Batman and Robin.

I thought this film was okay. Not good enough to remember much about it but not as bad as people make out. I might rent it out of the video shop again at some point, to see if I like it any better on a second viewing. What films that most people believe to be really shit do you think are alright, or even good?

The original 60's Batman movie is the best of the lot though. Especially the dolphin scene.

naked as sin (naked as sin), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:35 (twenty-three years ago)

During the ice skating scene in B& R, I remember hoping it was gonna turn into a bad '80s musical like Xanadu.

Any movie that makes me wish it would turn into a bad '80s musical can't be that good. Chances drop further when Alicia Silverstone is listed in the credits.

fractal, just of curiousity, what did you like about it? While I'm pretty sure I think it's horrible (mainly the director and script's fault), I'm not being disingenuous when I say I'm curious what you enjoyed about it. Especially since you're right about the dolphin scene.

A movie I really enjoyed recently that I never heard anybody say anything good about was Trespass. You know you're in luck when Ice-T is the worst actor in the film, cuz that means flava won't be enough to make you the best. It was packed tight with witty touches, funny performances and plot twists that didn't seem too contrived.

My favorite part is when the homeless guy is calling Bill Paxton a honky and a peckerwood (quite deservingly at this point) and Bill reaffirms the fact that he's probably a nice P.C. guy by being unable to yell anything worse back then "you black son of a bitch!" Which shows the difference between acknowledging the race angle of the movie's plot and exploiting it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite liked the camp overacting from Uma Thurman and Arnie's ice quotes. Just think a lot of people wanted a dark Tim Burton type movie. Whereas this went more into the campness of the tv series. It wasn't a brilliant film but it does pass the time and isn't as horribly offensive as people make out.
I really should hire it again so my argument is stronger :( as a lot of this is from my admittedly bad memory.

fractal (fractal), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

the two parts you mentioned are definitely the best. But there's a hell of a lot more in that movie than Arnie (who, btw, was the GOD OF MOVIES in '85 till '88). Try not to vomit when Alfred and Alicia emote. I do agree some of the hate derives from people wanting more Burton (whose two Batfilms I think are pretty overrated themselves).

If you dug Arnie as Mr. Freeze, check out Raw Deal, Total Recall, Commando, Predator and ESPECIALLY The Running Man. As I said, he was the GOD OF MOVIES. Sure ain't now though. You could make an argument that Mr. Freeze is some of the best work he's done in a decade.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:50 (twenty-three years ago)

A lot of those are pretty bad, but Predator is great.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:52 (twenty-three years ago)

actually, I put Predator in as a DECOY! Andrew just fell in my "who doesn't like goofball absurdity in their action films and would rather be watching Sly" trap!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Predator and Commando are top class. He truly was the king of quotes. Fuck classic comedy when you're really drunk with yourfriends saying "Stick around" or "Get to the choppa" in an Arnie voice is much more amusing than quoting lines from Monty Python, The Fast Show or whatever. :)
The best part from the Running Man is Climbing for Dollars and the end when they have the commentary over all the carnage.

fractal (fractal), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Remember when I said I'd kill you last?

I LIED.

Arnie 4 Eva.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:56 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want absurdity, how can you beat the future governor of Minnesota talking about being a goddamn sexual Ty-rannosaur?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 02:57 (twenty-three years ago)

put a goofy-ass wig on him, call him Captain Freedom, make him run a TV aerobics show and team him up with a christmas ornament who shoots out electricity and sings opera.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 03:02 (twenty-three years ago)

The opera guy was the best villain in the Running Man. Especially if his name was Dynamo like I remember it being.

fractal (fractal), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 03:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I really really hated this movie. I don't think the dark Tim Burton thing even holds true because Batman Forever wasn't very dark at all and I thought it was a lot better. Just the horrid combination of so many things I dislike: Alicia Silverstone in a movie besides Clueless, late 90's-era Arnold (Who got top-billing! Anyone else find this weird?), Uma Thurman, etc. The ice-puns might have been funny but the movie drew so much attention to them, like the writers genuinely thought they were clever.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)

B&R was lousy because nearly every other line dearly longed to be remembered as a beer-party catchphrase, thus none of them were.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 09:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Did people just diss Total Recall? Fools!

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I quite liked Batman & Robin, but I thought Arnie was the weakest aspect of it. Arnie is shit. He is only any good in Terminator, Commando, and Predator, and he should not be allowed into any other films. What I did like was the leatherboy camp of BM & R's interplay, plus the way their gaytopia kept getting disrupted by the ladies.

other films I quite like and you don't:

The Avengers

Waterworld

and many more that I can't remember right now.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember enjoying the Alec Baldwin The Shadow quite a bit.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah I did too actually, Batman and Robin is truly awful, it is pretty funny though, the thoughts of Arnie's absurd costume and blue sparkly face (not to mention the snowcone scene) are enough to make me snigger a bit to be honest.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

CHILL OUT!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

I watched this once when it was on cable and I was home sick with a flu/fever. If you're in an altered state of some sort I think it is an insanely funny movie. Especially the ice skating bit, it was fantastic!

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

ICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN JAMES

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

You know when puns get that bad you just want them to go really REALLY ironic and have Arnie just shout "ICE ICE ICE" at Batman for the sheer fucking hell of it.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:41 (twenty-three years ago)

And then have Batclooney say "Will it ever stop? Yo, I don't know, put the top down so my hair can blow..."

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

This movie was so awful it was great. Really, Uma Thurman and the guy who played Bane were the best things about it; Ahnald needed to have an anvil dropped on his head.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 15:05 (twenty-three years ago)

DAN HOW CAN YOU BE SO COLD

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 15:37 (twenty-three years ago)

I found it fruitless and lacking in bloom.

SUNDAE I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE ON YOU BLOUNT

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The biggest problem with the movie is that it was all bark. Definitely tested the viewer's stamena.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a place in hell for me and my friends, clearly.

JUNKIES FROST TAXPAYERS MONEY.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Anybody else think Chris O'Donnell was the best actor in it? My logic for this is that though his assholish demeanor made him the most annoying, his part was defined as an asshole twerp. It's not that he was a bad actor, its that he was CONVINCINGLY a prick. Uma Thurman "implied" camp more than she actually achieved it (never got the idea that there was a smart person hiding under that stupidity, but I'm still under the belief that the only reason she gets respect is that she knew to take her clothes off in ART movies. Heather Graham was taking notes). I'd give Arnie the nod if he didn't fail so horribly at the sentimental scenes. If he was able to pull that off AND the hideous snowcone, ice-fetish sequence (why do both B&R and BATMAN 4 EVA have female molls for the villain that disappear after one scene?) then he'd easily be the best actor in this one.

Clooney was sooo confused. Watch the scene when Robin finds out Alfred is sick and Clooney says "I know." He then proceeds to make THREE completely different facial expressions. If that's not the sign of an actor begging the director for some guidance, I don't know what is. Instead of helping, Schumacher lifted his head from his giant bag of blow and yelled "THAT'S A TAKE!"

I believe that this and the Peacemaker were the last of Clooney's "if I just stick my head down and roll my eyes up I'll be all KINDS of sexy" performances.

While I agree that the flamingness of the film is pretty entertaining, the action scenes (save the ice-skating sequence) are just the most atrocious noise imaginable. I wish Prince had made a soundtrack for this one. And that the characters sang. Especially if somebody rhymed Robin with "throbbin'".

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:22 (twenty-three years ago)

What films that most people believe to be really shit do you think are alright, or even good?

Last Action Hero - 'Good evening, I'm Harold Brownenshwagger...' (or whatever it is). Class.

I am also one of maybe 3 people in the world (judging by the comments every time I see/hear it mentioned) who loved 'The Phantom Menace'. In fact, it was the first film since 1975 (Jaws) that I made a point of going to see twice at the cinema. (And one of only 3 that I have done that for....er the other being Attack Of The Clones haha)

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I like The Phantom Menace a lot. I might have seen it three times.

However, I think AOTC is K-Rub and have only seen it twice. I am the only person in the world who prefers TPM to AOTC. The only sane man in a world gone mad.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I and three of your friends also feel that way, but more because we consider TPM just bad, while AOTC is the worst and most traumatic movie ever made.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven years pass...

my kid is watching this right now. it's so awful. I'm tempted to let him watch the dark knight movies even though they are entirely inappropriate for his age just to cleanse this from his brain.
