Post a link to the introductions thread so people can get a feel for what the regulars are into.

I see no point in lurking for a long time before posting, but then my first post was about Colourbox and not Analingus.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 29 January 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Do not refer to people by their first name unless they say it is OK to do so.

Remember that 'a lot' is two words.

Do not try to pick up ILXOR-speak in order to fit in. Languages only evolve by immigrants saying 'this language sucks, let's slash the seats',

Don't complain that everyone is cliquey and unfriendly. Even if it's true it will make everyone hate you even more.

If you don't get a joke, it's probably not funny.

Remember that a lot of things are only on here because everyone is assuming that someone else must like them.

Don't make too many threads just for the sake of it. No one knows how many too many is.

Less 'meta' is betta.

Bring a little bit of analingus to everything you do.

If you don't get a joke, it's probably not funny.

Hm. Well, it's not funny to you, but maybe the fact you don't get it is funny? To other people? Who are mean? And will call you names? Maybe.

GSoH does not necessarily mean GSoH.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 30 January 2003 00:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tom - I agree with Martin. As I implied above, if someone is behaving "badly," admonitions not to aren't going to help him, while paradoxically they might inhibit the person who is behaving well. I don't think warning someone of all the ways they could get screwed up here is a good intro to the board. Seems to me the FAQ alreay takes care of starting new threads and how to find out about ILx slang, and you can always expand those sections slightly. Also, you could add a short, rudimentary HTML primer about italics and bold and the like. (For those of you who don't know, HTML stands for "Horny Teen Married Lesbians," sort of like the spam in your inbox suddenly coming to life and producing a great pop record, and they're married to the sons of exiled Nigerian presidents but remain horny and dissatisfied and eager to meet me, though ready to confront me with an inescapable truth that my wives or lovers have been too polite to mention: size and stamina do matter.) You could possibly change the title to "FAQ and advice to newcomers." Beyond that, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. You may be too close to this thing to see how well it's working. You've got a core of decent, sane people, and there always seems to be at least one of whom is around to help anyone who runs into trouble.

Which isn't to say that chatrooms don't pose dangers. I know from my own experience that if someone is trying to pick a fight, and I find myself intervening more than once supposedly to try and talk the guy down, then something inside me is looking for a fight too, and I've got to back off and look at my own problems. But that info doesn't belong in advice to newcomers, and is more likely to scare someone than to help him.

advice for old ilxers: don't get so worked up about new ilxers :-)

ron (ron), Thursday, 30 January 2003 02:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

Frank is spot on again. But Nick's (sorry, Dastoor's) post is so funny I have completely withdrawn my objection to this notion, as long as all the advice is like that.

This must go into the FAQ immediately.

Charge right in and call everybody "insufferable cunts". Well, it worked for me...

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 January 2003 14:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't assume that if people don't respond to your threads or posts that they are intentionally ignoring you. Maybe they just aren't interested.

I agree with the just-jump-right-in faction, except that I also think it is good to do a search first if you are thinking of posting a new thread. But there's no need to lurk for a year or read a hundred threads before posting.

ILX is both cliquish and welcoming, in my experience. No one here has ever met me in person, as far as I know (with the exception of one rare celebrity poster on ILM, and one poster I invited to ILM), yet people started responding to my posts pretty early on, and some seemed to go out of their way to be friendly.

I wonder if it’s to the point where an early ilxor could veritably pwn a newbie by saying “I’ve been on this site longer than you’ve been alive”

He's more about delighting in how shitty things are though tbf.

i'm just assuming the "ilx sucks" crew are actually reading the politics threads? in which case my advice is don't even open those threads, talking about politics on the internet is a losing game
