Hello to you all. I've been knocking about here for six months or so.

I live in Minneapolis, MN.

Hi!

(I made an awfully ungracious entrance into ILM back then, too, eeuughh...)

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

minnesota crew represent

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:34 (twenty-three years ago)

apparently london gets more snow in a day than minneap gets all year. NOT THAT I AM COMPLAINING.

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow! So many lurker/poster conversions lately.
Welcome, g. cannon!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a plague!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo, g. Who's playing First Ave. this week?

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm gonna hop on this one to offer an even more belated hello. I've been posting since August, and lurking since before that for a while, but never said hello. Hello. Maybe NOW I can be an underrated poster.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody good! (eh I'll actually look maybe)

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, if is the people-who-should-have-introduced-themselves-months-ago-but-didn't thread...

Hello!

I'm new really too, but I've been posting for a few months now and lots of you know me anyway from Another Place. I live in Edinburgh, and I love cute cat pictures. Oh, and I have a blog too.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 30 January 2003 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll get on the band-wagon too and say hi.
Hi!
Been lurking for ages, I'm really one of the Ask a Drunk crowd, but new horizons and all that.

kirsten k (kirsten), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Kirsten, I like your mittens.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like Newbies Anonymous. I think recent events have reminded people that it is possible to piss off real people on here and people are becoming scared of offending people. Hello Cannon, hello lurkers, hello recent additions. You have nothing to fear except the temptation to post "*insert backslapping in-crowder here* you fucking wanker" or similar. Which can be overwhelming at times. And even then it will probably be forgotten quite soon under this huge mass of daily rotating text.

We all get into flame wars, we all post things we regret, we all overstep the line occasionally. But we all post, thats the main thing. Keep going. Try to be yourself. Which isn't easy with nothing but a QWERTY keyboard, but hey give it a go. Don't be intimidated. I'm not the brightest spark on here and frequently post lengthy ill-informed rants about things I don't understand (such as this one). But thats the best way to go. At worse you'll be ignored. At best someone will put you right and you'll have learned something. Treat your opinions as ideas and your posts as being open to debate, not doctrine. You're not right, they're not right.

As an exercise in how bad trolldom can become, I heartily recommend going to one of the dedicated abuse chatrooms on MSN Messenger. You get entire rooms of trolls patting each other on the back about who can be the most offensive. These people stay in there for HOURS. Dreadful and depressing. The psychology is pitiful. The first thing that comes into my mind is "What are these people backlashing against? How did you end up at the conclusion that the best way to spend your days is screaming abuse to no-one in particular where very few people will see it and even less will care?". Maybe its like self harm or bulemia - a desperate release. Behind every troll is something fucked up, ugly and worrying.

This place is a hell of a lot more civilised than most other places on the net. The "Heath Ledger" boards on Greenspun were more offensive. Heath Ledger! And remember Anarchy? The fact that there are so many people on here and it manages to stay away from being over-run by trolls is a minor miracle. All those random googlers, so little abuse. Be thankful this place has moderators. The old AAD had none and when the trolls came, we could do nothing about it.

Wanna look?

Ramble, ramble, ramble . . . . see what I've done? Posted a load of shit thats taken me a while to write and passed the time. Will people read it? Fuck knows, probably not. Do I care? No. Do you care? No. Whats my point here? Fuck knows. Text, text, text. . . . . (trails off)

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

hi lara, i love your shoes and the way you say "pheNOMenal!"

kirsten k (kirsten), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

God, I feel like I *know* you or something...

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:15 (twenty-three years ago)

it's very strange indeed. for some reason, i can just imagine you saying "pheNOMenal!" or "hiLARious!" and in my imagination, it's so great.

kirsten k (kirsten), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"It's so GREAT" tee hee.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey - do you reckon RJG is going to tell us both to fuck off?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

i highly doubt it...but if he does, you're going to have to be the one to slap him. you're closer!

kirsten k (kirsten), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm so bad with names... Let's see... There's kephm, stolenbus, kirsten k, g. cannon... Hello all!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris V, this isn't the musical thread!
But, carry on... :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

The Minnesotans are representin' because they're in the midst of the Cabin Fever Season.

Cool sentiments, Lynskey.

Hello new people; mmmmmm, fresh BRAINS.

Lara is officially my fave new poster for the stunning, stunning backup given recently (cheers for that). I can pretty much take anything said about me (have to, or else reviews of things I do would be angst-making) but attack or bully my peeps and I *will* take umbrage.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Hullo to Kirsten, hullo to G. Cannon (er, again, I think). :-) And yeah, Lara is pretty darn cool too!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

How *new* is new?

I've been posting for a good while. It's only got clinical in the last month or so.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:33 (twenty-three years ago)

he's just adorable. *SIGH*
hello to sarah mclusky and ned raggett!

kirsten k (kirsten), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:34 (twenty-three years ago)

don't fuck off.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Suzy, I'd only have backed you up if you were RIGHT RIGHT RIGHT, which you so obviously were. What thread was that btw?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

*swoons*

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, that kate-bush-over-the-phone oneliner still has me going.

Hi Ned!

Minnesota is constant cabin fever season as far as I can tell.

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

g. cannon, where are you in Mpls?

I am now 4000 miles from St. Louis Park.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:49 (twenty-three years ago)

right now i'm in my cube at the UofM (go afscme clerical 3800!). I live near Loring Park (and jesus is downtown a draaag)

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

g.cannon (gcannon), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't see no boa!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:04 (twenty-three years ago)

So there's Jeebus, wafting out from the Basilica for a bit of late-night action with the dentists and other closeted members of the prof classes who cruise Loring Park.

Lara, they did the snakes in Genesis...

My theory of Mpls is it's fun, but if you lined up all the fun back-to-back you'd have eleven months left of time to kill in any given year, hence not enough fun. Vietnamese food, however, is massive plus. London has one un-fun month; it's called JANUARY.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

But it's almost done, Suzy! Then there can be fun again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

hello g.cannon

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:06 (twenty-three years ago)

no no people the joke is that JCSuperstar is playing in downtown mpls right now.

This is my second shitey January; last year I was Gastroenteritis Girl, bleurgh.

stolenbus (stolenbus), Thursday, 30 January 2003 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd been wondering about this--aparently missed nettiquette 101. So, um, yeah, hi all.

M, Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think anyone minds if people don't introduce themselves formally, M.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

You know cannon, super cheap crazy wrestling might get me to drive the 455 miles that it is from my house to downtown Minny, IF I WERE BONKERS! I have been meaning to go down that way a lot more. I have friends who go down every couple of months. It's been almost 11 years for me (Lollapalooza 92)!

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 30 January 2003 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello g. cannon - Minnesota is one of my more favorite states - so I know I'll like you, too *grin*

And hello again, kephm and stolenbus and hello for the first time to ailsa and Celeste! (And to anyone else I might have missed while skimming this thread - my most sincere and humble apologies and if you'll just point out my mistake I'll say nice things to you, too.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 31 January 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey everyone. A former Minneapolitan myself here--used to work at First Avenue even--who loves having been raised there but nonetheless thinks Suzy's 11-months-left description is (unfortunately) pretty on target. Good place anyway, of course. Anyway, welcome!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 31 January 2003 07:53 (twenty-three years ago)

g.cannon, g-kit... there's a pattern forming. maybes.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:16 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, and kephm ended a sentence thus "ive been online since the mid 80's, so i know how to play yo" you have started a cult!

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth (gareth), Friday, 31 January 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I introduced myself a couple of months ago on ILM but haven't done so here even though I've been posting for a while. And I know that some of you don't go over there.

I'm 34, live in North London with my girlfriend and nearly 2 year old son.

So belated hello.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello, James Ball!
What is your son named?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Young Master Ball, of course.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi Sarah.

He's called Dylan.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the name Dylan.
While we're on the topic, what's your son named, nickalicious?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:30 (twenty-three years ago)

hi!

Christopher (Christopher), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

That's a good first name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:51 (twenty-three years ago)

not as good as G.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:54 (twenty-three years ago)

shit yes

g.cannon (gcannon), Friday, 31 January 2003 15:55 (twenty-three years ago)

We thought of 'G' but decided against it.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

bet you're kicking yourself now.
it's hella cool when people say "yo, G" to you.

g-kit (g-kit), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:11 (twenty-three years ago)

They do that anyway.

No, not really.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 31 January 2003 16:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello James Ball!

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never properly introduced myself either. I know a few people already from the Other Place. I'm Madeleine. I'm from Leicester. i occasionally post, but I never enjoy the experience very much.

Madeleine (Madeleine), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello Madeleine. Why do you not enjoy the experience of posting?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 31 January 2003 18:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello, hello, hello

jel -- (jel), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi jel! (Actually, that is a sincere greeting, as I don't think we've ever exchanged any witty banter threads.)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Hello. My name is Sarah McLusky. Sometimes (when I forget) I have a different name that is very similar. I like cats, socks, and guitars. I always talk about myself and my cats and my bf and music and socks and... ok, I talk a hell of a lot.
I've been posting here since (hmmm... can't remember... October maybe?) but have never properly introduced myself.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 January 2003 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Hi and welcome to g. cannon, Celeste, ailsa, Madeleine (I lived in Leicester all through the '90s). I'll welcome Sarah too, though we have already met (on board, anyway).
