I just realised I get to do THINGS I SHOULD DO BEFORE I'M 20!

Yeah maybe I can do it as a joint project with Tom since his birthday is 2 days before mine as far as I remember. So what do I do while I'm still a teenager? Start a band? Get a job?

I don't know.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

*sigh* That was so long ago...

It basically took me until I was 23 to forget I wasn't a teenager any more though.

One nice thing about being a teenager is invincibility. So walk out in front of cars alot and make them stop for you. You have the power!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

important things before 20:

-get laid
-graduate high school
-start college
-drive (if you live in a driving city)
-smoke a cigarette
-get drunk

that was it for me. some people might say 'play a sport' or something which I did but didn't really enjoy. you might want to learn a musical instrument.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

You've already done it all, Ronan. You should have let someone else start this thread.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm... Let's see, Did I have a successful teenagerdome according to Spencer?...

-get laid: nope. I was quite the saint.
-graduate high school: yes, did that.
-start college: yes, did that.
-drive (if you live in a driving city): did that, got in a horrible wreck, failed a driving test, finally drove again.
-smoke a cigarette: never done that to this day.
-get drunk: yes, spring break baby, woo hoo!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, you're only 19? Jesus.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

is it true that the teenagerdome is so high that clouds actually form inside it?

I keep forgetting I'm not a teenager too. when I remember, I feel like I've wasted my life.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

wear baggy pants that hang past yr ass, once you're an adult it just looks sad

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I have done all of Spencer's list yes, some more frequently than others. (I mean I've smoked alot, sadly) Yes maybe I should have left this to someone else but I got carried away cos I just realised no more being a teenager soon.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:50 (twenty-three years ago)

i'd only done 4 out of 6 on spencer's list by the time i was 20, four years later and there's still one i havent quite managed....no, not the getting laid, i'm talkin about driving in the city (its actually less of a necessity if you live in/near a big city in a way, and i still can't imagine myself driving properly which is quite shocking really)

i think the 'starting a band' is a good one...Ronan your equivalent would be you have to DJ in a club or make a shoddy dance track using a computer or whatever kit you can get your hands on

another cliched notion is to get a tatoo/piercing/dye your hair (one of these would do - i wouldve done the hair thing when i was 16 maybe but just couldnt be arsed/too scared of the reaction, or indeed, lack of reaction, heh)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Did I have a successful teenagerdome according to Spencer?

those aren't to be considered my 'standards' for success, just what a lot of teenagers are thinking about.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I achieved two out of six on Spencer's list by 20. Then again graduating and starting college was just part of the plan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

No one's put obvious things like 'learned how to walk' and stuff.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Grown your hair long

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

you're all just trying to make ned feel better now.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Go from being a virgin at 19 to being a parent at 20, it worked for me!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

[I'm assuming he can walk]

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

I had long hair when I was 17, then I got some Jamie Oliver comparisons and that was it for long hair forever.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Thrown out lots of stuff from your childhood and then regretted it.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-three years ago)

other things that might be considered:

drink in all pubs within a 3-5 mile radius of your house
(not important at all but if you take pride in your hedonism/intoxication then maybe something fun, esp. if you've only ever bothered going to one or two pubs in your area so far)

do some graffiti (depends how artistic you are, none of those awful unlegible tag shit, write a useful message somewhere where people will see it - culture-jamming baby, radical)

go on holiday abroad with your mates, no parents and independent of any college or social institution (hmm, not sure i ever did that actually - but you can't really go wrong with such things, as long as the cash is there and you go with the right people)

had your heart broken by a girl or boy (again, debatable whether this is really 'necessary' but i suppose it can be a valuable lesson to learn, can it really be avoided anyway in the long run)

throw a big party at your house (not always feasible, not always successful but something most do between 16 and 20)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:11 (twenty-three years ago)

get caught by the fuzz

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

have mumps and tonsillitis...apparently they're more painful the older you get them

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

get vaccinated against polio and tubercolosis!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Forge a deeper spiritual connection with nature.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

you're all just trying to make ned feel better now.

I'm touched.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Did the holiday, had the heart broken, got caught by the fuzz at way too young an age, worst day of my life and did the massive party several times to the extent where I never want to have one again. Except after Lu Cont/Falcon, my parents are away, it would be madness not to have one when my friend offered to DJ after. Still 15 people max. Not massive.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Injured yourself playing football (this is the only thing that can save me from tw33n3ss) (even though I was only playing football with one of those tiny coca-cola world cup footballs, and tripped up and knocked my tooth out)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

(oh and I'm not saying you should go out and injure yourself, that'd be silly)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never broken a bone.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't either but I still feel like I've wasted my life.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

That's like something you should do before you reach ten.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:20 (twenty-three years ago)

If you want we could arrange to meet and break each others bones and see if it made either of us feel better.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant waste your life, not break a bone.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone here hates me.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I knows those aren't the rules for successful teenaging, Spencer. Just thought I'd see if I was ready to turn 20 yet.

I did do the crazy hair bit. Had bright blue hair which quickly turned green. Yech. To the green, not the blue - it was lovely.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:27 (twenty-three years ago)

No, RJG! So untrue! Take it back!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

OK.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I've done all of these things and I'm still 19! Do I win a prize?

Andrew, Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Just Spencer's list or really everything on the thread?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 20:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I've done NONE of them except learn to drive. Oh well.

Start a band sounds like a fun one Ronan.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyone's homework: Start a band a day for the next week. WE will breed chaos together.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 21:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Me too. I don't think you stop being a teenager till you turn 21, anyway. So, I'm still a teenager.

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, Ronan's only 19!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

I started a band called "band for a day" once, we forgot to record anything :(

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

get a record released.

im serious ronan, get onto it now. start making music too

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

-get laid
-graduate high school
-start college
-drive (if you live in a driving city)
-smoke a cigarette
-get drunk

-Haven't yet.
-Never will.
-Depends on your definition of college.
-Illegally.
-Once.
-More than once.

Hmph.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

i released a record before i learned how to drive, but neither was done before i turned 20.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never broken a bone.

Not worth it. Then again, a summer on the couch did get me started on a film education.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:23 (twenty-three years ago)

wot u need, ronan boy, is to get a bar o soap, and hang it on a rope, y'kno wot i'm sayin?

naked as sin (naked as sin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm 22. Can I still be a teenager please? I refuse to wear a tie to work and I have baggy trousers! Aw please! C'mon! I won't embarrass yas! Lk I knw txt msg scrpt 2! Oh man!

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I think 18 is when you get to old to do many things. At least in America that is when you are offically an adult and you would no longer be tried as a juvenile. I terrible regret not breaking as many laws as I could before I turned 18.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 02:16 (twenty-three years ago)

B-but, you're not even allowed to drink.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 02:17 (twenty-three years ago)

What people should do is drink up until they are 18, then stop until they are 21. That way the fines are minimal if you are caught. (hypothetically)

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 02:20 (twenty-three years ago)

I turn 20 in 6 weeks 3 days!!

I walk and drive (automatic though), I've smoked and drunk and done other things too much, I've graduated and passed 1st year uni with flying colours, I broke a bone in a tricycle accident, started a band and played in front of an audience, had shaggy hair.
No sex or independent holidays or no tattoos/hair dye/piercings, and my heart's been bruised but hardly broken.

Keith McD (Keith McD), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

THROW A MASSIVE FUCKOFF STROP WITH YOUR PARENTS!

Obviously.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

- No
- I wish I could
- Twice
- Never
- Never
- Yes

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 09:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Did it.
Did it.
Did it.
Did it.
Did it (didn't really inhale, though.)
Did it.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 09:24 (twenty-three years ago)

what about oral?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:29 (twenty-three years ago)

ronan. here are five things you should do:

-listen to derek bailey
-listen to cecil taylor unit CD
-listen to albert ayler
-listen to anthony braxton's 'For alto'
-listen to 'proper' electronic music like the xenakis comp on EMF.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:34 (twenty-three years ago)

get your brown wings
eat a few tequila worms
root a whore
get chucked out of a pub
swim naked
go on a dinner date

Has to be done, Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Can soemone make me a list?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:44 (twenty-three years ago)

This is your list, Graham; start in ascending order.

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 10:45 (twenty-three years ago)

[I'm assuming he can walk]

You haven't seen him try.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I terrible regret not breaking as many laws as I could before I turned 18.

You could be being played by Leonardo DiCaprio right now.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 11:38 (twenty-three years ago)

drink in all pubs within a 3-5 mile radius of your house

He lives in Dublin, so this could be dangerous. If he lived in the city center, it'd kill him.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

BRING IT ON! (maybe not)

I've done the massive fuck off strop with parents plenty times, maybe on the day before my birthday I should pretend to run away or something, I've never done that.

Re:making music, I need the soft/hardware, I wanted decks but then I decided to go to London with the few hundred euro I'd saved so it's going to take even longer to get them sadly.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Are your parents going away any time soon? You should totally hold a huge party at their house without their permission - 80's style. Have a kegger and loud music. (I don't even like keggers but I think that sort of party demands one).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:02 (twenty-three years ago)

And do some pimping.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Big pimpin'. Spendin' Gs.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh they're going to South Africa for 3 and a half weeks in february but I think N was right about me having done this stuff. They've been away so many times that the novelty has worn off and the last massive party I had I kinda became them and was thinking "what the fuck are all these idiots doing to my house".

Yeah so now I enjoy the less known benefits like staying in bed, cooking for myself etc etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:05 (twenty-three years ago)

and pass out on the lawn.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

erm I've done that once, I woke up to a beautiful dawn chorus. I have not pimped, maybe that's an idea.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

have sex to REO Speedwagon!

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Or with them...

smee (smee), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:23 (twenty-three years ago)

All Spencer's list bar the driving. Actually, not being able to drive is great. It doesn't matter because I live in London (so *not* a driving city), it gets me out of doing the polite 'Oh I'll not drink this evening and ferry you all about" thing at Christmas, it means I don't have to concentrate on long journeys. Non-drivers of the world unite.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

No way am I uniting with other non-drivers, selfish bunch of swine that they are. Everyone except me should learn to drive and willingly accept the consequent ferry duties.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:46 (twenty-three years ago)

My friends & family keep urging me to learn to drive but why should I when I can have them drive me everywhere? Tis foolish!

smee (smee), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)
