...but I'm young at heart!

I wonder if anyone can help me out or give me a bit of advice. My good lady and I have recently come into a bit of money and rather than doing anything sensible with it we are going to squander it on travelling round the world (setting out from London UK). My initial plan was to visit a few places we'd always wanted to go (LA, South Africa, New Zealand, Mexico) and supplement our income by working in places along the way (eg, Australia, NZ, Canada). Now I'd assumed that as these were all Commonwealth countries (i think) we would be able to get short term working visas pretty easily. Unfortunately, on checking it seems you can only get a working visa if you're under 30. And I'm 31!

So I have two questions I suppose - firstly, can any subscribers in the aforementioned countries comment on how strictly these rules are stuck to? For instance, how possible/impossible would it be to get bar work, etc in NZ without a visa? And can anyone recommend any other countries I've missed where work rules are less strict, or just nice places in general really... we're not looking to make our fortunes, just keep our funds high enough to keep us on the road.

Thanks in advance - NB, the email address is real, so if you've got any "off the record" tips...

I can't see no visa being a problem in NZ, if you can find a job to take.

I don't think there's any way you can work in the States "legally" if you're a UK citizen, is there? I'd always assumed Canada was different, but maybe I'm wrong...

no but if you work for a us company and get a transfer internally?

that might be the case but my current employers are well and truly British (although they do have an American parent company...)

there's an exhibition on at the business design centre in islington from feb 21 - 23 for independent world travellers. apparently there's a stand called 'work your way round the world' which might be worth visiting. see www.itwshow.com.

australia is pretty much the same as nz with visas, from what i recall. ie: keep quiet, work hard and no one cares.
not that i am suggesting you work minus a working visa :-)
