And then you read articles saying that people who get more than 8 hours of sleep die younger! aaah! I wish I knew the answer.

As far as I recall, there are two opposing scientific camps, one of which argues that on average we sleep too much and the other that we don't get enough. I think one is American and the other is European.

I generally need ten hours. I am a very sleepy person, especially after eating, while riding in cars and after swimming. Yesterday I ate two ham sandwiches and I nearly fell into a coma.

My best sleep advice is: have a good bed, go to bed before midnight, and sleep for as long as you need so that you can wake up without an alarm.

Well, I have a good bed.

Sleep is wonderful, but I am an enthusiast. In my limited experience, I've found that exercising regularly will help me feel less tired overall. But, of course, that takes effort.

Sorry rainy - that reads like one of the worst come-ons ever.

??

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 30 January 2003 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

N, I didn't read it that way.

when i used to exercise, i always had more energy too. but now i'm nearly narcoleptic. i slept directly through my first class this morning, and don't even remember getting up and walking halfway across the room to turn off the alarm. slightly worrying...

oops! i apparently have 2 names?

stolenbus (stolenbus), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:23 (twenty-three years ago)

going to bed before midnight does help...i find i get about the same amount of sleep, but i'm up earlier so it feels like i'm awake more.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 30 January 2003 03:26 (twenty-three years ago)

oh dear, its 430am and i havent gone to bed yet. i have to get up at 630. and i dont see sleep coming soon...

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 30 January 2003 04:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Gareth, you would have to trump me. I thought I was insane for leaving myself with 3 hours of sleep two nights this week. And then I had 5 last night and then got to work to discover I wasn't supposed to be there today.

Rainy - sorry. Looking back on it now my follow up post looks weirder than my first one.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 30 January 2003 10:04 (twenty-three years ago)

The more I sleep the more I want/need to sleep. Graham, perhaps you sort of reminded your body what it was missing with this unusual before-midnight sleepage?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 30 January 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the fact that after losing a couple hours sleep last night, I was more or less doomed to a morning of rushing to work and a day of feeling anti-social and somewhat grumpy. Human finitude be damned.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm feeling terribly sleepy as it is, alas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Wowwee zowwee! I generally sleep 3-5 hours a night (except on the weekends when I'm "sleeping one off").

I just don't get very tired...should I be worried about that?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe one day you will just collapse, Sleeping Beauty stylee, and sleep for a hundred years...

smee (smee), Friday, 31 January 2003 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I managed not to sleep at all last night. I feel not as dead as I should be. How odd. Although this morning I felt like crying when I had to move. OK I had been weeping for most of the NIGHT with insomnia but never mind. I shall be trying to spend tonight sleeping though. Mmmm floppy dogg... mmm white bear... bugger my RACKING COUGH and PAINFUL THROAT chiz I am going to the fecking doctors.

Sarah (starry), Friday, 31 January 2003 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, after turning up to work by mistake yesterday I resolved to go to bed early last night because, mid afternoon nap nothwithstanding, I still needed to catch up a lot. But then I went to bed at 4.30 in the morning again and only got 2 and a half hours sleep. Imagine my horror when I got to work for 8 and discovered I was on the 1-8 shift. And I've got to work this weekend.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

bacon lettuce and tomato sandwiches always make me feel sleepy.
