anyone have trouble getting into work today? a few drops of snow and total chaos.

the waterloo and city line is dine due to the central line accident of last week, so there was no point me going to Bank, and the roads were jammed anyway, so i got the 141 up to manor house to pick up the piccadilly line there. but there were huge queues and they werent letting anyone in. waited around for about 15 minutes, then they said the piccadilly line was shut westbound as far as kings cross, and that there had been a fire at wood green. so had to come out of there. metro says bakerloo and jubilee also out of service in addition to piccadilly, central and waterloo and city

got the 341 down as far as canonbury and tried to get the silverlink, but that was vitually suspended and they said to leave. walked along as far as highbury&islington, but as i got there i rang my boss again to say there were serious delays. he told me to take the day off (i think it comes out my holiday allowance tho)

why is this country so crap at dealing with this?

I don't think it's the country as a whole, just London and the SE. I swear to god it was NEVER this bad anywhere else I've lived.

It took me four hours to get from Sheffield to Chesterfield on a bus once when snow all but blocked the main route between the two, but still it was more organised (and much worse weather) than my journey home last night. My route in today was a comparative breeze, overland to Harrow from Marylebone sailed through, then a wee wait for an Uxbridge train. I'm still leaving early though.

Jeez, that sounds rubbish. I got up with a horrible hangover and sat on a nice bus that only got me into work slightly late. God bless the W3, for it travels up and down the steep hills of Crouch End and Alexandra Park through rain or snow. Maybe this is because Haringey actually grit the roads, which my own domicillary borough of Islington do not. Damn their eyes.

Trains in from SE London were absolutely fine. There have been so many instances in the last year or so that make me glad I don't have to rely on the Tube.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 31 January 2003 10:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, you crazy Londoners.

Tag, Friday, 31 January 2003 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

well we only get 'proper' snow 3 days out of every 2 years on average - so they can never really know how to deal with it, and it probably doesnt qualify as a major problem for them to spend money sorting out because it is in reality a rare occurrence...unfortunately this time it has coincided with an even rarer suspension of an entire tube line (Central) which has obviously made things a lot worse

but i've been at home all week (albeit not doing much work therefore not earning any money which is baaaaaad) :)

South Tyneside council didn't bother gritting the roads yesterday, I suspect b/c snow wasn't forecast 'till saturday. Driving home last night was, er, "interesting"....

a fire at Wood Green? oh no, where?

I actually got up this morning *thinking* that i was going to have trouble getting to work, because I heard on the radio that there was travel chaos caused by snow evrywhere (speshly at Stansted apparently) and that in Lincolnshire police were telling ppl not to travel unless it was absolutely necessary. When I finally looked out the window I saw there was NO SNOW AT ALL, which was a disappointment of sorts. Not only do Ox City Council grit roads, but someone had even gritted the concourse in front of our office door. Whether this is something to do with the shareholders' visit this afternoon or not I can but speculate.

domicillary? what a brilliant word. I'm going to start using it now.

What Matt DC said: I set off from home at 8:50, my 9:00 train was on time (there was plenty of space) and I got into work at 9:20 after a little detour along the Thames (which looked beautiful this morning).

Tim (Tim), Friday, 31 January 2003 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Haha you may criticise but the thing we Irish people say after a spell in London is "yeah the transport's amazing, so reliable, and they STILL complain about it".

You do pay for the quality though, it's way more expensive than ours, if you can compare prices between two totally different services.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 31 January 2003 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

> more expensive that ours

Our what Ronan? We only have buses and a DART (light railway that serves the coast). When the Luas is built it'll be a different story blah blah.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 31 January 2003 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah our transport system I meant, anyway there's no point in making up stuff like a "DART", they all know it's horses and riding dogs over here.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 31 January 2003 11:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah and I forgot to mention the SKY-SHIP-SHUTTLE.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 31 January 2003 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Riding dogs? Are you all leprechauns then?

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 31 January 2003 11:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan is talking about the single man's average Saturday night in Dublin.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

We only have buses and a DART (light railway that serves the coast).

What, one of these things?

Similar but the sides of ours are higher to prevent people from getting splashed when the tide is high.

gareth (gareth), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah it's like that with a pot of gold in every carriage, I'd appreciate if noone could start infringing on the rights of the leprechaun community on this thread with offensive "begorrah" taunts.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

"Bejaysus" should be fine though.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:11 (twenty-three years ago)

URGENT AND KEY - do they provide separate compartments for you to put your pigs in (so you dont have to carry them under your arm during the journey?)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(hope i didnt overstep the mark there...)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course they do, what do you think we are, barbarians????

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, your £4 has been despatched.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 31 January 2003 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I was fine today, apart from one bus which drove STRAIGHT PAST ME without even being full-up, perhaps they thought I was an EVIL ZOMBIE in my pre-cupofechinaceatea state... fair enough.

I now regret flicking the 'V's as the bus zoomed past and also shouting* WELL THANKS FOR NOTHING YOU MORON at the retreating back of the number 3.

* FSVO shouting - voice not working v well today...
