attn ile computing wizards: cd-writer question

i have recently installed a new (old...it's my drive from home) cd-writer on this computer after the internal one crapped out a few weeks back. every time i have tried to burn a cd however, i get about 7% in and it comes back with "invalid command" and the burn fails. i have poured through the help guide and there's nothing on this, that i can see. does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

particulars:

the computer is a pc. no particular brand since it was cobbled together by nancy's dad. it runs fine and i've never had any major problems with it.
the drive is an external hp 8200.
the software being used is ahead's nero v. 5.04. it's more than likely a crack obtained by nancy's dad.
i have never had any problem with either drive or software.

i have poured through the help guide and there's nothing on this, that i can see.

meaning there's nothing on an error message that reads "invalid command" which seems nice and vague, the fuckers.

The Nero page has this.

Yeah, I was having problems burning at 32x and since I started burning at 28x all my discs have turned out fine.

here are some other things.

-check the order of your IDE cables. (I'm not even sure exactly what to do here, except to switch them around and reboot).
-defrag your hard drive
-check the other software settings (i use a likely cracked Nero too)
-throw everything out your window.

have you used any filters (eq, normalize, etc.) on your disc? i found that with nero, if you have filters on any tracks you must go into the compilation settings just prior to burning and check the box on the Audio-CD tab called 'calculate audio filters on-the-fly'. If you don't, you will get a buffer underrun.

Presumably you could also disable 'disc at once' mode.

granted, when i've had this problem, i didn't get your invalid command error. but i thought i'd throw this out there anyway.

best wishes

There is a possiblity that for some reason between when you used it on one computer and now that the drive crapped out.

update: i managed to burn one full cd before going back to "invalid command."

Hmmm. Is there any particular MP3 or MP3s that are doing this or is it random? Every once and a while mine gets nuts on me and it's always with specific MP3s that just refuse to burn for some reason (on a tangent, is there technology out there that can make MP3s unburnable? Because I can't figure out a reason for it - downloading the song again doesn't always help).
