DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder which match the BBC will want to televise.

Hmmmmmm.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:38 (twenty-three years ago)

the big tie: Man Utd v Arsenal

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

revenge time for arsenal.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Wolves v Rochdale = GLAMOUR TIE.

I can see Southampton making the final and possibly winning it the way they're playing at the moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Martian, that was a rhetorical question.

Unless its Palace v Gillingham.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

It was DJ Martian! He ate (all) the pie(s)!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Fulham v Burnley

It's a match between the two least arrogant self-aggrandising smug fans in the league! Or would that be Wolves v QPR?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I love that DJ Martian did not get the irony.

Why do they always call the biggest all-Premiership matches 'the pick of the ties'? We can see these two teams play each other all the bloody time anyway - Man Utd vs say, Gillingham would be much more of a 'pick of the ties' for me.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

yes its bad when an all preimership tie is described this way, but its worse when its something like spurs vs everton

gareth (gareth), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

But Manu haven't drawn Gillingham. They got Arsenal.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

On a more important note - I am looking forward to watching Waltham Abbey vs AFC Wimbledon in the last 8 of the Cherry Red Books Capital Counties Feeder Leagues Trophy in a couple of weeks time.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:52 (twenty-three years ago)

[dastoor, i had already typed it out - published it - then saw an notice / alert of pete's quick comment - then decided to leave my message as it was .. then it was added to thread.]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, DJ Martian I love that you had to point out that Man Utd vs. Arsenal was the big tie. Whatever - I LOVE YOU.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 27 January 2003 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

But surely its good for the smaller teams to have the big boys taking each other out early on?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

yes its bad when an all preimership tie is described this way, but its worse when its something like spurs vs everton

*Sob*

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark C, you might like to read this.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:20 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sticking with Wolves or Watford to make the semis...its a W thang y'all...maybe Walsall can stitch up the Blades too

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

On a more important note - I am looking forward to watching Waltham Abbey vs AFC Wimbledon in the last 8 of the Cherry Red Books Capital Counties Feeder Leagues Trophy in a couple of weeks time.

You wouldn't be if you'd have been at Hartley Wintney (more firm of lawyers than a football team?) on Saturday. Sob.

Going on Wednesday? Barkingside in the London Senior Cup (in which Wimbledon are undefeated since 1975...)

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder which match the BBC will want to televise.

Don't Sky get first pick anyway?

On a more important note - I am looking forward to watching Waltham Abbey vs AFC Wimbledon in the last 8 of the Cherry Red Books Capital Counties Feeder Leagues Trophy in a couple of weeks time.

Best of luck to AFC Wimbledon. If they get promoted this year how many leagues are they away from Div 3? So how many years before they play 'Franchise FC'? The ultimate grudge match.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

i think Southampton or Norwich might also get to the last four

Chelsea to win the cup tho, if Zola stays on this form

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

How many leagues away? Depends if Franchise stay where they are; we're 4 promotions away from Division 3 at things stand - though the non-league pyramid is going through upheaval at the moment, so whether that will stay the same is another matter entirely.

If we won promotion every year and they got relegated the same, we'd meet in the Conference in 3 years. But is unlikely to happen, as we won't win promotion every year, and they won't be in business*.

* - cross reference with masturbation thread.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

But is unlikely to happen, as we won't win promotion every year, and they won't be in business*.

You could well be right Dave, but wouldn't you like to play them, just once, before they go under?

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. I daydream regularly about this. It's the FA Cup, and I'm playing (yeah yeah, and there's John Robertson, and he's handing the ball TO ME!) and it involves me, a hat-trick, a ball kicked so so hard into the Directors box that it strikes one of the occupants on the end of their nose and...

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i had a gut feeling this morning that man U would get arsenal. tie of round is stoke v chelsea obv. revenge for '72! hope burnley go still further tho'.

zebedee, Monday, 27 January 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I like your thinking, Dave! I don't think I'm going to the Barkingside match, though I will be at the Raynes Park (as in "we hate Raynes Park and we hate Raynes Park" etc.) game on Saturday. I read reports about the Hartley Wintney game, and I am increasingly disgusted by our inability to not give away soft golas in EVERY FUCKING MATCH. I bet we played better than at Frenford, though.

ILE trip to see the Mighty Dons? Anyone?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Billy, thanks for the link - it's an excellent article, and I hope all football lovers get the chance to read it.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark C / Davey B: I want to come! Not sure abt Saturday but might be on for Wednesday. Why doesn't the AFCW site have details of where they play home games / how to get there?

Tim (Tim), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I seem to recall an even better article on AFC Wimbledon in FourFourTwo, written by someone notamillionmilesfromhere.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim, then we should! This is the link to ground details and how to get there. So you'd want to go this Wednesday? Would anyone else be up for it? Vicky?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes! Errr, haha I R vvf dumm.

Yes I'm on for Wednesday. Coffee cups! Ephemera! Beneath the silent Kingston stars etc etc!

Tim (Tim), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

p.s. Vicky, there'll be pie.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Kingsmeadow - groovio. Though an ILE trip it will have to work hard to top the AFC W trip I've organised to see St Pauli in March. It started with a few people and there are now 87 of us going. I ph34r for the pilot.

Meet at 6 in the Hole in the Wall??

Ps - good article in 442 is here

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

The Chairman of AFC Wimbledon is a mate of mine, and I've been meaning to go all season without getting round to it. Yeah, I'm up for it, if only so I can wander round hob-nobbing with The Important People in order to look big.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 27 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-three years ago)

It's hard to look big standing next to Kris. Har har

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I am increasingly disgusted by our inability to not give away soft golas in EVERY FUCKING MATCH

Club bankrupted in crap 1980s footwear giveaway madness! Will this obsessive-compulsive disorder to have the Combined Harvester League playing with plastic moulded studs never end!

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:23 (twenty-three years ago)

The giving away Golas thing was a subtle ploy to get Gareth to come, I think.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

wait, there are golas?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:38 (twenty-three years ago)

soft ones!

Tim (Tim), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Being given! Away!

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Man Utd vs Arsenal = an opportunity for us to see clips of Ryan Giggs's remarkable chest wig from Villa Park 1999. Over and over again.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't laughed this much at people mocking me for ages!

Anyway, I hope we don't let them have so many soft gaols from now on. It's got to stop.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed. Bloody open prisons, like going to a holiday camp - it's all videogames and serve-yourself buffets.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

ManUre/Arsenal showdown = nostalgia for 1999 = talk of quadruples in the air.

But enough about Alex Ferguson. Har.

But seriously though, here's hoping 'the Chelse' get stuffed. They were really, really mocking towards Shrewsbury last night. Especially when Jemson airkicked (it's happened to be the best of us).

I don't like Chelsea. At all. Ugh. I'd love to see the deep well of affection across the land if they went into administration, and people pissed themselves laughing spontaneously ran bucket collections to help.

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

sheff utd look good, even despite allison and peschisolido

watford will be licking their lips tonite

zemko (bob), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody likes Chelsea. Not even their own fans.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

< generalisations that are true but dangerous roads to go down but fuck it anyway because it's Chelsea >

Was at Motspur Park a few weeks back, where some drunken people were climbing the steps. They were blocking the stairwell and laughing as they indulged in some casual anti-Korean 'jokes' that the Duke of Edinburgh would have eschewed. I made my desire to pass known to them, to which they said 'Sorry mate, I'm always fucking arseholed when the Chelse win'.

< / generalisations that are true but dangerous roads to go down but fuck it anyway because it's Chelsea >

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Footie fans get pissed and make racist jokes? Seems a fairly safe generalisation...

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:38 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, they're all scum

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigh. Everywhere does indeed have Man Utd fans...

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 27 January 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

would anyone like a prawn mayonnaise sandwich?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 27 January 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

No one has pointed out that we might well also have Liverpool vs Leeds, which is another giant clash, and will dispose of another of the top clubs of recent years.

I don't much give a fuck, as Bristol Rovers aren't likely to win it this year.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 27 January 2003 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry to keep hijacking this thread, but do we have a definitive guest list yet for the AFCW match on Wednesday? I'm all excited that people are coming to see muh beloved Wombles!

I'm really annoyed I've mislaid my scarf, and I'm buggered if I'm wearing a Franchise one instead.

I won't be able to meet in the Hole in the Wall, but I'll see you there, I expect - Tim, will you have your mobile?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 27 January 2003 22:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I'm in. Yes, see you there. Yes, I'll have my mobile. Yes, I'll be at the Hole in the Wall at 6. Yes I said yes ect ect.

One of these years Exeter will win the FA Cup.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

ect?

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

But Liverpool v Leeds will be the most disappointing tie of the 5th round, surely? It has 1-0 win written all over it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:53 (twenty-three years ago)

: Leeds - very boring story. Not going to be relegated. Sob.
: Liverpool - very boring team. Not going to get the ball wide.

All adds up to live coverage, as it features teams with playaz who are in the papers lots.

* Tangent alert * I heard that the BBC RP unit (do they have such a thing, or is this proof of wind-up?) said Shrewsbury should be pronounced 'Shroosbury' as opposed to 'Shrowsbury'. What do people in Shrewsbury say?

* Tangent alert * Motson is a useless cock, whilst Davies is a supercillous cock. Commentating standards ain't what they used to be.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always said shroos. Cos that the way Shrews is said. However this is a Mark S to thread if ever I saw one. (I thing he says Shrows).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Sigh. Everywhere does indeed have Man Utd fans...

But there are more AFC Wimbledon supporters on ILX than United it seems, so I'm sure you can cope, Dave.

Btw, there were plans to 'do an AFC Wimbledon' and set up a 'real' United team in one of the Manchester leagues if the Murdoch deal went ahead. Not that we would've got (or expected) the same levels of sympathy as you lot have (quite rightly) received in the last year or so, but you're not the only team to have faced the destruction of everything your club stands for. And I hope your campaign is as successful as ours was.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Indeed. But you won. We fought 'the best supporter campiagn evoh!*'

* - modelled on Labour's superb 1987 General Election campaign.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I was slightly pissed off that (normally clued-up red) Jim White got that wrong in the article. How soon they forget.

James Ball (James Ball), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)
