so, whats with ivor cutler? i think mark radcliffe must have played something that he'd done on their show back in the day, thats how i got into him. ed is rocking ivor too, it is kinda that goons axis. i bought 'life in a scotch sitting room vol 2'. is there a vol 1? what other recordings has he done? is he still alive? what is his story? does he do live stuff?
and how much truth is there in his stories? if anyone knows a site to link to about him, please post it, because i think that a lot of people around here would be into it if they havent already heard of him. he's a sort of scottish comedian by the way. he purports to tell autobiographical stories of his life growing up in the 40s 50s whatever, in a wonderful droll and mesmerising voice. also listening to him comforted my girlfriend through a sickness (guardia) induced hour of darkness in russia, and thats good enough reason to give him max respect in my book.

He's a poet, and didn't we have a thread on him like last week?

I've got no common sense
And neither has nobody else!
I put my brains on the table
And squidge them about with a fork!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:27 (twenty-three years ago)

'Cause I've got no common sense!
And neither has nobody esle! [sic]

Short version: yes he's still alive, yes he's still brilliant, search everything but especially _Ludo_ and the _Peel Sessions_ 12" and anything with "Go and Sit Upon the Grass" on it, there never was a _Scotch Sitting-Room Vol. 1_ which is part of the joke.

He put together one of those Blast First discs of his favorite music a couple of years ago, which turned me on to some wonderful things, like Albert Ammons' "Shout for Joy."

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 30 January 2003 04:39 (twenty-three years ago)

He has a wonderfully effective little monologue at the end of Robert Wyatt's 'Rock Bottom', it's the perfect ending for a great record.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 30 January 2003 05:05 (twenty-three years ago)

He doesn't easily fit into any categories but he's definitly genius.

tigerclawskank, Thursday, 30 January 2003 11:27 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
You are the centre of your little world and I am of mine.
Now and again we meet for tea, we’re two of a kind.

This is our universe, cups of tea.

We have a beautiful cosmos, you and me.
We have a beautiful cosmos.

What do we talk of whenever we meet? Nothing at all!
You sit with a sandwich I look at a roll.

Sometimes I open my mouth, and shut it.

We have a beautiful cosmos, you and me.
We have a beautiful cosmos.

You are the centre of your little world and I am of mine.

We have a beautiful cosmos, you and me.
We have a beautiful cosmos.

IMHO Ivor Cutler is the single greatest Scotsman alive, the website has a lot of info on his life but somehow details are still sketchy on his personality/motivations. I saw him play a few months ago and he is soooo old and creaky but still managed to be fantastic and endearing. My friends & I used to see him around London a lot (he lives in Tufnell Park) If you meet him call him Mr Cutler ("I just don't like people Ivor-ing me when I don't know them") he may give you some small gold or silver stickers with odd sayings printed on them. or he may say something like "I like your teeth" like he did to my mate. Cherish him, because he is very, very old and fragile, and may stop performing/writing soon.

mzui, Sunday, 15 August 2004 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

He lives in Tufnell Park? YOU ARE BLOODY KIDDING!!!!!!!???? I'm going to spend all of my free time stalking him now. His little books are great but the records are kind of difficult to get hold of. Nevertheless, it's nice to imagine things (like advertisements) being read out in that genius dry Scots accent.

The ground meets the sky over the hill.
I was told by a sparrow with a lump on its head.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 16 August 2004 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If Strange Fruit or whoever deals with the BBC's archive were smart they'd do a Box set of his BBC session material, there's a ton of it and it's all great. Mind you, it'd only sell about 40 copies, cuh!

mzui, Monday, 16 August 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I would buy at least two copies. Ahhh, the sweet droning of an elderly gent's harmonium.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

FOPP had Jammy Smears, Velvet Donkey and Dandruff for £5 each recently. Worth picking up, especially love the track Fremsley from Dandruff. A sweet story of befriending a sparrow and then taking him home and eating him for tea with chips.

mms (mms), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:41 (twenty-one years ago)

AGGH I bet the Covent Garden FOPP doesn't. And their bloody site has no non-Flash version, the fools.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 16 August 2004 09:47 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend has seen him walking in Finsbury Park, if that's any help for the stalking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Was he born looking old? He looks ancient in 'Magical Mystery Tour' and that must have been filmed in 67/68.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

The illustrations in the book I have (Glasgow Dreamer) make him look like a little old man as a baby. There is also a picture of a gentleman with a 50 foot pisher.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 16 August 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed, he was almost certainly a geezer-baby.

mzui, Monday, 16 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My father once had intercourse with a polar bear in Canada.
If you ask him about it, he will deny this,
not completely astonished.

"Canada!" he will shout,
in a restrained manner,
playing for time.

OleM (OleM), Monday, 16 August 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to do a dance/ravey cover version of "I'm going in a field", back in the day. Heck it would have stormed the place. This was around the time of the "It's a fine day" and so on.

Do you think Ivor would have sanctioned it, or would I have to do it posthumously?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't say things like that! You rotter.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to see him around London a lot (he lives in Tufnell Park)

Wow, I saw him at in Tufnell Park Road a few months ago, didn't realised he actually lived in Tuffers!

I'm doubly sad reading Liz on this thread

Yeah. I'm so not doing the ravey tribute mentioned upthread now. For that reason.

Why no news in the papers?

because we here at scotland's leading quality newspaper have only just found out about it - from the guardian obit, i think. fucking hell. we'll run something tomorrow, certainly.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

i can only assume that his family kept things quite quiet for a while, or there was just some strange breakdown in communication.

the, umm, news section on ivorcutler.org is a little behind the times too :(

ten months pass...
Revive!

On first listen (just finished a record called Velvet Donkey) I must say, this guy made some strange strange music. Favorite line: "The sleepy old snake lifts its sleepy old head and gives me a smiiiiiiiiiillllleeeeeee." Cool stuff!

This is a very sad thread. :(

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 26 January 2007 05:15 (nineteen years ago)

One of my Tower finds was the collection of his earliest efforts, An Elpee and Two Epees. Very glad I am of that as well.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 26 January 2007 05:23 (nineteen years ago)

I just listened to Egg Meat tonight, after spotting it on my playlist.

patita (patita), Friday, 26 January 2007 06:18 (nineteen years ago)

I only have Dandruff, but am always delighted when something by Mr Cutler comes round on shuffle. It punctuates music so well, and never gets tired. Current favourite line, from Fremsley: "'You saved my life', sighed Fremsley. 'For better things', I replied, and took him home and ate him for supper with chips".

Bill A (Bill A), Friday, 26 January 2007 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

I recently heard a story about Ivor, which I'm not going to repeat here for fear of besmirching his good name, but let's just say that he still had an eye for the ladies long after he'd got his free bus pass

Tom D. (Dada), Friday, 26 January 2007 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

seven years pass...

mr cutler always cheers me up. there used to be mp3s from his radio sessions floating about - shoe hangers, sharks &c. - but there's no sign of them now, anyone know where i can get them?

ogmor, Friday, 21 February 2014 01:15 (twelve years ago)

There's a bit in "I Got No Common Sense" where he sings
"I got no common sense
And neither has nobody esle"
obv written "else" wrong on the page he's singing from and sings it anyway
I think about this every now and then and it always makes me smile

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 21 February 2014 01:44 (twelve years ago)

there was a great clip of him performing 'shoplifters' on one of those recent danny baker/decades music progs

Ward Fowler, Friday, 21 February 2014 09:07 (twelve years ago)

someone asked about those mp3s on twitter the other day

if you go to archive.org and find the archived version of the website you can download them

xxp

conrad, Friday, 21 February 2014 11:09 (twelve years ago)

thanks anagram that's great! so many great songs.

ogmor, Friday, 21 February 2014 15:03 (twelve years ago)

Greatest Scotsman that ever lived I believe, and I often wonder if his rather peculiar and fantastic accent (Eastern European Jewish Heritage meets 30s Glasgow with a dash of received pronunciation) died with him.

MaresNest, Friday, 21 February 2014 16:00 (twelve years ago)

The way he pronounces 'for..k' in 'I've Got No Common Sense' is lovely

MaresNest, Friday, 21 February 2014 16:04 (twelve years ago)

Jumping and pecking are the birds
Jumping and pecking
Way down on the plain
They are eating the seeds of the melon and cucumber...

Eats like Elvis, shits like De Niro (Tom D.), Friday, 21 February 2014 16:40 (twelve years ago)

I saw his last concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and blubbed like a little girl at the end.

MaresNest, Friday, 21 February 2014 16:52 (twelve years ago)

two years pass...

I think the contributions of Phyllis King to Jammy Smears, Dandruff and Velvet Donkey are key to those being his best albums. Particularly on Jammy Smears. Her bits, brief as they are, are bright and whimsical and give context to Ivor's darker abstractions. She basically didn't do anything else other than this did she? I just found out they were in a relationship for 40 years.

she wrote and illustrated two children's books
