Oh my god, I just remembered this commercial that was on during the NBC Nightly News last night as I was getting ready to go out. It was unreal!

The scene is Old Faithful, and the voice over says something like, "Ever wonder why old faithful remains so regular?" Cut to park ranger pouring Metamucel into the hole. Cut to the geiser erupting. Cut to crowd of people cheering.

I thought that was very very funny.

if the NOT FUNNY thread gets more posts than this one then that would be a pretty poor statement about the collective frame of mind of ILX!

hooray for harry hill as well. Don't see why so many people hate him. Wasn't too keen on TV Burp but I think it was the subject matter (soaps and pop TV) which I know next to nothing about.

Is Kumars at no 42 any good? What about Phoenix Nights?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 22:08 (twenty-three years ago)

As an old English guy, I have to mention Tommy Cooper, Peter Cook, Stan Laurel, Eric Morecambe and Frankie Howerd. Also the Marx Brothers, Buster Keaton and Bilko, though they're a bit less English.

Dexter's Lab (sometimes even funnier than a lot of the so-called adult-orientated animation comedys)
Powerpuff Girls (same again)
Johnny Bravo.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

James Kochalka comics! and I found "Fair Weather" by joe Matt quite amusing.

funny animated:

Ren & Stimpy
Space Ghost: Coast To Coast
Daria
Downtown (not often tho)
Dilbert
that one that was on late night ITV, drawn horrendously on purpose and American (so no, not 2DTV)
The Critic (well i never saw it but i bet it was good)

funny puppets:
Sifl & olly
the Muppets (you can't deny that "Not now Frog, HiiiiiiiiiiiYA!" is not a moment of comedy genius)
Zippy
Nooky Bear
the Wu Tang puppets in that Crank Yankers thing

it is, actually for a while i thought it was just some internet prank thing set up by some crazy guy with too much time on his hands attempting the very blackest of satirical shock-humour...as it turns out it was dreamt up by a Polish jew keen to try and increase the awareness of the holocaust and its implications among children...which i suppose is even less funny ha ha really

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 January 2003 23:54 (twenty-three years ago)

thinking and talking about the following TV shows = funny:

Gilligan's Island, Charles In Charge, Degrassi Junior High, Who's The Boss, Married: With Children, Home Improvement

actual said TV shows = NOT funny

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

home improvement was ok.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:29 (twenty-three years ago)

The PJs

you remember, the claymated Eddie Murphy...

it wasnt actually THAT bad, there were dubious accusations from people like Spike Lee of negative stereotyping of urban black citizens but it continues to mystify me why and how it seems to have vanished off the face of the planet...is it still on Fox in the States? havent seen it on in the UK for over 2 years now

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

home improvement was ok

Tim Allen in prison is funnier

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Is Married With Children supposed to be like it is or what? My Dad finds it absolutely hilarious but I think he thinks it's being purposefully cheesy and tacky but when I see it it does look like an unter-low-budget Roseanne.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:37 (twenty-three years ago)

As far as I recall Married With Children was very funny sometimes. Roseanne was never funny.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:42 (twenty-three years ago)

well i loved Roseanne as a kid and i didnt notice MWC on here until my teens, by which point i wouldve (and did ) despised it so hard to compare for me

the Simpsons parody of MWC in the 'Homer becomes astronaut' says it all

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers is STILL funny i find, i watch the repeats on Paramount now and then...maybe its just the nostalgic revisitation induced, but there always was something likeable about it...its always cool to see Frasier before he got his own gig and observe the differences etc.

another more under-rated funny US show is Ed - real lightweight, even schmaltzy afternoon stuff but it benefits from a creative writing team who can make dramacom about a young lawyer rebuilding his broken life whilst surrounded by kooky smalltowners without resorting to contrived Mcbealesque zaniness

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 00:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers is definitely still funny, though it helps to watch episodes all the way through as it's that kind of scriptwriting and just relying on the characters' schticks can get wearing. Some, like Sam's womanising and Carla's... everything were always a little wearing.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 01:52 (twenty-three years ago)

the pjs was cancelled. i thought it was okay.

i personally enjoy King of the Hill immensely

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 03:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone else (momus?) ever seen the sketch comedy show that the Yatta dance number is from? I'm almost certain it's Japanese. They used to play it on the Asian television station in Oakland, and I always watched all of it and it was hilarious even though I couldn't understand a single word of it. The running sketches with the big-foreheaded-boss-character-talking-to-someone-offscreen were the best!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

My boss was upset with me this morning because I didn't watch it. Then he went on a tirade about the Democratic Post (ie: Washington Post) and how they weren't supportive of the address.

But, nickalicious, did you play the state of the union drinking game? I learned about it on NPR.

It would maul and peck you to death. NOT FUNNY!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 21:12 (twenty-three years ago)

the chickenbear would do no such thing. He would merely ponder aloud why you thought he might maul and peck you to death and wonder who this reflected more negatively on, you or him.

The Fax Machine Beat-Down from Office Space is one of the funniest moments of anything ever. All I have to do is summon the memory to my mind and I laugh quite hysterically.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

There is a quiet guy in my office called Gareth Keenan. I find this funny. He doesn't.

The Chicken Bear and I are off to the pub now to get better acquainted. I was meant to be meeting a boy. Alone. But I'm sure he won't mind the company.

Night night.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Roseanne was one of the great mainline sitcoms from about the start of season 2 to early in the penultimate season. It went downhill worse than anything ever, I think, and the last series was unspeakably bad.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for the memory, nickalicious. I just spit tea over my keyboard and screen when the image returned to my mind.

two years pass...
Yes, Preston Sturges!

One of the funniest episodes of "Cheers" was on TV Land last night. Frasier and Lilith's bachelor and bachelorette parties. Great writing from top to bottom, with sooo many hilarious lines. Frasier's quoting "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" is one of the best things ever.
