I know its aggravating. Whats up with the marriage penalty? My wife and I did our taxes a few days ago and we have to pay them. We did our taxes using about 15 different scenarios. If we had donated $50000 to various charitable organizations we would have had a $5000 return. Instead we donated $100 worth of clothing to the Goodwill and ended up only having to pay $20 less! Whoopee! I'm going Willie Nelson style from now on.

It's not really the oil, it's that SUV's are cash cows for US automakers, and are, in fact, the only thing keeping them afloat right now.

The theory behind the "marriage penalty" is that when two people get married they pool their resources, allowing them to get by on less money (to some extent this is true). So if they can get by on less money, they can afford to pay more in taxes.
