to this?

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 27 January 2003 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, you can buy them from a couple of shops now I think. The only onw I know of is up in Canada somewhere, they give it a completely new floorplan and plug it so full of enhancements it ends up being basically an AWD (not 4WD) Rally model with 20" wheels.

I want to get mine chipped and add a larger exhaust. They have a second-stage turbo add on for it as well but that's quite far off in the distance for me.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

norman phay to thread! umm, i like triumphs (i have a mark II 2000TC), and mark II cortinas, and hillman superminxes. but i don't know dick about cars. i should hang out with my Dad more, i'd learn a lot.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Nate's into this although I think he doesn't actually drive!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 04:51 (twenty-three years ago)

heh I don't know how to drive, but from a design perspective, I really like the BMW 3-series. I think the ultimate compromise would be to significantly reduce the amount that people drive (low/no emissions technology still does nothing to halt suburbanization, so it is not a complete solution to many leftist critiques), but still habe the government provide a fleet of fancy cars so that everyone who loves the idea of going for a spin in an Aston Martin once a month can do so!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

petrolhead? I thought maybe you were a gas huffer. Over here your kind are called gearheads.

That Girl (thatgirl), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything less than a 7-series BMW marks you as a loser with completely unhip class aspirations (read: McMansionites). Ugh.

Also, buying a horrifically ugly car just so you can say you own a particular series/model from a particular manufacturer = total dud.

I tend to think my choice of car illustrates my constant liberal-libertarian-pragmatist internal struggles. I'm a hippie car! but not really! I'm efficient! But I'm all fast and decked out in things like leather and heated seats and 17" rims! I look happy! But I'm black on black on black all around inside and out! etc.

Painting a DeLorean will keep you out of heaven

Millar (Millar), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:18 (twenty-three years ago)

carz r gay. truxx rokk 4eva!

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

truckist.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Why is it less aspirational to drive a 7-series? I have been driven around in one before and it was very nice but it is only a fun car when one can be in the back like that and get driven around. now THAT is aspirational.

Also I am a hardcore urbanist.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I will never drive one of these Nazi cars you people are talking about. I'm more of a Mopar person. My dream car is a Viper.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 27 January 2003 05:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree Felicity, I'm going to stop futzing about with these reliable, warrantied Nazi cars and get myself a 'Cuda. seriously.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:05 (twenty-three years ago)

my triumph is no nazi car. but its a NASTY car.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Other Axis countries make pretty reliable cars, too, you know. I drive one of those.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:16 (twenty-three years ago)

have you seen the Audi TT color that can only be called Panzer Gray?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:34 (twenty-three years ago)

The one with the Luftwafte Leather upholstery? I admit, it is nice.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 27 January 2003 06:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Geeta, only if they are very young.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 27 January 2003 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

How come car brands are called 'marques' - I've worked in branding for 5 yrs and I still don't know this!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 10:33 (twenty-three years ago)

NB I know zero about cars - I love Isabel's car though, it is chunky and comfortable; my workmate called it a 'noddy car' which is grebt in my book!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Axis of evil cars, Felicity? What is the hottest hatch in North Korea these days?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

audi TT = driven by psychopaths. Horrible little thing which gives out thee message I CANNOT AFFORD A 911, YET I STILL THINK I AM HOT SH!T. I want a Bristol Blenheim 3, or a Studebaker Avanti. Up in this part of the UK, BMWs are charver cars! I never thought |I'd see the day etc etc etc. I like old SAABs, Wolseleys & Tatras best of all drone drone drone.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Cars can fuck off, though I like them.

I've never heard this 'petrolhead' thing before either, That Girl. I thought this thread might be about That Petrol Emotion fans.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:18 (twenty-three years ago)

i want a citroen goddess but i can't drive

minna (minna), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Prior to my oh so sensible golf estate (station wagon) I had a turquoise '72 beetle. It had been slightly cal-looked by a previous owner and had original porsche 914 wheels. It blew up on my way down to Italy, it wasn't worth saving. Prior to that I had a basket case of a type three variant, know as the beast or the deviant. Both were great fun but I have neither the time money or driveway for a classic car.

I would dearly love a Citroën DS Chapron Cabriolet (or more likely a copy). This is a superlative in car design. I'd settle for a straight DS or SM though.

Ed (dali), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

car can fuck off, although I drive one sometimes.

I can't see me buying one of my own for many years to come----------IF EVER.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:35 (twenty-three years ago)

eugene speed were a band from essex, correct?

g-kit (g-kit), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

"Eugene Speed were a band from Essex, right?"

Correct,I know Dan,their bass player. We met when we were working on the same site.He was shocked to meet me!I have had the name Eugene Speed since the heady days of breakdancing(stop giggling,it was the nuts back then!)and I used to tag it all around Southend. After I moved away from the Essex area, one of the walls I(and many others) had tagged was used on an album cover for a local band.I don't know the name of the band,I just know that the lads who make up the Eugene Speed band saw the album cover and thought it had a ring to it.They won the Essex FM 'Battle of the Bands' competition in 1999,and were playing gigs all over the place last I heard.I returned to Essex in 1996,but only started using my 'stage name' again when I joined Klass FM in 1998.I had no problem with the guys using the name,as they had no problem with me.We appeal to different audiences, and there was once even talk of me doing a dance remix of one of their tunes!Does anyone know what they're up to now?

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i take it UK gearheads are called petrolheads? I'm an ex-gearhead. When I lived in the suburbs I had a number of badass old junkers, including a 70 AMX, a 73 Javelin, and a 77 Avanti II. Basically I had the skills to keep them going but a lack of the cash needed to fully restore them. When I moved down town a few years ago i sold everything. You brits have a cool little Vauxhall (it's really an opel right?) available, the VX220. That thing looks sweet. Impractical, but If i lived in the UK i would consider it, since it sells new for around 22K GBP it says on their website. Anyone have one of those?

g (graysonlane), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Back to cars,I lurve my old Fords.I got a pro-street '71 Capri running a Rover V8(a Buick 215 for the US crew),and an ultra-special Escort RS2000 X-Pack,again with a V8.That particular motor is getting a bit tired now,so I am cutting up an '89 Toyota Supra turbo with the view of shoving the turbo lump into the Escort.Should be fun/interesting/suicidal.My partner has an 86 Supra which is a minter. It's her pride and joy.Goes like stink, too.Last in the collection is a Mk1 Escort RS2000 pickup.I have been told that it is the only surviving example of a utility-vehicle project that Ford SVO in Boreham,Essex, were toying with.It has been rebuilt from the ground up,but lack of funds and time and space dictate that I have to sell her.SOB!Anyone want a bit of Ford history on their driveway?Twelve hundred quid and it's yours!
What I really,really want is a '69 Dodge Charger 440,or a Plymouth Superbird.If only......

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been thinking about learning to drive (for the past 5 years). If I ever get a car, I guess it'd have to be a monster truck.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

p.s. I currently have a cool little Isuzu but I actually don;t drie very much. If I ever get to live in a city with a real public trans system I will probably skip the car. Just get a motorcycle and rent a car when needed.,.,

g (graysonlane), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Forget the VX220,matey!Have a look at the Westfield XTR2.Just under 700kg,with a power to weight ratio of 450bhp/tonne(sorry,you'll have to work out the imperial equivalents!)and an asking price for a turnkey model of less than the Opel. And it's got a Hayabusa Suzuki bike engine in it,so it screams like a banshee! It matched a 7-litre Pagini Zonda(costing over £100,000)all round a test circuit, and it's fully road legal.Grin factor of ten!

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Monday, 27 January 2003 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

With all the drugs on other threads, I thought this one would be about sniffing petrol.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody her but us euphemisms.

Ed (dali), Monday, 27 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

eugene speed, send me link. performance is great but looks matter too...

Take some petrol, darling.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

. . . and then I realized that since the Daimler-Chrysler merger even a Dodge Viper is a Nazi car, too. Grrrrr.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I love my Toyota Corrolla.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Presently-wanted car: Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic
Aspirational car: BMW 3-series
Fantasy car: MG or other classic little convertible.

But I also covet a motor scooter (heh, as if I could afford that right now) -- I so wish that Vespa showroom hadn't opened near where I live.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know what they're up to now?

last i heard they're being compared to the stereophonics and pretending to be from ipswich.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Due to my job, I now know far too much about cars, more than I ever really had any desire to know. I don't think I much like any of them.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 13:27 (twenty-three years ago)

i googled the Westfield XTR2 and it sure looks fast but probably not something I want to drive around the mean streets of philly in...

g (graysonlane), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Current Car: Mercedes-Benz A160
Likely Next Car: Subaru Forester Turbo
Dream Car: Ariel Atom

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

After I moved away from the Essex area, one of the walls I(and many others) had tagged was used on an album cover for a local band.

i remember somewhere (don't remember where... refresh my memory) was written "eugene's speeding again".

now, back to your car stuff....

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

The tag of 'Eugene's speeding again' is now a bit faded but is written on the side of the bridge at the bottom of Valkyrie Road in westcliff,Essex. It can only really be seen when you drive up Palmerston Road at night and your headlights illuminate said wall.It is visible in daylight, but you have to look carefully.

The other favorite of mine involved a rival 'tagger'(sounds sad,I know!)called Liquid Ray.It went:

Liquid Ray has gone away,
Eugene Speed is here to stay.

As featured on bus shelters all over Essex(in about 1985!)

More car stuff?

Eugene Speed (Eugene Speed), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)
