Do you ever light your home with candles? If so, when?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha I did this morning when I woke up to find that the leccy had run out. It's not half so romantic at 7.30am when you're trying to find your clothes :/

Archel (Archel), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:23 (twenty-three years ago)

At my girlfriend's house they managed to pull off the lightswitch cord in the bathroom and have so far been unable to re-attach it. Unfortunately, the light didn't come on as the cord was pulled off so they now have candles burning in there when it's dark, using the logic that they are unlikely to start a fire in a room with so much water about. One candle is in the bath and the other is on top of the cistern. "Going to check on the candle" has now become the standard euphemism for taking a piss.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 January 2003 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm a big fan, although I admit that part of it is to do with having the light switch right on the other side of the room. I can stay lying in bed and blow the candles out.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 27 January 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I have 15 candles in my living room ( I know this coz my step-kids counted them at the weekend) and I light most of them most nights, it makes it feel cosy.

smee (smee), Monday, 27 January 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

You're all a bit nuts for using candles. Everyone is dying in house fires these days because they go ooh ooh candles.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

bed time ciggy anyone?

Alan (Alan), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

At least I keep an eye on my cigarettes.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:23 (twenty-three years ago)

My candles are mostly in, on or around my fireplace. They are all in proper candle holders and are never left unattended or burning for prolonged periods I've not had single mishap yet (touch wood). N, you are just a candle hater!

smee (smee), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

candles in pubs: dud in certain company.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Do NOT let them touch wood.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

N. - I really should have seen that coming....

RJG is OTM, candles in pubs=huge DUD

smee (smee), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

candles in pubs: classic in certain company.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I love candles in pubs for there they pose no risk to anyone as they are instantly extinguished by fat prodding fingers.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, candles in pubs: classic. fat prodding fingers tearing wax from candles in pubs: dud.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:43 (twenty-three years ago)

RJG it is our curiosity which sets man above the beasts!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:44 (twenty-three years ago)

curiosity killed the fat prodding fingers' owner.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

It would have to be a very big candle! Or one of those electric ones.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I love candles. I have them all over my apartment. I especially like them in the bedroom - ooh la la. But mostly I keep them in the bathroom for long hot baths. Wet skin glows so prettily by candlelight.

Also keep them in the kitchen to attack strong food odors and kitty food smell.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

no, I meant I'D get to kill them since incessant wax-tearing might annoy me or something...

RJG (RJG), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

He is an excitable man.

I bought a posh candle as part of someone's Christmas present. It smells divine but doesn't burn. Picture our disappointed faces.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Sarah what of kitty catching herself alight! The kitty fireball would cannon through your house, incinerating all in its wake.

Or she might knock over the candle, at least.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, I did have one little incident like that. I was petting my kitty Pepper one day a few months ago and noticed she was missing whiskers on one side of her little kitty head. Instead, she had little burnt, curled up black stubble. Ever since, I've been much more careful and made sure the candles were out of her reach (or she was out of the room).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

my wife is a candle fanatic. i like the smelly tarts. They should really make some in manly scents like Steak, Beer, Pizza, Sweatpants, Farts, Armpit....

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

there must be very few places in a room which *are* out of a cat's reach.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

'Out of kitty's reach'? Woa hoa and come come.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

My cats can be lazy... but I think mostly Pepper has just learned the hard way not to play with fire. She'll sniff the air a foot or so away from the candles and then run off.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not a bad cat master, I promise!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:25 (twenty-three years ago)

candles are pretty but not convenient. i mostly only use them when the power goes out.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:27 (twenty-three years ago)

What Maria said, though they are definitely nice in general. One in the bathroom while taking a warm soak = v. cool.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Errgh - picture of Ned taking a warm soak.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't invite you to contemplate it. Suffer the pains.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I wasn't 'contemplating it' - it's just some horrible porn just popped up in my mailbox.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

That's one way to describe it, I suppose.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

four years pass...

i have four burning right now -- an aromatherapy one for "relaxing," a brazilian cilantro one, an indonesian teak one, and a pink soy candle that's supposed to be berry something or other.

candles rule, we have eight pillar candles on the kitchen table we light almost every night before dinner.

cosmic vision | bleak epiphany | erotic email (map), Friday, 18 December 2020 21:14 (five years ago)

i h8 all scented candles, although tj's was selling beeswax candles last spring i believe and they had a very pleasant, natural, honeyed smell. i should have bought 20 of them.

cosmic vision | bleak epiphany | erotic email (map), Friday, 18 December 2020 21:18 (five years ago)

turn off lights, stare into candles, relax immediately

cosmic vision | bleak epiphany | erotic email (map), Friday, 18 December 2020 21:19 (five years ago)

From about the autumnal equinox to the vernal equinox we burn one candle on the table as we eat our supper. It's pleasant to have the warm yellow light. I dislike scented candles. Paraffin wax is OK, but beeswax candles are excellent and now that we can afford them, that's our standard kind.

candles kinda freak me out, do people leave rooms with lit candles unattended? i think I became neurotic from this after watching Amadeus or something and being horrified at the quantities of candles in the ballrooms etc.. also brian Williams talking about going to his in-laws house in Sweden for Christmas where they have all these candles for tree ornaments... how kids are running around and everybody’s eyes are glued to the tree the entire time in case a kid knocks a candle or three over.

brimstead, Friday, 18 December 2020 21:32 (five years ago)

i always put my candles six inches or less from the drapes, because i love that cozy "candles in the window" look from outside.
