In this case that after getting torn apart by the FBI's cointelpro particularly it's "bad-jacketing" of foax as cop-agents when they really weren't and it's false letters etc. everyone realized that you never accuse someone of being a cop unless you are dead sure you can prove it because otherwise it just makes things worse.

Translated this to ILX and we get the simple dictum -- don't call someone a troll or a 40 yr. old man or whatever unless you can PROVE it. We've had our share of odd ppl. who livened things up regardless of their reality. ramosi (i think i called him made-up once, but as a sort of compliment), gale, etc. I actually thought CJ who is now a regular was made up at first, for many of the same reasons people currently distrust becky -- *sparkly* emoticon :(ish stream...of...consciousness chatroom speak.

I must say that I tend to assume that everyone is real unless I can prove otherwise. If someone suggested I wasn't real I'd get offended (who wouldn't?) and that for me is reason enough to take the line I do. As for the word "troll", well, most interweb slang is pretty innocuous, but CAN WE FIND A NEW WORD FOR THIS PLEASE?

Thinking of Becky as a put-on is charitable and amusing. If the Becky that posts is an apt portrait of the person, then I have nothing good to say about that person. As a put-on, at least some imagination is at work.

I check the IPs of anyone I'm suspicious of (exception: anonymous asking-for-advice posts where I respect the poster's wishes). I don't always or usually say who it is but it's nice to know in case things kick off. If they've disguised their IP then they're going to so much effort we might as well take them seriously.
