Canada's Comedy Reputation, overrated?

Okay, let's face it, for every Kids in the Hall, we've got an Air Farce.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's not forget Brian Adams.. that's comedy gold right there.

Christopher (Christopher), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike Bullard is not funny.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:25 (twenty-three years ago)

I was recently very impressed by Brent Butt.

I think one of the things that kills CanCom is that there's a dearth of comedy clubs, attributable to many things (the dominance of Yuk Yuk's, the scattered population, extremely unimaginative TV execs, etc) so a lot of them wind up working mainly corporate gigs, which really kills a comic's drive to be brilliant.

For every Made in Canada, there's a Holmes Show.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 January 2003 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

COD Co/This Hour Has Twenty Two Minutes, SCTV, most of SNL...

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Bizarre, Bette, Smith & Smith, most of SNL...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike Myers

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Lloyd Mansbridge

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Red Green! How could I forget him (the male half of Smith & Smith)

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Puppets Who Kill, oh is that show not funny in the worst way, also Buzz, and any other original Comedy Network Programming.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Lieography?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Tank MacNamera

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 30 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Corner Gas has restored my faith that Canada can actually do good half-hour comedies. The show is smart, funny, and the people are real...not beauty queens or (for the most part) caricatures. I probably relate to the show more because I came from that area--close enough, anyhow--but I know people like all of the characters on the show.

The part in the first episode where Brent "convinces" Hank to end his protest is ten of the best seconds of TV anywhere.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

but I know people like all of the characters on the show.

People may LIKE them, but what I meant to say was that I know people who ARE like each of the characters on the show.

ps. Hi Huk!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't believe that there is an unfunny Canadian alive, based on what I've seen.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

They're just so...FUNNY!

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Red Green show...

For every subpar Canadian show, there's a far more subpar American equivalent (in this case, Home Improvement)

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Although, that show "Buzz"..

Hmmm, kinda hard to find a worse American equivalent.

Then again, the Jesus Pimp skit was chuckleworthy.

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Sean!

Eric Peterson as the father is great. The mother (I can never remember her name) is wonderful too. Everyone else is sort of okay, but they're sort of okay enough in a good way, because it's such an ensemble.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

During this past Xmas, the entire front section of a poster/hobbies & crafts store inside a shopping mall was all Red Green merchandise. Red Green calendars, Red Green Monopoly.. it was frightening.

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, but red green is just a generational thing. i think you have to be at least 40 to find him funny. although i'll say he comes up with some funny stuff every show, eh?

donut christ's uncle and aunt in vancouver island (donut), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

red green blows. let's play some xbox.

donut christ's cousin in nanaimo (donut), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, honestly, Red Green himself isn't terrible. The most hideous element in that show is that extreme faux-fey nerdy guy who makes my internal orgams shudder.

donut christ (donut), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Who played a "heartthrob" on another CTV show Traders.
Red Green has it's moments, but Smith & Smith is dated horribly.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Newsroom basically negates all horrible Canadian comedy shows. It is probably the funniest show ever.

La Monte (La Monte), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Canada is really like this bizarre alternate universe, isn't it?

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

my folks LOVE Red Green, altho i don't know if they can watch it anymore now that they've moved to tennessee..

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you serious with the Newsroom? Ken Finkleman is a Grade A hack.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Made In Canada was funnier if still shoddy.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Newsroom had the guts to actually satirize rather than the tongue-in-cheek lionizing of The Newsroom.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That should be: Made In Canada had the guts to actually satirize rather than the tongue-in-cheek lionizing of The Newsroom.
